To temporarily turn off a Firefox add-on, open Extensions and Themes → Extensions and switch its toggle off. To uninstall it, open its three-dot menu and choose Remove. Disabling keeps the extension installed so you can turn it back on; removing uninstalls it. On Android, use the Add-ons or Extensions screen instead.
Disable or remove: which should you choose?
| Action | What happens | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Disable | The extension stays installed but stops running. You can enable it again with its toggle. | Temporarily turning it off or testing whether it is causing a problem. |
| Remove | The extension is uninstalled from Firefox. | Getting rid of an extension you no longer want. |
Mozilla uses “add-on” as an umbrella term; an extension is one type of add-on. Menu labels can vary by Firefox version and platform, but the relevant control is the extension’s toggle or menu.

On desktop, disable or uninstall an extension
Disable an extension temporarily
- Open the Firefox menu.
- Select Extensions and Themes, then Extensions.
- Find the extension and switch its blue toggle off. To enable it again, switch the toggle back on.
These are Mozilla’s desktop instructions in Disable or remove Add-ons, last updated June 24, 2025.
Remove an extension
- Open Extensions and Themes → Extensions.
- Find the extension and open its three-dot menu.
- Select Remove.
You can also open the extensions puzzle-piece button in the toolbar, open the extension’s menu, and choose Remove Extension. To reach the full manager from that panel, choose Manage extensions. Pinned extensions may also be managed from their toolbar context menu. See Mozilla’s toolbar extensions instructions, last updated August 27, 2026.

Change or remove a Firefox theme
Themes are managed separately from extensions. Open Extensions and Themes → Themes.
- To stop using an added theme without uninstalling it, choose Disable; Firefox returns to the System theme.
- To uninstall a user-added theme, open its three-dot menu and choose Remove. Removing the active added theme enables the System theme.
- Firefox’s built-in System, Colorways, Light, Dark, and Alpenglow themes cannot be removed.
On Firefox for Android
- Tap the three-dot menu.
- Tap Add-ons or Extensions. Depending on the interface, the Extensions Manager may appear at the end of the extension list.
- Select the extension.
- Turn off the Enabled slider to deactivate it temporarily, or tap Remove to uninstall it.

If Firefox will not let you remove an add-on
If the Add-ons Manager is unavailable or the Remove control is disabled, Mozilla recommends trying Troubleshoot Mode, then attempting removal again and restarting Firefox. An extension installed by another program may need to be removed through that program’s settings or uninstaller. See Mozilla’s guidance for add-ons that cannot be removed.
Manual deletion from a Firefox profile is an advanced fallback, not the first step. Mozilla’s instructions involve identifying the extension ID in Firefox troubleshooting information and deleting the corresponding file after quitting Firefox; global installations may be stored outside the profile. Follow the platform-specific Mozilla directions rather than guessing which file to delete.

Use extensions to diagnose a Firefox problem
Unexpected changes to your default search or home page, redirects, changed browser settings, or unusual webpage behavior can be signs of an add-on problem. Mozilla’s recommended approach is to restart Firefox with add-ons disabled. If the issue disappears, restart with add-ons enabled and disable extensions selectively to identify the one involved; then disable or remove that extension. The full steps are in Troubleshoot issues related to add-ons, last updated September 19, 2025.
