Choose the action that matches your goal: delete selected files to keep using the drive, erase and reformat it to clear it for reuse, or follow a more cautious disposal process if it held sensitive data. These are not equivalent. Ordinary deletion does not establish that the file’s contents were overwritten, and a format is not a universal guarantee that every flash-memory cell has been sanitized.
Choose the right kind of removal
| Your goal | What to do | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Remove a few files and keep using the drive | Delete only those files in your computer’s file manager. | Deletion generally frees file-system space; it does not prove that the underlying data was overwritten. Microsoft’s SDelete documentation explains this behavior for Windows. |
| Clear the drive for reuse | Use the operating system’s erase or format function. | This removes the drive’s contents. Back up anything you want to keep, and do not treat formatting as guaranteed secure sanitization. |
| Retire a drive that held sensitive data | Use a disposal procedure appropriate to the sensitivity of the data; seek secure media disposal if you cannot establish that wiping is adequate. | The Australian Cyber Security Centre cautions that some removable media may be difficult to wipe correctly. |
Delete selected files without erasing the whole drive
- Open the flash drive in File Explorer on Windows or Finder on Mac.
- Select the files or folders you want to remove and delete them.
- If your operating system sends deleted items from removable media to Recycle Bin or Trash, empty it to remove those items from the bin as well.
That makes the files unavailable through normal browsing, but it is not the same as overwriting their contents. Microsoft’s SDelete documentation notes that Windows does not necessarily zero a file’s disk space when the file is deleted; recovery tools or raw-disk access may be able to reach data the operating system has deallocated. This describes Windows disk and file-system behavior, not a tested recovery outcome for every USB flash drive.
Erase and reformat a flash drive on Mac
Erasing deletes the drive’s contents. Apple’s Disk Utility User Guide says, “Erasing a storage device deletes everything on it.” Copy any files you need elsewhere before proceeding.
- Open Disk Utility.
- Choose View > Show All Devices.
- In the sidebar, select the flash drive itself. Check its identity carefully so you do not erase another storage device.
- Choose a partition scheme if the option is available, then choose a file-system format and enter a name for the drive.
- Click Erase, wait for the operation to finish, then click Done.
Apple’s Disk Utility guide covers macOS 27, Tahoe 26, and earlier versions. The exact formats and scheme choices depend on the device and the macOS version shown in the guide.

What the Security Options control means
Disk Utility shows Security Options only for some storage devices. Apple says the secure-erase options are unavailable for SSDs in Disk Utility. If the control is absent, Disk Utility cannot perform a secure erase on that device. Apple suggests enabling FileVault when beginning to use an SSD for more security; that advice is not a verified secure-erase procedure for a USB thumb drive.
Format a flash drive on Windows
For clearing a drive for reuse, use Windows’ format function and confirm the selected drive letter and device before starting. Formatting removes the drive’s contents, so back up anything you want to keep first.

For disposal, the Australian Cyber Security Centre’s guidance says to format removable media on Windows with Quick Format unchecked. Treat that as a disposal-oriented recommendation, not proof that every flash drive’s remapped or otherwise inaccessible storage has been sanitized. The agency also warns that some removable media may be difficult to wipe correctly.

A flash drive is not just a file system: its controller manages physical flash memory, and the available guidance does not establish a universally reliable way to overwrite every cell on every USB drive. A normal format, a full format, repeated overwrites, or generic deletion software should not be presented as a guarantee that no data can be recovered.

Microsoft’s SDelete v2.06, published and updated March 5, 2026, offers Windows command-line options for deleting files and cleaning free space. The documentation describes a default one-overwrite pass and the -c option for cleaning free space, as well as limits: cleaning free space does not securely delete file names in free disk space, and behavior depends on file-system details such as NTFS and FAT. It does not validate SDelete for every USB flash controller or establish it as universal flash-memory sanitization.
If the data is sensitive and the drive is being retired, prioritize a suitable media-disposal process rather than relying on a format whose result you cannot verify. The Australian Cyber Security Centre’s disposal guidance is available at How to dispose of your device securely.
