Homedale is a free, portable Wi-Fi monitor for Windows and macOS that scans nearby access points and displays details such as network name, signal strength, security, and channel. Use its table, signal graph, and logs to investigate coverage or congestion; they show what your wireless adapter can detect, not whether a connection will deliver a particular internet speed.

Download the Windows ZIP or macOS DMG from The SZ Development’s Homedale page. Homedale is free to download and use, according to the official FAQ.

Launch the application. Homedale is packaged to run without a conventional installation; a Windows review notes it can also run from removable storage.

Read the access-point table. Depending on the operating system, adapter, and driver, it can show SSID, BSSID (the access point’s MAC address), vendor information, signal strength, encryption, channel, frequency, supported rates, and other information elements.

Each row represents an access point the adapter can detect at its current location. A network may appear more than once if it has multiple access points or radios, so compare BSSID and channel as well as SSID. A stronger signal is useful evidence about radio coverage where the computer is sitting; it does not by itself establish internet speed, network capacity, or a better experience.
Monitor signal strength over time

Select the access point you want to investigate and open its signal graph.

Keep the computer in the location where the problem occurs, or move it gradually through the area you want to assess. Watch whether the signal remains stable, fluctuates, or drops as you move.

Use Homedale’s text logging or screenshot option to preserve observations. For an intermittent problem, log during the period when it usually happens rather than relying on a brief snapshot.

After changing router placement or configuration, repeat the observation from the same computer position and over a comparable time window. That makes a before-and-after comparison more meaningful.
Signal graphs describe the received wireless signal, not throughput. To determine whether a change improved actual performance, separately test the connection you care about under comparable conditions.
Use channel information to investigate congestion
Compare nearby access points by band or frequency, channel, signal level, and stability over the same observation period. On 2.4 GHz, overlapping neighboring networks can be a useful clue when diagnosing interference. On 5 GHz, inspect the channels visible to your adapter. Homedale’s channel-usage visualization can help you see which channels nearby access points occupy.

Router capabilities, local conditions, and the devices connecting to it also matter. If you test a different channel or router position, record the original conditions and compare again from the same place.

If Homedale shows no access points on Windows
On newer Windows versions, the operating system may withhold the access-point list unless Homedale has permission to access precise location. The SZ Development FAQ explains that this permission is required because of Windows API behavior; it also says Homedale does not use the location information.

Open Settings in Windows.

Go to Privacy & security > Location.

Allow location access for Homedale, then return to the application and check the access-point list again.
If the list remains empty, check that the computer’s Wi-Fi adapter is enabled and that the networks are within radio range. Homedale can report only what the operating system and adapter expose; available fields and behavior can vary with the wireless chipset and driver.
Use filters and logs for repeatable monitoring
Homedale documents command-line options for setting refresh intervals, filtering by SSID or BSSID, logging observations to text, appending to an existing log, and loading or saving CSV data. Other options can select the connected access point, start the application minimized or in the system tray, set a timed exit, or perform connection and disconnection actions.

Filters can match channel text, require all words, exclude terms with a minus sign, or select an SSID column. These controls can help narrow a busy list or capture evidence while troubleshooting an intermittent issue. Consult the application’s documentation for exact command syntax, which is not reproduced here.
Platform coverage and limits
The macOS product description covers 802.11a/b/g/n/ac networks in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, with 20, 40, 80, and 160 MHz channel widths. It also lists channel-usage visualization, signal graphs, logging, and connection controls. This describes the stated macOS coverage; actual visibility and fields depend on the computer’s wireless hardware, operating system, and driver.

It reports network and radio information exposed by the adapter and operating system. It does not decode protected Wi-Fi traffic.

Its signal and channel views support diagnosis, but they are not throughput benchmarks and cannot guarantee that a configuration change will improve performance.
