A TCS3200/TCS230 detects color by measuring light through red, green, blue, and clear filter channels and turning each measurement into a pulse frequency. With Arduino, read each channel in turn and compare the resulting readings with reference samples collected under the same lighting and setup. The sensor does not identify colors independently of illumination.
How the TCS3200/TCS230 detects color
The TCS3200 is a programmable light-to-frequency converter. Its 8×8 photodiode array includes red-, green-, blue-, and clear-filtered photodiodes. The selected filter determines which part of the incoming light the circuit measures; an internal converter turns that response into a digital square-wave output. The output has a 50% duty cycle, and its frequency is proportional to incident light intensity (irradiance), according to the ams OSRAM TCS3200 product description.
Consequently, a red-channel reading is a measurement of the sensor’s response to light reaching its red-filtered photodiodes, not a universal code meaning “red.” The reading also reflects the light source, the object’s reflectance, optics between the object and sensor, and the sensor’s own spectral response. The ams OSRAM TCS230 application note AN000518 also notes sensitivity to infrared above 700 nm. Different lamps or optical arrangements can therefore produce different readings from the same nominal object color.

A basic setup uses a TCS3200 module, an Arduino or another controller capable of measuring pulse frequency, and connecting wires. Documented teaching modules are not all identical: SunFounder describes a TCS3200 module with four white LEDs, and DFRobot’s SEN0101 documentation also describes four white LEDs. Check the documentation and labels for your particular board rather than assuming a universal pinout, illumination arrangement, or voltage requirement.

The chip’s published supply range is 2.7–5.5 V, with 5.0 V typical; its published operating ambient range is −40 °C to 70 °C. These are chip-level specifications, not a guarantee that every breakout board accepts the same supply or has compatible logic levels. Consult the module documentation and your controller’s requirements before wiring.
Read the sensor channels with Arduino
The general measurement sequence is to select a filter, measure the frequency of the sensor’s output for a consistent interval, and repeat for the other filters. Arduino code must use the channel-selection pins and output pin defined by the specific module. Because modules and controller timing differ, there is no single reliable universal pin map or measurement threshold.

It includes white balance calibration and software filtering options to enhance accuracy, ensuring consistent results in diverse application scenarios.
- Identify the board connections. Use the module’s datasheet or pin labels to identify its power, ground, output, and filter-selection connections. Verify voltage and logic compatibility for both board and controller.
- Select a filter channel. Set the module’s selection inputs for red, green, blue, or clear using the truth table for that board. Allow the output to settle after changing channels if required by the module documentation.
- Measure output frequency consistently. Count output pulses over a fixed interval or measure pulse timing, using a method appropriate to the controller. Keep the measurement interval and method the same for every channel and every sample.
- Repeat for the other channels. Record red, green, and blue readings; the clear channel can provide an overall-light reference when useful. Keep the units and measurement conditions consistent.
- Classify against reference samples. First collect readings for known objects in the actual setup. Choose comparison ranges or a classification method from those samples; do not assume example thresholds will transfer to a different module, lamp, distance, or controller.
Calibrate for the actual lighting and geometry
For useful comparisons, hold the target distance, angle, background, enclosure, and illumination steady. If the setup changes, collect new reference samples. A clear-channel reading may help reveal an overall change in light, but it cannot by itself remove the effects of a different illuminant spectrum or object reflectance.
- Lighting: Lamps with different spectral output can shift channel readings even when brightness appears similar.
- Target: Surface color, finish, texture, and reflectance affect the light returned to the sensor.
- Optics and placement: A lens, cover, diffuser, distance, angle, or surrounding light can change the measured response.
- Infrared: The TCS230 response includes sensitivity above 700 nm, so sources with different infrared output may affect readings.
These dependencies are why a sensor reading is best treated as a description of the present optical setup. The manufacturer material does not establish a universal accuracy, detection distance, color range, or calibration threshold for every module.

Choosing a module or replacement
The ams OSRAM product page labels the TCS3200 chip “Discontinued.” That lifecycle status does not establish that all assembled modules are unavailable. Before buying a module, verify the actual sensor fitted, board pin labels and documentation, supply and logic requirements, and whether illumination is included. Treat accuracy claims as unverified unless the seller states the test conditions.
When comparing a TCS3200 board with another sensor, check the interface, supply and logic compatibility, included illumination or diffuser, optical field and working distance, calibration demands, and whether the device exposes filtered frequency channels or processed digital color values. The TCS3200’s frequency output and the optical dependencies described above make those practical points more informative than an unsupported headline accuracy figure.
