To stop Linux from suspending or locking automatically, change the setting for the specific behavior in your desktop’s power or screen-lock controls. Screen blanking, session locking, idle suspend, and closing a laptop lid are separate events, so changing one may not change the others. The steps below cover GNOME and KDE Plasma 6, then explain when to investigate systemd-logind.
Identify what is happening before changing settings
First note your desktop environment, its version, and whether the computer is on AC power or battery. Reproduce the behavior and distinguish among these four possibilities:
- Display blanking: The screen turns off or goes dark. The computer may still be awake, and the session may remain unlocked.
- Screen locking: The session requires authentication to resume. This is configured separately from display blanking.
- Automatic suspend: The computer enters a low-power sleep state after inactivity.
- Lid or hardware-key action: The computer responds to an event, such as closing a laptop lid, rather than an idle timer.
GNOME Help and the KDE Plasma 6 handbook document these as separate controls: GNOME screen blanking and KDE Power Management.
How do I stop Linux from suspending when idle?
GNOME
- Open Activities, search for Power, and open the Power panel.
- Find the inactivity action under the power-saving settings and set it to Nothing (the setting’s action value is
nothing) for each power source where you want to prevent idle suspend. - Check both AC and battery settings if the change should apply in both states.
GNOME documents separate inactivity timeout and action settings for AC and battery. For exact labels and policy details, see the GNOME System Administration Guide: Power.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
KDE Plasma 6
- Open System Settings → Power Management.
- Under Suspend Session, set the inactivity action to Do nothing.
This follows the stable KF6 handbook. Labels or layout may differ by Plasma release or distribution; if needed, search System Settings for “Power Management.”
How do I stop my screen from locking automatically?
Change the screen-locking control, not just the suspend or display setting. In KDE Plasma 6, open System Settings → Screen Locking and adjust its automatic-lock behavior. The lock module has its own inactivity behavior, separate from the Power Management suspend action and the display shutoff control.

In GNOME, use the screen-lock settings for the installed GNOME release. Disabling Screen Blank in the Power panel only prevents the display from blanking; it does not by itself disable automatic locking. See GNOME Help: Set screen blanking time for the distinction and blanking control.
How do I keep my laptop awake when the lid is closed?
Lid closing is a hardware event, so changing an idle timeout may not affect it. First check your desktop environment’s power controls for a lid-close action. Desktop environments commonly hold low-level inhibitor locks for lid and power-key handling; when a relevant lock is held, logind’s corresponding Handle* setting does not control that event.

For systemd-logind, HandleLidSwitch= concerns lid events, and the cited manual lists suspend as its default. Exact defaults can vary by systemd version and local configuration. System-wide changes may require administrator privileges and affect all users. Consult the systemd-logind configuration manual and systemd inhibitor documentation; use the desktop’s own controls first.
When should I check systemd-logind?
Check logind only if the desktop settings do not explain the behavior. Its IdleAction= controls a system-idle action and defaults to ignore in the cited manual. For that action to occur, all sessions must report idle, no idle inhibitor lock may be active, and the configured IdleActionSec= interval must elapse. If IdleAction= is already ignore, that particular logind mechanism is not causing automatic suspend.

Inhibitor locks can block or delay selected operations. They serve specific application needs; systemd warns that misusing idle-blocking locks can prevent mobile devices from suspending automatically and harm battery life. A temporary systemd-inhibit command is not a permanent replacement for changing the desktop’s idle preference. See the logind configuration manual and inhibitor documentation.

Check the change under the conditions that caused the problem
- Confirm the desktop environment and release; settings and labels are not universal across Linux desktops.
- Check AC and battery separately if the behavior occurs on both.
- Verify whether the result was display-off, a locked session, or actual suspend.
- If the behavior follows lid closure, test and adjust the lid action separately.
- On a managed GNOME machine, an administrator may have locked dconf settings. GNOME’s documented system-wide policy uses
/etc/dconf/profile/userand/etc/dconf/db/<database>.d/; administrators update the database withdconf update, and users must log out and back in for system-wide settings to take effect. See the GNOME dconf system policy guide. - If you changed logind configuration, check the installed systemd version and whether the desktop holds an inhibitor lock for the relevant action.
