To turn off subtitles on DISH, open Closed Captioning on the receiver and disable it. On Hopper, Wally, and Joey receivers, use the remote’s red button or press Options twice to reach the setting; if that shortcut is unavailable, open Menu once or Home twice, then select Settings and Closed Captioning. DISH calls subtitles “Closed Captioning” in its menus.
Turn off captions on a Hopper, Wally, or Joey
DISH’s quick route depends on which remote you have. If the shortcut does not appear on your remote, use the Settings path instead.

Select Closed Captioning.

Choose the setting that turns captioning off.
For the Settings route, press Menu once or Home twice, select Settings, then Closed Captioning. DISH describes the feature as on-screen text of a program’s audio when enabled. DISH receiver closed-captioning instructions.

Use the legacy ViP receiver menu
Older ViP receivers use a different menu sequence:

Press Menu.

Select Preferences, then Closed Caption.

Choose Caption On/Off, select the desired preference, and choose Done.

Switch off captions in DISH Anywhere
If text appears only during DISH Anywhere playback, use the app’s playback controls rather than changing receiver settings:

On TV: Reveal the playback options with the remote, highlight CC, and select it.
DISH says captions can remain on when you change channels or watch recorded content in the app, so switch them off in playback if they continue to appear. DISH Anywhere closed-captioning instructions.

Some DISH remotes offer a shortcut, but the button is not universal. The Wally and Hopper remote guides describe pressing and holding the Diamond button to toggle closed captioning. On the 54 Series remote, customizable buttons can be assigned to toggle captioning. Use these only if your remote supports the function; otherwise, use the receiver menu.
