A warehouse-club membership is worth paying for only if the savings on things your household would buy anyway, plus benefits you will actually use, exceed the membership fee and extra costs such as travel, waste, or spoilage. Compare your own repeat purchases at local prices; there is no universal club or household size that guarantees a good deal.
Calculate the membership’s net annual value
Use this formula, counting only purchases you would otherwise make and benefits you expect to use:
Net annual value = comparable savings on planned purchases + usable rewards and benefits − annual fee − incremental travel and waste costs.

A discount on an item you would not otherwise buy is not a saving. For each planned purchase, compare the unit price for the same size and comparable quality, and include any delivery charge, tax difference, or extra trip cost that applies.

Build a household-specific worksheet

Use realistic consumption, not the package size you hope to use. If an item is likely to expire, spoil, or sit unused, count only the portion you expect to consume and treat the rest as waste.
Compare nearby clubs using your own basket
For each club you could reasonably visit, compare its current fee with your own repeat basket and the route you would actually take. Prices and availability differ by location, so a published basket result cannot predict your household’s total. In AARP’s 2026 comparison of 28 grocery items, Sam’s Club had the lowest total among the clubs compared, BJ’s was close behind, and Costco ranked third; that result describes that basket, not a universal ranking (AARP, September 3, 2026).

Do not treat a company’s advertised basket saving as a forecast for your family. BJ’s FY2025 SEC filing says it can save up to 25% on a representative basket of manufacturer-branded groceries versus traditional supermarkets; that is the company’s qualified statement, not an independent result or a guaranteed household saving (FY2025 SEC filing).

Account for location, fuel, and services
- Check whether a club is close enough to your normal errands to avoid a special journey. Include extra driving time and cost in the calculation.
- Value fuel savings only on gallons you would buy there anyway. Kiplinger reported a potential warehouse-club advantage of 5–25 cents per gallon versus local averages in March 2026, but actual prices vary by place and date; compare nearby pumps rather than applying that range as a promise (Kiplinger, March 3, 2026).
- For pickup, delivery, shipping, pharmacy, optical, or other services, check eligibility, availability, thresholds, and fees. Count a benefit only if it replaces spending or effort you would otherwise incur.
Decide whether a higher rewards tier pays for itself
Compare the extra annual fee with rewards on eligible spending—not all spending. At the fees listed on Costco’s US join page on October 4, 2026, Executive costs $65 more per year than Gold Star. At the official page’s stated 2% reward rate on qualified purchases, $65 ÷ 0.02 = $3,250 in qualified annual spending to match that added fee. This is a break-even calculation, not a guarantee of net savings: excluded purchases, reward rules or caps, and whether you can use the reward can change the result (Costco US join page; Costco membership FAQ).
Apply the same method to other upgrades: subtract the standard-tier fee from the higher-tier fee, then compare that difference with the realistic value of eligible rewards and benefits. Sam’s Club Plus and BJ’s Club+ list rewards, but their eligibility rules and the services included differ; review each club’s current terms before assigning a dollar value.

Why household size alone does not decide it
A larger household may use bulk quantities faster, but size by itself does not establish value. What matters is the combination of recurring purchases, package sizes, storage, how quickly products are consumed, local alternatives, and the cost of reaching the club. A small household with a few reliable bulk purchases and a convenient location may benefit; a larger household can still lose money if it buys excess or pays for a long special trip.

Do not count a lower unit price when you would switch to a product your household dislikes, or when a larger package means part of it will go unused.

Review the membership before renewal
- For a representative period, keep receipts and note which planned purchases came from the club and what they would have cost at your usual store.
- Track rewards actually earned and benefits actually used, applying each plan’s eligibility rules and fees.
- Subtract added travel, delivery or service charges, and the value of products that spoiled or remained unused.
- Compare the resulting net value with the fee due at renewal. Renew, downgrade, upgrade, or cancel according to that result—not the original estimate.
Costco says its double guarantee applies to all membership levels and includes a refund of membership cost, subject to limitations. Check the current terms before relying on a refund as part of your decision (Costco Customer Service).
