Yes—you can keep your Google Account and remove Google Maps location data. The important distinction is between Timeline (visits and routes), Maps history (searches and other Maps actions), and activity stored by other Google services. Delete each data set from its own control, and check devices, backups, photos, and browser history if you need a more complete cleanup.
What “Google Maps location history” means now
Google uses more than one record for activity associated with Maps. The control you need depends on what you want removed. Google currently calls the visits-and-routes feature Timeline; searches and many other interactions appear under Maps history.

If you only delete Maps history, visits can still appear in Timeline. If you only delete Timeline, searches and directions can still appear in Maps history. Treat the two as separate jobs.
Before you delete anything
Use this short checklist to avoid deleting the wrong account or assuming that one control covers every copy:

- Confirm the Google Account shown in Maps or at the top of your Google Account settings is the one you intend to keep.
- Decide whether you want to remove a single item, a date range, today’s activity, or all available history.
- List every phone, tablet, or other eligible device on which Timeline has been used.
- Decide whether an encrypted Timeline backup should also be removed or disabled.
- Note whether your goal includes searches, directions, saved places, reviews, photos, browser records, or only visits and routes.
- Export or copy anything you are legally or personally required to retain before confirming deletion. Google’s controls are destructive once confirmed.
Google says Timeline is normally off by default and is an opt-in feature. When enabled, it can save precise device location regularly on each eligible signed-in device, even when Google apps are not open. That is why checking every device matters.
Delete visits and routes from Timeline
Android: turn Timeline off and delete its activity
Google’s documented Android path is:
- Open the Google Maps app.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Select Your Timeline.
- Tap More.
- Open Location & privacy settings.
- Tap Timeline is on.
- Choose Turn off or Turn off and delete activity.
The exact wording can differ as Google updates the interface. If you choose Turn off, new Timeline records stop being saved on that device, but existing visits and routes are not automatically removed. Choose the deletion option, or use the Timeline deletion controls separately, when you want old records gone. Use the account-level Timeline controls
You can also manage Timeline from the Google Account’s current Timeline activity page while signed in. Open the Timeline control, review the dates shown, and select the offered option for all activity or only a selected portion. This is useful when you are working from a computer or when the Maps app does not show the same menu. Google may place the control under Maps Timeline or under activity and privacy settings, and labels can differ by account and device version.

Those require their own review.
Delete only part of Timeline
Open Timeline, review the dates and places shown, and use its delete control to remove selected portions rather than everything. The available interface can let you remove individual records or a chosen span. Read the confirmation carefully: a partial deletion is different from switching the feature off, and the controls may be presented differently on different accounts.
For account-level instructions and the current list of supported Timeline controls, use Google Account Help: Manage your Timeline data. If the page you see does not match an older screenshot or description, follow the labels displayed in your signed-in account.
Understand device storage and backup
Google says Timeline is stored on eligible devices and can optionally have an encrypted backup on Google’s servers. Deleting Timeline on one device may therefore not remove a copy on another device, and data can remain in a backup. Check each signed-in device and the backup controls presented with Timeline. If you are changing phones, do not assume that removing the app or signing out has deleted the Timeline database.

A practical order is to clear the old phone, inspect the Timeline backup setting, then check the replacement phone after it has been restored or signed in. If a device was restored from a backup, review Timeline again because an older local copy can reappear. Keep a note of which account is active on each device; multiple signed-in accounts make it easy to inspect the wrong profile.

Delete searches, directions, and other Maps interactions
On a computer
- Sign in to the Google Account you are keeping.
- Open Google Maps.
- Open the main menu and choose Maps history.
- For one entry, select its delete control and confirm.
- To clear more, use the page’s delete control and choose Today, a Custom range, or All time, then confirm.
The Maps history page also describes deleting history associated with a selected place. Use that option when one location’s interactions are the problem, rather than clearing unrelated activity. The current procedure is documented by Google Maps Help: Manage your Maps history.
What Maps history includes
Maps history can include searching for a place, requesting directions, viewing a selected place, sharing a Maps link, and calling a place. These are interactions with Maps, not the same thing as a Timeline visit recorded from device location.
Deleting Maps history does not remove Timeline visits. It also does not remove saved lists or labels, related searches or website clicks, or contributions such as reviews, photos, edits, and feedback. Handle those items through the control that created them if they fall within your privacy goal.
Review other Google activity that can contain location context
Search Services History and Web & App Activity
After clearing Timeline and Maps history, open your Google Account activity controls and review Search Services History and Web & App Activity. Google warns that these services can save other location-related information while you use Google services, including a general area or an IP-derived location. Those records are not automatically removed when you clear Maps history.
Google is rolling out changes to Search Services History settings gradually, so an account may show different names or paths. If a menu is missing, start from the current activity-controls page in your signed-in Google Account rather than relying on an old step list. Google describes the privacy controls in How Google protects your privacy & keeps you in control.
Photos and camera metadata
A photo can contain precise location metadata if the camera or phone was configured to record it. Deleting Maps data does not strip coordinates from existing photos. Review the camera’s location-tag setting for future pictures and use the photo service’s own metadata tools when you need to remove coordinates from files already captured.
Browser history
Visits to Maps in a web browser can remain in that browser’s history, cache, or synced browsing activity. Clear those records through the browser’s history controls if your objective includes the local browsing trail. This is separate from Google’s Maps history page.
Stop Google Maps from retaining new Timeline data
Turning Timeline off prevents future Timeline saving on the device where you change the setting. It does not, by itself, erase old Timeline records, Maps searches, browser history, or location information held by other Google activity controls. Use the deletion choices first when you need existing records removed, then leave Timeline off if you do not want new visits collected.

