Yes, a DSLR can make usable digital copies of old prints. Shoot straight down from a rigid, parallel mount, frame the entire print, and handle the original so that nothing is bent, pressed, or forced. The Library of Congress documents DSLR capture within its digital imaging workflow, and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) describes overhead camera copying of photographs. Neither publishes a home recipe for exposure, lens choice, lighting, or color. Treat any specific settings you find elsewhere as starting points to verify on your own equipment, not as institutional requirements.

What the preservation guidance supports

The Library of Congress lists DSLR image capture as one element of its digital imaging workflow, alongside normal illumination, metadata, and post-capture processing. NARA’s holdings guidance describes overhead camera digitization of photographs, including capture through a polyester sleeve. An overhead camera setup is therefore an established method for photographs, not a workaround.

What these sources do not provide is a home-use settings chart. There is no published aperture, shutter speed, ISO, or color-target procedure for prints. The advice below covers the parts that are established: positioning, framing, handling, resolution logic, and storage.

Equipment checklist

  • A DSLR with a lens that focuses close enough to fill the frame with the full print, plus some margin on every side.
  • A camera copy stand or rigid overhead mount that holds the camera steady and keeps its sensor parallel to the print. Check that the stand’s column height and base size suit your camera body and the largest print you plan to copy before buying. Mentioning a copy stand here is not an endorsement of any model.
  • A clean, roomy table away from food and drink.
  • Even, normal illumination that does not create hot spots or shadows across the print. The Library of Congress workflow describes capture under normal illumination; it does not specify a lighting arrangement for home use.
  • A polyester sleeve, only if the print already sits in one. NARA’s holdings guidance describes capture through a sleeve.
  • Book supports, a wedge, or a cradle, only if you are copying pages from an album or bound volume.
  • Storage media for the finished files, such as a USB drive and an external hard drive. The Library of Congress uses these as examples; they are not product recommendations.

Capture workflow

Step 1: Decide what the files are for

Before you shoot, decide whether the files are for sharing on screen, printing, or long-term preservation. The Library of Congress says digitization planning should consider purpose, intended users, effects on the original, presentation, access, and storage. Resolution is one input, not the whole plan. The file you need for a family group chat is different from the one you need for an enlargement on a wall.

  • Optical Viewfinder with approx 95% viewing coverage
  • Use the EOS Utility Webcam Beta Software (Mac and Windows) to turn your compatible Canon camera into a high-quality webcam. Compatible Lenses- Canon EF Lenses (including EF-S lenses, excluding EF-M lenses)

Step 2: Prepare the surface and the print

Clear the table and keep food and drink well away. Lift prints by their edges and keep them supported across their full area. Do not stack anything on top of the print, and do not press it flat to improve the image; the flattening risk is covered under handling cautions below.

Step 3: Mount the camera overhead

Fix the camera to the copy stand so that the lens axis is perpendicular to the print and the sensor plane is parallel to it. Tilt is the most common cause of distorted rectangles and uneven focus across a print. Frame the complete image with a small margin of table or border visible, so you can confirm the whole print was captured. If the print is in a polyester sleeve, shoot through the sleeve and watch for reflections of the lights or the camera in the plastic.

Step 4: Shoot at full native resolution

Set the camera to its largest native image size. Cropping tightly after capture does not add detail, and interpolation, which is software enlargement, does not add real information either. NARA’s agency transfer benchmark does not permit interpolating from lower resolution. Choose the size you need by working through the pixel guidance in the next section.

Step 5: Check before you move on

Review each frame at 100 percent on the camera or computer. Confirm that focus is sharp across the image (edges and fine detail are the best test), that all four corners are inside the frame, and that no shadow or glare falls across the picture area. Reshoot immediately if a frame fails; retaking one print is far cheaper than discovering a soft collection later.

How many pixels you need

The most specific pixel figures in the guidance are NARA’s legacy examples. The agency’s digital-camera transfer specification, effective January 1, 2005, requires camera-created records to be at least 6 megapixels with a minimum array of 3,000 by 2,000 pixels. That is an institutional transfer requirement for agency records, not a personal-use minimum. NARA’s legacy scanned-photo examples show how pixel dimensions follow from the physical size of the original and the resolution used to scan it:

Source and original Setting stated by NARA Resulting pixel dimensions Scope
8 by 10 inch photograph 300 dpi 2,400 by 3,000 pixels Legacy scanned-photo transfer example
35 mm original 2,100 dpi 2,000 by 3,000 pixels Legacy scanned-photo transfer example, film original
Camera-created record Not applicable (minimum array, not a scan setting) At least 3,000 by 2,000 pixels and at least 6 megapixels NARA agency transfer specification effective January 1, 2005

For your own prints, the useful figure is capture density: divide the pixel count across the print by the print’s width in inches. For example, a 4 by 6 inch print captured so that its 6-inch side spans 3,000 pixels has about 500 pixels per inch of print. Whether that is enough depends on how large you intend to print or display the result, and on how much detail the original actually holds. The figure describes what your file can carry; it is not a universal DPI requirement, and the guidance does not assign one to home DSLR captures.

Handling and preservation cautions

  • Do not flatten prints under glass. The Library of Congress specifically cautions against placing glass or Plexiglas on collection material to hold it flat, because the weight and pressure can damage it.
  • Do not force bound material open. For albums and books, use a book support, wedge, or cradle so the binding opens without strain, and do not risk a spine for a single picture.
  • Limit light exposure for valuable originals. The Library of Congress states that photographs exposed to light undergo irreversible damage over time, even behind UV-filtering glass. For photographs of personal, monetary, or historic value, it suggests displaying a facsimile and storing the original appropriately.

Overhead camera or flatbed scanner

A flatbed scanner is a common alternative for flat prints. The table compares the factors the guidance addresses. Where a value is not established, the table says so rather than offering an estimate.

Because the guidance offers no controlled speed or quality comparison, neither method can be declared faster or better in general. For a set of sturdy, flat prints that fit completely, either method can work. For fragile, curled, oversized, or valuable items, the handling column should decide the method. A professional digitization service is a category-level option for large or fragile collections; this article does not recommend a specific provider.

Storing originals and digital files

NARA’s guidance on digitizing family papers and photographs puts the central principle plainly: “Keep your originals after you digitize them, because digital files have their own preservation risks and can easily be lost.” A scan or photo is an access copy. It does not replace the print, and it carries its own risks.

The Library of Congress FAQ on digital copies adds two practical rules:

  • Keep saved copies on at least two different storage media, in separate physical locations.
  • Migrate saved copies to current storage media about every five years, so that files do not become unreadable as hardware changes.

Choose the physical locations deliberately. Two drives in the same drawer protect against a failed drive but not against a fire, flood, or theft at home.
