On an iPhone running iOS 17, the reliable way to disable screen recording is through Screen Time restrictions—not by removing the Screen Recording button from Control Center. Apple places this control under the Game Center restrictions list, even though it affects the iPhone’s general screen-recording function.
Disable screen recording on an iPhone running iOS 17
- Open Settings.
- Tap Screen Time.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- If the feature is off, turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions. If it is already on, continue to the next step.
- Tap App Store, Media, Web & Games.
- Scroll to the Game Center section.
- Tap Screen Recording.
- Select Don’t Allow.
The complete iOS 17 path is:
Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → App Store, Media, Web & Games → Game Center → Screen Recording → Don’t Allow
After this setting is applied, starting a recording from Control Center is blocked. The restriction applies to the iPhone’s screen-recording capability, not just to a particular app.

What happens when someone tries to record
With Screen Recording set to Don’t Allow, tapping the Screen Recording control in Control Center will not start a recording. This is different from merely hiding the control: the Screen Time restriction prevents the feature from being used.

To check the setting, swipe down from the top-right corner of the display to open Control Center and tap the Screen Recording button. If the restriction is active, recording will be blocked rather than proceeding normally.
How to allow screen recording again
Use the same menu path to reverse the restriction:
- Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Tap App Store, Media, Web & Games.
- Under Game Center, tap Screen Recording.
- Change the setting to Allow.
If the Screen Recording button is missing from Control Center after you select Allow, add it again through the Control Center customization settings. Hiding the button and disabling the feature are separate actions.
Why the setting is under Game Center
The location can seem unrelated because screen recording is not normally thought of as a gaming feature. Apple nevertheless groups it with Game Center restrictions. In the same list, iOS includes controls such as multiplayer games, adding friends, connecting with friends, and nearby multiplayer.

Do not use iTunes & App Store Purchases for this task. That is a different restrictions menu. The relevant intermediate menu in iOS 17 is App Store, Media, Web & Games.
If Screen Time asks for a passcode
Changing this restriction may require the Screen Time passcode. Enter it when prompted. The passcode is separate from the iPhone unlock passcode unless the same code was deliberately chosen.
For a child’s iPhone managed with Family Sharing, the parent or guardian may need to approve the change. Depending on how the family account is configured, the restriction may need to be changed from the parent or guardian’s device rather than directly on the child’s iPhone.

Do not confuse these three screen features

Removing the Control Center button is not enough
A common workaround is to open Settings → Control Center and remove Screen Recording. That only removes the shortcut from Control Center. It does not disable the underlying recording capability; someone could potentially restore the control or use another available route to access it.

- The Screen Recording control is missing: Add it back to Control Center.
- Screen mirroring is active: Stop mirroring first. iPhone does not record and mirror the display simultaneously.
- The app blocks capture: Some apps do not allow video or audio recording. Test with the Home Screen or another app to determine whether the problem is app-specific.
- A family or device-management policy is overriding the setting: A parent, guardian, school, or organization may control the restriction and prevent local changes.
- The wrong restriction menu was changed: Confirm that the setting is under Game Center → Screen Recording, not under purchase restrictions.
iOS version note
This procedure is written for iOS 17. Apple’s newer User Guide may use a different overall layout or wording in surrounding menus, but Apple continues to document Screen Recording within the Game Center restrictions. If the labels on a newer iPhone differ slightly, look for the Screen Time content and privacy controls rather than relying on the Control Center shortcut alone.

Can I disable iPhone screen recording without Screen Time?
Not with Apple’s documented device-wide control. Removing Screen Recording from Control Center only hides the shortcut. To block the feature, use Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → App Store, Media, Web & Games → Game Center → Screen Recording, then choose Don’t Allow.

Why is Screen Recording listed under Game Center?
Apple groups Screen Recording with Game Center restrictions, alongside options such as multiplayer games and adding friends. Although the category is unexpected, this is the setting that controls the iPhone’s general screen-recording capability.
Will disabling screen recording stop screen mirroring?
No. Screen mirroring and screen recording are separate features. The iPhone cannot record its screen while it is actively mirroring, but disabling Screen Recording does not itself disable screen mirroring.
Why can one app still prevent recording after I choose Allow?
Some apps independently block video or audio capture. If recording works on the Home Screen but not inside a particular app, the app is likely enforcing its own capture restriction rather than Screen Time blocking recording.
Can a child change this restriction?
A Screen Time passcode may be required. When the iPhone is managed through Family Sharing, the parent or guardian may need to authorize or change the setting from the parent or guardian’s device.
