To find out whether your TV has a built-in tuner, look up its exact model number and check the manufacturer’s specifications or owner manual for a digital broadcast tuner that matches your region. In the United States, the entry to look for is ATSC, the digital standard used for over-the-air channels. If the documentation confirms the tuner, a short antenna test will show whether it is working with your signal. If the set has no digital tuner, you will need a digital-to-analog converter box to watch antenna channels.
Quick answer: confirm the model first, then test the antenna
Brand and screen type do not tell you whether a television can receive digital broadcasts. Two models from the same manufacturer can differ: one may include an ATSC tuner while another needs an external box. The model number is what decides the answer, so start there.
Step 1: Read the model’s tuner listing
Find the model number on the rear label, or in the TV’s settings under an About or System Information screen. Then search the manufacturer’s support site for that exact model and open its manual or specification sheet. Look for one of the entries below.

Philips support pages show why this check matters. For one integrated HDTV, the page states: “This Integrated HDTV has the digital tuner built into the TV set. It does not need a separate set-top box to receive free Over-the-Air digital TV signals (ATSC).” That statement applies to the models on that page, not to every Philips television. For older listed models, the same support guidance says: “You will need to use a digital-to-analog converter box to receive digital channels.”

Step 2: Connect the antenna and run a digital scan
If the documentation confirms a digital tuner, test reception with these steps. Menu names vary by brand, model and software version, so use the labels in your manual where they differ.
- Turn off the TV, then connect your antenna’s coaxial cable to the port labeled CABLE/ANT. Make sure the connector is fully seated.
- Turn the TV on and open the input or source menu. Select Antenna TV. TCL’s Android TV instructions use this input name for the antenna connection.
- Open the channel setup menu and start an antenna scan. Where the menu offers a tuner mode, choose Antenna. Where it offers a channel type, choose Digital.
- Let the scan run to completion. Do not switch inputs or turn the TV off during the scan.
- Check the channel list. If digital channels appear, the built-in tuner is receiving signal from your antenna.
If you connect a cable box or satellite box by HDMI, do not run an antenna scan for that setup. TCL’s guidance is to select the HDMI input that the box uses. The box supplies its own signal path, so the antenna scan does not apply.

When the scan finds no channels
An empty scan does not prove that the tuner is missing. TCL’s support text explains the variables: “Channel availability depends on your location, antenna type, antenna placement, signal strength, and local broadcast coverage.” Work through these checks before deciding anything about the hardware.

A loose connector is a common cause of an empty scan.
- Amplifiers and splitters: If the antenna line passes through a splitter or amplifier, bypass it temporarily and connect the antenna directly to the TV.
- Antenna placement: Move an indoor antenna higher, or closer to a window that faces the broadcast towers. Small changes in position can change which channels arrive.
- Scan settings: Confirm that the scan uses the antenna source and digital channel type, then run the scan again.
- Local coverage: Check which stations serve your address and what antenna type they recommend. Some areas receive weaker signals than others.
If the tuner is present but the signal is weak, the fix is in the antenna or its placement. A stronger antenna cannot add a tuner that the set does not have, and a converter box cannot strengthen a poor antenna signal.

If the TV has no compatible digital tuner
When the model documentation confirms that the set cannot receive digital broadcasts, a digital-to-analog converter box is the usual remedy for antenna viewing. Before buying one, check three things:
- Outputs the converter provides: Match them to the TV’s available inputs. Many older sets accept composite or component video rather than HDMI, so the connection type decides which box you can use.
- Broadcast standard: The converter must decode the standard used in your country or region. The manufacturer examples reviewed here cover U.S. ATSC broadcasts.
- Remote and power: Confirm that the converter can be powered and controlled the way you plan to use it.
Limits of this check
The steps above describe U.S. over-the-air television and ATSC-capable sets. Broadcast standards, menu names and model lines differ in other countries, so use your own region’s standard and the manual for your exact model. The manufacturer statements quoted here apply to the models named on those pages. They are not a general rule for every television. No particular TV model was tested for this article.

A scan that finds channels confirms reception on that day, at that location, with that antenna. Channel lineups can change, so a later rescan may show a different list.
