To get a website working when it says an ad blocker is active, turn off the specific blocking feature responsible, and start with the narrowest change. In Firefox, that can be either an installed content-blocking extension or the browser’s built-in Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP). Check both before changing anything, because they are controlled in different places.
Work out which blocker is involved
A message such as “ad blocker detected” does not prove that you have a dedicated ad-blocking extension installed. Sites often use the same wording when Firefox’s own protections block a resource the page needs. Firefox calls its built-in feature Enhanced Tracking Protection. Mozilla describes it as blocking known trackers, and blocked resources can sometimes stop site images, video, login controls, or payment forms from working.
Use these two checks to decide where to start:
- Shield icon: Look for the shield beside the address bar. If it is present for the current site, ETP is a possible cause.
- Extensions panel: Click the puzzle-piece Extensions button. Any installed content blocker will be listed there.
Option 1: Turn off ETP for a single site
This is the narrowest test and the right first step when the shield is active on the broken page. The change applies only to that site, so the rest of your browsing keeps its protection.
- Open the site that is misbehaving.
- Click the shield icon beside the address bar.
- Turn ETP off for this site.
- Reload the page and check whether the content or controls now work.
Treat this as a temporary troubleshooting choice. If the site works, you can leave the exception in place only as long as you need it, then turn protection back on for that site.

Option 2: Disable a content-blocking extension
If the shield is not the cause, or the site still reports blocking after you turn off ETP, the blocker is probably an extension. Firefox’s extension manager can switch it off without removing it. Mozilla’s extension-management help article, last updated 27 August 2026, describes this manager as the place to view, enable, disable, remove, and manage installed extensions.
- Click the Extensions button (the puzzle-piece icon) in the Firefox toolbar.
- Choose Manage extensions.
- In Add-ons Manager, find the suspected blocker.
- Click its blue toggle to switch it off. Mozilla’s help text says to “click the blue toggle for the extension you wish to disable.”
- Reload the site.
Check the extension’s own settings before you disable it entirely. Many blockers offer a per-site allowlist or pause button, and the menu for these differs between extensions. Use that control first when it exists, since it keeps the blocker active elsewhere. Disabling the extension in Add-ons Manager is the Firefox-level option when no such control is available.

If the site still does not work
Mozilla’s ETP exceptions article, last updated 25 June 2026, documents compatibility exceptions that can keep most protection in place while allowing resources a particular site needs. If the page still fails after the steps above, work through these in order:
- Reload the page once more after any change.
- Open the same site in another browser to confirm whether the problem is the site or your Firefox setup.
- Clear that site’s cookies and cache, then reload.
- Report the problem to Mozilla if the site still fails.
Turn protection back on
Once the site works, restore whatever you changed. Turn ETP back on for the site from the shield icon, and re-enable any extension you disabled from Manage extensions by clicking its blue toggle again. Restoring protection matters because the exception was only needed to make the page function, and leaving every blocker off weakens privacy on every other site you visit.

What the sources do and do not establish
Mozilla’s current support pages document the Extensions panel, Manage extensions, the blue toggle, ETP’s per-site control, and ETP exceptions. They do not give universal menu paths for third-party blockers, because those interfaces vary by developer. Older user forum posts that describe turning off an ad blocker reflect earlier wording and should not be treated as current interface instructions. The steps above were written from Mozilla’s documentation and were not tested on every Firefox version or operating system.
