To remove an uploaded photo, delete its saved copy in ChatGPT’s Library if it appears there. Delete the conversation separately if you also want it gone from chat history: deleting a chat does not delete a photo saved in Library. OpenAI says deleted chats and files are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to exceptions.
Delete a photo saved in ChatGPT Library
- Open Library. In ChatGPT, select Library in the sidebar. Browse or search for the image; Library can filter files by type and whether they were uploaded or generated.
- Select the photo and choose Delete. Depending on the available controls, select Delete or the trash icon. If Library offers a Recently deleted area, you may be able to restore the file there until permanent deletion, or choose Delete forever to remove it sooner.
OpenAI says deleted Library files are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days. Exceptions apply if a file has already been de-identified and disassociated from your account, or if it must be retained longer for security or legal obligations. Library controls and availability may differ by account or workspace. See OpenAI’s Library guide.
Delete the conversation separately
If you also want to remove the chat from your history, open chat history, select the conversation’s more-options menu, choose Delete, and confirm. OpenAI says a deleted chat is removed from your account view immediately; chat deletion cannot be undone or restored through Support. If the image was saved separately in Library, delete that file there as well. OpenAI states: “Deleting a chat containing files does not delete those files saved to Library.” See how to delete a chat and the Library guide.

| Action | What it affects | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Delete a Library file | The saved photo in Library | Use this to remove a separately saved image; a chat deletion alone does not remove it. |
| Delete a chat | The conversation in chat history | Deletion cannot be undone, and the Library copy needs separate deletion. |
| Archive a chat | Only its visibility in the regular sidebar | Archiving is not deletion. Archived chats remain saved under the same retention rules as other saved chats. |
| Delete a GPT, project, or its uploaded file | Content associated with that custom GPT or project | These uploads have their own lifecycle; delete the relevant file or container to trigger the applicable deletion schedule. |
OpenAI’s chat deletion guidance explains deletion and archiving. Its data retention guidance and file upload guidance cover retention and uploads in projects or custom GPTs.

What deletion does—and does not—mean
Deleted files and chats
OpenAI says deleted chats and Library files are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to the de-identification and security or legal exceptions described in its retention guidance. This is a scheduled deletion window, not a promise that every item is immediately erased from every system.
Temporary Chat is for future conversations
Temporary Chat does not appear in history unless saved, and copies may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes. It is a choice for a future conversation, not a way to erase a photo already uploaded in another chat. See how ChatGPT retains data.

Deleting a local original or changing permissions
On macOS, ChatGPT can upload images from the Photos library or filesystem and can take a photo, with relevant permissions. Removing a local original or changing macOS Photos permissions is not described as deleting a copy already uploaded to ChatGPT; use ChatGPT’s file and chat controls for that copy. See ChatGPT for macOS.
Data-use preferences are separate
For consumer accounts, model-improvement preferences and other controls are under Settings > Data controls; Memory settings are under Settings > Personalization. These preferences are not substitutes for deleting a photo or chat. Organization policies can differ on managed accounts. See OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ and its managed-workspace guidance.

If Library or its delete controls are missing
- Check that you are signed in to the account or workspace where you uploaded the image.
- Library availability and its controls can depend on plan, feature rollout, and workspace policy.
- If your account is managed by an organization, its controls or retention policy may affect what you can do. Consult the workspace administrator or applicable OpenAI workspace guidance.
OpenAI’s current Library article lists a 20 MB image upload limit. That figure is an upload limit, not a deletion rule.