If you use several phones or tablets, turn Timeline off on each one. A setting changed on one device should not be treated as a universal switch for every eligible device associated with the account.
For automatic cleanup, Google lists Timeline and Search Services History auto-delete choices of 3, 18, or 36 months. These are retention windows, not an immediate wipe. Auto-delete does not replace a manual deletion when you want existing data cleared now.
Check every device and Timeline backup
Timeline’s device-based design creates a common failure: one phone looks clean while another still contains older records. Repeat the review on each eligible phone or tablet that has used the account. If you enabled Timeline backup, inspect that backup in the current Timeline privacy settings and follow the offered deletion or disable options.
When you restore a phone from a backup or move to a new device, verify Timeline again after setup. A restored copy can make it appear that deletion failed even though the original device was cleared. Keep the account signed in while checking so you are viewing the same profile on every device.
What happens after you confirm deletion
Google Maps Help states: “When you choose to delete activity manually or activity is deleted automatically based on your auto-delete setting, we immediately start the process of removing it from the product and our systems.” That means the removal process starts when you confirm; it is not a promise that every storage system has already finished processing at that instant.
Google does not publish a fixed number of hours or days for complete backend deletion on the cited Maps history page. It also notes that limited retention can apply for business or legal requirements. Do not promise yourself that a record will disappear from every system immediately, and do not treat a still-visible item during processing as proof that the account must be deleted.
Verify that the right data is gone
If a visit still appears in Timeline
- Confirm you are viewing the same Google Account used when the visit was recorded.
- Check other phones and tablets, not just the device where you initiated deletion.
- Review the Timeline backup setting and any restored device backup.
- Refresh Timeline after the deletion process has had time to update.
If a search or direction still appears
- Open Maps history, rather than Timeline, and check whether the entry is still listed there.
- Make sure your selected date range includes the item.
- Check whether the item is actually a saved list, label, review, photo, edit, or feedback contribution; those are separate records.
- Look in Web & App Activity or Search Services History if the activity came from a broader Google service instead of Maps history.
If the menu labels do not match
Google changes settings as features roll out. Search Services History in particular is being updated gradually, and Timeline screens can differ by device and account. Use the current controls linked from Google’s help pages, look for equivalent labels such as Location & privacy settings, and avoid following a path that belongs to a different account type or device version.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Deleting the account unnecessarily: Google provides Timeline and Maps activity controls specifically so you can remove this data while keeping the account, Gmail, Drive, and other services.
- Confusing off with delete: turning Timeline off stops new collection but does not automatically erase old records.
- Clearing only one category: Maps history and Timeline are separate, and other activity controls may retain location context.
- Forgetting another device: device storage and optional backup can preserve Timeline data outside the screen you first checked.
- Expecting contributions to disappear: reviews, photos, edits, and feedback are not Maps history entries and need separate management.
- Assuming instant backend erasure: deletion begins immediately, but Google gives no fixed completion time and allows limited retention in some business or legal situations.
- Paying for a cleanup app: the required deletion controls are Google’s own account and Maps settings; third-party software is not needed for this task.
Do you need to delete your Google Account?
No. Deleting the Google Account is a much broader action that affects every service attached to it. To remove Maps location data while keeping the account, use the Timeline and Maps history controls described above, then review the other activity, device, browser, and photo locations that match your specific goal.

Frequently asked questions
Can I delete Google Maps location history without deleting Gmail or Drive?
Yes. Timeline and Maps history have their own deletion controls. Removing those records does not require deleting the Google Account or the other services connected to it.
Does deleting Maps history remove places I visited?
No. Maps history covers searches, directions, viewed places, shared links, and calls. Visits and routes are stored in Timeline and must be deleted there.
Can I delete just one day or one place?

Those are separate from Maps history. Manage reviews, photos, edits, feedback, saved lists, and labels through their respective Google controls, and clear photo metadata or browser history separately when necessary.
