You can disable 802.11b only if your router offers a 2.4 GHz mode or rate setting that excludes it—and only older devices that support another enabled mode will stay connected. Check the router’s model-specific settings, make the change reversible, and test the devices you need to keep online.

What disabling 802.11b changes

802.11b is a legacy Wi-Fi standard for the 2.4 GHz band. A router may include its rates in a mixed mode or let you remove them through a mode or rate control. MikroTik lists 802.11b rates as 1, 2, 5.5, and 11 Mbps; these are supported-rate values, not a promise of real-world throughput. Its RouterOS documentation distinguishes b/g/n mode, which includes b rates, from g/n mode, which does not: MikroTik RouterOS wireless interface documentation.

Disabling b does not mean every older device will disconnect. A device that also supports an enabled mode may continue to connect; one that requires 802.11b may not. Compatibility depends on both the router’s actual settings and the client’s capabilities.

Check whether your older devices can still connect

Before changing the router, identify which devices must remain connected and check their specifications or support documentation for supported Wi-Fi standards. Pay particular attention to devices that connect only over 2.4 GHz; removing b rates or choosing a mode that excludes b can prevent a b-only client from joining.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • Record the router’s current wireless settings so you can restore them.
  • Check the model and firmware of the router and consult its manual or support page for the exact meaning of each mode and rate option.
  • Confirm that each essential older device supports at least one mode the router will continue to allow.

If a computer’s Wi-Fi adapter is limited to legacy standards such as 802.11b, replacing or supplementing that adapter may be an option. Linksys discusses a Wireless-N adapter as a possible upgrade in its EA2750 user guide. Check the computer’s operating-system, driver, and hardware compatibility before choosing an adapter; this is not a solution for every older device.

Find the 2.4 GHz mode or rate control

Sign in to the router’s administration interface and open the wireless settings for the 2.4 GHz band. Look for labels such as Wireless Mode, 802.11 Mode, legacy rates, basic rates, or minimum data rate. Exact labels and menus vary by model and firmware, so there is no universal click path.

For example, D-Link documents a Settings > Wi-Fi route for changing the 802.11 mode on certain routers: D-Link’s mode-change instructions. A D-Link M60 manual lists a 2.4 GHz “Mixed 802.11g/n” option alongside modes that include b: D-Link M60 manual, Section 3 – Configuration. These are examples, not instructions for other router models.

Choose an option that excludes b, then test

  1. Select the 2.4 GHz radio. Do not change the 5 GHz band unless you intend to adjust that band too.
  2. Choose a mode that explicitly excludes 802.11b, such as g/n or n-only if your router offers it. If the router provides an explicit rate control, use its documentation to confirm which b rates the setting removes. Mode names and effects are not identical across manufacturers.
  3. Save or apply the change. Keep the router’s previous setting available so you can restore it if needed.
  4. Test the older devices that need to stay connected. Confirm that each can join the network and perform the tasks for which you rely on it.
  5. Restore the previous setting if an essential device fails. Leave b enabled on the shared network until you have a compatible alternative or a router-supported arrangement that meets your needs.

A separate network for legacy devices is only an option if your router supports it and you can configure it appropriately. Check the model’s manual rather than assuming the feature exists.

Understand the trade-offs and avoid changing the wrong setting

A mode choice can exclude b while also changing the broader set of allowed 2.4 GHz modes. An explicit basic- or minimum-rate control may target legacy rates more narrowly, but the router’s documentation determines what it actually does. Compare the options by which clients they support and whether they change more than b rates.

Apple’s general guidance favors compatibility: “It’s usually best to enable every mode that’s offered by your router, rather than a subset of these modes.” See Apple’s recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points. Disabling b is a deliberate exception to that general advice, so test the clients you need before treating the change as permanent.

Do not confuse 802.11b with Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax). A Wi-Fi 6 setting controls a different feature; disabling it is not the way to remove 802.11b rates. NETGEAR notes that turning off Wi-Fi 6 features may reduce performance for newer devices, and that menu navigation differs among router models: NETGEAR Wi-Fi 6 settings guidance.
