If you only want to stop sound coming from your monitor, change your computer’s audio output and check the monitor’s mute and volume controls; you do not need to open it. Physically removing built-in speakers is a model-specific repair, not a universal monitor procedure. First decide which meaning of “remove” fits your goal.

Choose between turning monitor audio off and removing hardware

Changing the audio output is quick and reversible. It tells the computer where to play sound, while leaving the monitor’s internal speakers in place. Physical removal involves opening the device and following its exact service procedure; the steps can differ substantially between models.

Approach Best for What to expect
Change the computer’s output device Stopping monitor sound or routing audio elsewhere A reversible settings change; menu names vary by Windows version.
Use the monitor’s on-screen controls Muting or lowering the monitor’s own audio Available controls depend on the monitor model.
Physically remove internal speakers A repair or hardware change when settings are not the goal Requires a service procedure for the exact device and may involve significant disassembly.

How to stop sound from coming through the monitor

Change the playback output in Windows

  1. Open the taskbar sound control and select the output device you want to use, such as your headphones or another set of speakers. Alternatively, open Settings > System > Sound and select the preferred output device.
  2. Play audio and confirm that it comes from the selected device.

Microsoft documents selecting an audio output device in Windows in its Windows sound troubleshooting guide. The exact controls can vary by Windows version. If the monitor remains audible, check that Windows is using the intended output and inspect the monitor’s own volume and mute settings.

Check the monitor’s mute and volume controls

Use the monitor’s physical buttons or on-screen display to check its volume and mute status. Menu layouts differ by model. LG Support likewise advises checking monitor volume and mute controls, as well as the selected Windows output, in its monitor no-sound guidance.

Does the cable carry audio?

The connection can explain why monitor speakers appear as an audio destination—or why they produce no sound. MSI states that HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C with DP Alt Mode can carry audio; VGA and DVI do not. With VGA or DVI, a monitor that supports speakers needs a separate audio connection for sound.

Check the port labels before connecting anything: an audio-in port receives sound, while a headphone or line-out jack sends sound out. They are not interchangeable. MSI explains these connection and port distinctions in its monitor audio troubleshooting guide.

If you mean physically removing the speakers

Do not follow a generic monitor teardown. Find the exact make and model printed on the device or in its system information, then locate the manufacturer’s service manual for that model. If the manufacturer does not provide a relevant procedure, or you are unsure about any step, use a qualified repairer rather than guessing.

Why the exact model matters

Service documentation shows how different—and extensive—speaker access can be. For example, Dell’s OptiPlex 7780 All-In-One service manual requires removal of several components before speaker access. For that specific all-in-one, the procedure then describes disconnecting the speaker cable, removing nine specified screws, releasing the cable from its routing guides, and lifting out the speakers with their cable. Those instructions are not for a standalone monitor.

Microsoft’s Surface Pro 9 component disassembly and reassembly guide covers a tablet, not a standalone monitor. It requires powering off and disconnecting the power supply before service work and names a 3IP Torx-plus driver for the specified speaker screws. HP’s Computer Maintenance and Service Guide gives separate speaker-removal instructions for the computer models it covers, including disconnecting power and other external devices and removing specified parts. These examples illustrate why another device’s procedure or tool list cannot safely be treated as a monitor instruction.

Before opening the device

  • Confirm that the service document matches the exact model and product type.
  • Follow its stated shutdown, power-disconnection, and disassembly prerequisites.
  • Use only the tools specified for that procedure; do not assume a general electronics kit has the right bit.
  • Consider that opening the device can damage it or affect warranty or service options. Check the manufacturer’s terms for your model rather than assuming a universal outcome.
