To reduce Windows boot time, first find out whether the delay is in firmware, Windows loading, the desktop’s startup work, or activity after the desktop appears. Measure the same startup path before and after each change; then fix the slow phase rather than disabling programs or buying hardware at random.
What counts as boot time?
For this guide, time-to-shell means the time until the desktop is visible. It is not the same as the time Windows takes to finish background startup work or become idle. Microsoft’s boot-duration metrics distinguish the visible-desktop endpoint from later activity and recommend examining subphases to locate likely delays. Their subphase durations do not necessarily add up to the overall metric.
A useful diagnosis separates three parts of the experience:
- Firmware and POST: the work before Windows starts, including hardware initialization.
- Windows to desktop: OS loading, device and driver initialization, and software that must run before the shell is available.
- After the desktop: startup tasks that continue after the desktop appears and may keep the PC busy.
A long wait after the desktop is visible can still make a PC feel slow, but it should not be reported as time-to-shell.

Choose a comparable startup path
Windows Fast Startup and a Full Boot are different startup paths, so compare like with like. A restart, a shutdown followed by power-on, and resuming from a saved state may not exercise the same work. Microsoft documents separate Windows Performance Recorder scenarios for boot and Fast Startup, and separate Fast Startup and Full Boot assessments in its startup and shutdown guidance.
Before measuring, note the machine and Windows build, the power-state transition, connected peripherals, and startup configuration. Keep these consistent between the baseline and follow-up. If both a full boot and Fast Startup matter to you, measure each as its own case rather than combining their results.

Capture a trace and locate the slow phase
For detailed diagnosis, use Windows Performance Recorder (WPR) to capture Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) data, then inspect the recording in Windows Performance Analyzer (WPA). WPR is included in the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit; Microsoft describes its recording and analysis workflow in the WPR documentation. Its built-in On/Off scenarios include boot and Fast Startup.

- Record a baseline: choose the WPR scenario that matches the startup path you want to improve and capture a trace.
- Inspect phase and resource data: use WPA to find whether the delay is before Windows, during OS-to-shell startup, or after the desktop. Look for processes and resource activity that coincide with the delay.
- Change one measured cause: make a single targeted change so you can tell whether it helped.
- Repeat the same scenario: capture another trace under comparable conditions and check both time-to-shell and any post-desktop measure relevant to your experience.
Windows Assessment Toolkit on/off assessments can also help interpret Fast Startup and Full Boot metrics and identify common issues. Repeat runs on the same machine and compare results; the cited Microsoft material does not establish one universal “good” boot time for all devices. See Results for the On/Off Assessments for metric definitions and interpretation.

Startup apps, services, and OEM preload
Identify non-inbox and third-party processes that run before the shell, then determine whether each needs to run at that point. If a process is not required for startup, delaying its work may reduce pressure on the boot path. Do not blindly disable security, device-management, or hardware utilities: first establish what the software does and whether the user or device depends on it.
Microsoft’s startup guidance identifies OEM preload as a source of boot delays and discusses services, startup apps, and antivirus activity as contributors to CPU and disk use. In that context, Microsoft’s 2021 guidance says Fast Startup represents about half of overall boot time; treat that as a statement tied to its discussion, not a universal estimate for every computer or current configuration. The same guidance says, “The main source of boot delays is the OEM software preload.” Read Microsoft’s startup and shutdown guidance for its scope and recommendations.

Drivers and device initialization
Driver work can delay startup when it sits on the critical path. Microsoft’s driver guidance says a driver should perform only the initialization needed to bring up a device during cold startup and defer other operations until startup is complete. It also describes parallel device initialization and overlapping disk I/O with device initialization as ways to reduce delay. These are principally design recommendations for driver and device makers, not a reason for users to modify drivers manually. See Improving System Startup Performance.
Firmware and POST
If the trace or observed delay points to the period before Windows begins loading, Windows startup-app changes are unlikely to address it. Microsoft’s guidance for PC makers calls out reducing POST time and optimizing UEFI read routing. For an end user, check firmware setup and available device-specific firmware updates cautiously, following the computer maker’s instructions; do not change unfamiliar settings solely to chase a faster boot.

Storage and other hardware
Microsoft identifies CPU performance, disk performance, and memory capacity as factors to balance. That supports investigating hardware when measurements point to a resource bottleneck, but it does not establish that an SSD upgrade will help every slow PC. Consider a compatible storage change only when storage activity is the measured constraint; verify interface, physical fit, and system support before purchasing. A slow total boot number alone is not enough evidence for a hardware upgrade.

After each change, repeat the original startup scenario and compare the same endpoint. If the desktop now appears sooner but background activity still delays the work you need to do, track that post-desktop activity separately. If the total does not improve, restore the prior setting when appropriate and return to the trace: the dominant delay may be in another phase, or the change may not have affected the critical path.
