There are two different ways to remove an app from an Amazon Fire tablet:

  • Uninstall it to remove the app and its local files from the tablet.
  • Remove it from the home screen to hide its shortcut without uninstalling it.

Use the Settings method when the app is missing from the home screen, when you need to check how much storage it uses, or when the app will not uninstall normally.

Uninstall an app from Settings

  1. Open Settings on the Fire tablet.
  2. Tap Apps & Notifications. On some Fire OS versions, this may be called Apps & Games or simply Apps.
  3. Tap Manage All Applications or See All Applications.
  4. Find and tap the app you want to delete. You may need to choose Show All Applications first.
  5. Tap Uninstall.
  6. Confirm by tapping OK or Uninstall.

The app and its locally stored data are removed from the tablet. The exact menu names vary between Fire OS releases and tablet generations, but the path is normally under the app-management section of Settings.

Delete an app from the home screen

On many Fire tablets, you can uninstall an app directly from its icon:

  2. Touch and hold the app icon.
  3. Tap Uninstall App, Remove from Device, or a similarly named option.
  4. Confirm the removal.

If the menu only says Remove from Home or Remove from Home Screen, it will hide the shortcut but leave the app installed. Use Settings > Apps to uninstall it completely.

Remove an app from the app library

If the app is not visible on the home screen, open Apps or swipe up to open the app library. Touch and hold the app icon, then choose the uninstall or remove option if it is available. If no uninstall option appears, use the Settings method instead.

What to do when “Uninstall” is unavailable

What you see What it usually means What to do

Clear an app’s data without uninstalling it

Uninstalling is not always necessary if the problem is corrupted settings or cached files:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Apps & Notifications > Manage All Applications.
  3. Select the app.
  4. Tap Storage or Storage & Cache.
  5. Choose Clear Cache first.
  6. If the problem continues, choose Clear Storage or Clear Data, then confirm.

Clear Cache removes temporary files. Clear Storage removes the app’s local settings, downloads, and signed-in state, but it does not uninstall the app. Downloaded movies, music, books, or game data may need to be downloaded again.

Delete apps from an Amazon Kids child profile

App removal can be restricted in a child profile. Switch to the parent profile and manage the child’s content through Amazon Kids settings:

Does deleting an app cancel its subscription?

No. Uninstalling an app does not cancel a subscription, membership, or free trial. Cancel it separately through the service that bills you. For an Amazon-billed subscription, open Amazon’s website or the Amazon app, go to Account, then Memberships & Subscriptions, and select the relevant subscription. If Apple, Google, or another provider handles billing, cancellation must be completed through that provider.

Can you reinstall a deleted app?

Usually, yes. Uninstalling an app removes it from the tablet, not necessarily from your Amazon account. Open Appstore, search for the app, and tap Download. Previously purchased apps generally do not need to be purchased again, although availability can change by country, device, Fire OS version, and app developer support.

It’s great for downloading games, videos, books, and music for their on-the-go educational entertainment.

Fire tablets do not support every Android app. Fire OS is Android-based, but the Amazon Appstore filters listings by Fire OS version, hardware, marketplace, and developer compatibility. An app that was available on an older Fire tablet may not appear on a newer or older model. Fire TV availability also does not prove that an app supports Fire tablets.

If an app will not uninstall

  1. Restart the tablet: hold the power button, tap Restart, and try again.
  2. Install pending tablet updates through Settings > Device Options > System Updates > Check Now.
  3. Try uninstalling from Settings > Apps rather than from the icon.
  4. Check whether you are using a child profile or a restricted profile.
  5. Make sure you are selecting the installed app rather than a web shortcut or a preinstalled Fire OS component.

A sideloaded app may appear in the app list like an Appstore app, but its package or dependencies can behave differently. Avoid downloading replacement APKs from unknown sites just to remove or reinstall an app. If you installed an APK for testing, removal may require the same app-management screen or an ADB command such as adb uninstall package.name from a computer with USB debugging configured.

Why can I only remove an app from the home screen?

Remove from Home hides the shortcut but does not uninstall the app. Open the app’s entry under Settings > Apps and look for Uninstall.

Can I uninstall preinstalled Amazon apps?

Essential Fire OS apps normally cannot be uninstalled. Some optional system apps provide a Disable option instead.

Does uninstalling an app delete my Amazon purchase?

No. It removes the local installation. If the app remains available for your tablet and marketplace, you can usually download it again without repurchasing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will deleting an app cancel its subscription?

No. Cancel subscriptions separately through Amazon, the app provider, or the billing service that manages the subscription.

How do I free up space without deleting an app?

Go to Settings > Apps > [app] > Storage and tap Clear Cache. Use Clear Storage only if you are willing to remove the app’s local settings and downloads.

The Bottom Line

For a complete removal, use Settings > Apps & Notifications > Manage All Applications, select the app, and tap Uninstall. Removing an icon from the home screen is not always the same as uninstalling the app, and deleting the app does not cancel any subscription attached to it.
