To delete location and trip history from a connected car, handle three separate places: the infotainment system, the vehicle’s connection to your automaker account, and data already stored by the automaker. Clearing the car’s screen may erase local destinations and searches, but it does not necessarily unlink the vehicle or erase records held by the company. Deleting the automaker’s app is not a substitute for either step.
The exact controls vary by make, model year, software, connected-service provider, and country. The steps below are based on current U.S. privacy information from Ford, Toyota, General Motors, and Tesla; use your vehicle’s manual and local privacy notice for instructions that apply to your car.
Choose what you want to delete or stop
“Car history” can mean several different things. Identify your goal before resetting anything:

- Clear information stored in the car: Remove recent destinations, searches, trip logs, paired phones, contacts, profiles, or app sign-ins from the infotainment system.
- Stop the vehicle’s account connection or future service access: Remove the vehicle from associated automaker accounts and, if needed, deactivate connected services or data transmission.
- Request deletion of information already held by the automaker: Use the company’s privacy or account-deletion process. A vehicle reset or service opt-out does not, by itself, establish that previously collected records have been erased.
These are distinct actions. For example, Ford says deleting its app does not disable connected-data sharing; owners must remove the vehicle from every associated account or use the prescribed vehicle reset. Ford’s privacy policy

Clear history stored in the vehicle
In the car, review navigation destinations and recent searches, trip logs, user profiles, paired phones, contacts, and signed-in apps. Look in the vehicle’s infotainment settings or owner’s manual for a control labeled along the lines of clear history, master reset, factory reset, or connectivity reset. There is no dependable universal tap sequence: menus differ by model year and system software.
A master or factory reset can also remove preferences and paired devices. Check the manual before proceeding, especially if you are keeping the vehicle and only want to clear a particular history category. Ford and GM direct owners to in-vehicle settings or vehicle-specific instructions for reset procedures. Ford · GM
Unlink the vehicle and stop connected services
Use the automaker’s app or website to remove the vehicle, commonly identified by its VIN, from each owner and shared account that has access. If your aim is to stop remote access or future connected-service transmissions, also cancel or deactivate the relevant service where the automaker provides that option. Removing only one user’s access may leave other linked accounts in place.

Ford says a vehicle associated with a Ford or Lincoln account may send connected-vehicle information, including location. To stop related remote access and transmission, remove the VIN from every associated account or perform the prescribed master/factory reset. Toyota
Toyota’s U.S. Connected Services notice covers Location Data, Remote Data, Driving Data, and Profile Data. Examples include vehicle location, last-ignition-off status such as trip distance, and, for supported profiles, saved map locations and search or routing history. Toyota says owners may opt out of Connected Services or request transmission deactivation through the Toyota app or the vehicle’s SOS button; this stops collection of certain listed categories, not necessarily deletion of historical records. Toyota Connected Services Privacy Notice
Toyota states that it stores Location Data in an identifiable format for no more than 7 years from creation and Driving Data in an identifiable format for no more than 15 years from creation. These are maximum periods in Toyota Motor North America’s notice accessed in 2026, not industry-wide retention limits. Toyota Connected Services Privacy Notice
General Motors
GM says some model-year 2019-and-later vehicles may have OnStar location controls in the infotainment system’s Privacy Settings. Disabling location services does not prevent geolocation collection in specified emergencies. To disconnect and unenroll from OnStar, GM says owners can contact an Advisor or press the in-vehicle blue button; stated connectivity and high-voltage-battery exceptions may apply. GM U.S. Consumer Privacy Statement
Tesla
Tesla’s privacy support page describes account and app routes for requesting account deletion and says active Tesla products must first be removed from the account. Its data-copy process is separate: a downloaded copy may include account information, service history, vehicle usage, infotainment settings, app usage, and Supercharging history, but downloading it does not delete the data from Tesla’s servers. Tesla’s separate privacy notice, updated February 2026, says its policy is that driving-generated vehicle data is not associated with a customer’s identity or account by default. That policy should not be generalized to other automakers or read as proof that no location data exists in the car or every Tesla service. Tesla privacy support · Tesla Customer Privacy Notice

Request deletion of records held by the automaker
If your goal includes information already collected by the company, make a separate privacy or account-deletion request. A request to access or download a copy is not the same as a request to erase information. Tesla explicitly distinguishes these actions and says that downloading a data copy does not remove it from Tesla’s servers. What a company can delete, and what it retains, depends on its policy, the service, and applicable law; do not assume that opting out or resetting the car purges all backend records. Before selling or transferring the car
Before handing the car to another person, clear locally stored personal information, remove the vehicle from every associated automaker account, and contact the automaker to transfer or cancel connected services. GM warns that personal information left in the vehicle may remain accessible to later users and encourages sellers to delete contacts, address searches, saved map addresses, and preferences. Ford also recommends a reset when selling or buying a connected vehicle. GM privacy statement · Ford privacy policy
- Use the owner’s manual to clear saved destinations, searches, profiles, paired devices, contacts, and other local data.
- Remove the VIN from every owner or shared account that is linked to the vehicle.
- Transfer or cancel the connected-service account with the automaker, as appropriate.
- If you also want backend records addressed, submit a separate privacy request.
What to check if history or access remains
- The vehicle still appears in the app: Check for other owner or shared accounts that may still be linked, and remove the VIN from each.
- Recent destinations remain on screen: Check the vehicle’s manual for separate navigation-history and user-profile controls; a reset may be needed to clear more than one category.
- You want to stop collection, not just hide history: Look for the automaker’s connected-service opt-out or transmission-deactivation procedure. Emergency or safety-related exceptions can apply.
- You want records erased from company systems: Submit a privacy or account-deletion request rather than relying on a vehicle reset, app deletion, or data-copy request.
These manufacturer procedures primarily describe U.S. services. Outside the United States, consult the automaker’s privacy notice for your country; available controls and deletion rights can differ.
