A page can load quickly and still become frustratingly unresponsive minutes later. To catch that gap, measure real interaction responsiveness with INP and event timing, inspect main-thread and rendering delays with Long Tasks and Long Animation Frames where supported, and log visibility and lifecycle changes so backgrounding, freezing, and discard recovery are visible in telemetry.
Why a fast load can still feel janky
Load measurements describe the start of a visit, not everything that happens after it. A page may become sluggish when a user opens a menu, types into a field, scrolls, or returns to a backgrounded tab. The web.dev INP guide says Chrome usage data shows that 90% of a user’s time on a page is spent after it loads; the guide does not specify the year of that usage data. Read the web.dev INP guide.
For a useful diagnosis, distinguish three questions: did the user wait for visible feedback, was the main thread occupied, and which scripts appear to have contributed to a delayed rendering frame? No single browser signal answers all three.

Start with INP
Interaction to Next Paint (INP) assesses responsiveness across click, tap, and keyboard interactions during a page visit. It measures the time until the next paint—the browser’s first opportunity to show visible feedback—not the completion of every later network request, animation, or asynchronous UI effect. INP is a stable Core Web Vital, according to the web.dev guide last updated September 2, 2025. See how INP is defined.

Use INP to establish whether users encounter slow feedback. When investigating an individual interaction, event-timing entries can add detail to performance telemetry; the Performance API exposes them through the performance timeline. These measurements need to be collected and interpreted by your application or monitoring system rather than treated as a diagnosis by themselves. MDN’s overview of performance data.
Add Long Tasks to find main-thread blocks
A long task is UI-thread work lasting 50 milliseconds or longer. While such work runs, input handling can be delayed, and animation or scrolling can appear janky. Long-task entries can reveal intervals of blocked main-thread work, but they do not establish on their own which user interaction was affected.
The Long Tasks API has limited availability and is not Baseline, so do not assume every browser will report it. Check supported entry types and guard observer setup so unsupported types do not break application code. MDN: PerformanceLongTaskTiming.

Use Long Animation Frames for rendering clues
Long Animation Frames (LoAF) report delayed rendering updates that take more than 50 milliseconds and can include script attribution. That attribution is useful evidence when investigating a slow frame, but it is not proof that one listed script is the sole cause. LoAF records are not a frame-rate history and cannot explain every visible hitch. Check browser compatibility for the browsers and devices you need to cover before relying on this signal.
Long Tasks and LoAF answer related but different questions: Long Tasks highlight long main-thread work, while LoAF describes a delayed rendering frame and may expose script contributors. web.dev describes Long Animation Frames as a more useful direction for broader frame diagnosis than relying on Long Tasks alone; compatibility information can change, so check current support for your target browser mix. MDN: Long animation frame timing · web.dev: Custom metrics.
Collect entries without assuming every browser supports them
PerformanceObserver lets an application consume performance timeline entries as they are recorded. Available entry types vary: the timeline includes categories such as event, longtask, visibility-state, navigation, resource, and custom timing entries, but not every browser supports every type. Use PerformanceObserver.supportedEntryTypes to discover what the current environment exposes, and guard both observer construction and observation.

Confirm the observation options and entry types against the browsers you support; a supported type does not guarantee that every optional field or diagnostic detail is present. The Performance API supplies measurements, not dashboards, aggregation, retention, alerting, sampling, or privacy decisions. Those remain application and monitoring-system responsibilities. Record visibility and tab lifecycle separately
Interaction and frame data cannot tell you whether a tab became hidden, was frozen by the browser, or was discarded and later reloaded. Record visibility changes and supported lifecycle transitions as their own telemetry. When the page becomes hidden, save important state and attempt to flush buffered analytics; do not rely on unload as a guaranteed final opportunity. Chrome’s Page Lifecycle guide warns that unload is unreliable and can harm performance in some cases.
Chrome documents freeze and resume lifecycle events. On a page loaded after a discard, desktop Chrome also exposes document.wasDiscarded, which can help distinguish a discard recovery from an ordinary load. Treat these as Chrome-specific examples and check behavior in the browsers and operating systems you target. Chrome’s guidance puts the goal plainly: “The Page Lifecycle API provides the predictability developers need to build apps resilient to system interventions.” Chrome for Developers: Page Lifecycle API.

The visibility handler is broadly useful as a point to attempt state preservation and telemetry delivery, but delivery is not guaranteed when a page is backgrounded or terminated. Test the actual lifecycle behavior in each browser environment that matters to your users.

Chrome’s chrome://discards page lets you exercise tab lifecycle failure modes. Use a controlled test session and verify the application’s behavior rather than inferring it from a single performance entry.

- Open the page you want to test in Chrome and make a recognizable change that should survive recovery, such as editing a draft.
- Open
chrome://discardsin another tab and locate the page under test. - Freeze the tab, then return to it and check whether the application resumes without stuck controls, duplicate work, or lost state.
- Discard the tab, then select it again so Chrome reloads it. Check whether the page detects the discard where supported and restores saved state correctly.
- Review telemetry for the visibility transition, supported freeze or resume events, and reload-after-discard signal. Keep those lifecycle records distinct from INP and rendering diagnostics.
These checks are Chrome-specific. They help validate recovery paths, but they do not reproduce every operating-system or browser intervention. Chrome’s lifecycle guide.

Choose monitoring coverage by the evidence you need
For in-house instrumentation or when assessing a hosted real-user monitoring system, compare capabilities against your debugging questions rather than relying on a single headline metric. Browser APIs establish which signals can exist, but they do not establish any particular vendor’s current features, retention, price, or coverage.
- Interaction coverage: Does it collect INP and useful event-level detail across the visit?
- Main-thread and frame diagnostics: Does it capture Long Tasks, Long Animation Frames, or both, and how does it handle browsers that lack support?
- Attribution: Can you inspect script contributors and understand what is unavailable for cross-origin frames?
- Browser and device coverage: Which browser versions, operating systems, and device classes contribute data?
- Data handling: What sampling, retention, and privacy controls are available, and what work is required to configure them?
- Operational context: Can you correlate a slow interaction or frame with application errors and release changes?
- Overhead: What collection cost does the instrumentation add to the page and its network activity?
A strong monitoring setup combines user-visible responsiveness, diagnostic clues about occupied main-thread time and delayed frames, and lifecycle context. Use support checks and controlled tests to interpret missing signals: no recorded long task or frame entry does not prove that a user saw no jank.
