Treat an AI coding assistant’s suggestion as an unverified change, not as an explanation or proof. The reliable workflow is to capture the original failure, reduce it to a reproducible case, inspect the complete diff in the project’s context, test a narrow hypothesis, and rerun the original and broader checks. Only then should you decide whether the patch belongs in the codebase.

This approach works whether the suggestion came from an IDE completion, a chat window, or an autonomous coding agent. Generated code can compile and still be semantically wrong, insecure, incompatible with a dependency, or inconsistent with what the feature is meant to do.

What makes AI-suggested code difficult to debug?

An assistant can produce a convincing explanation and a syntactically valid patch without having the context a maintainer uses every day. It may not know an undocumented business rule, a deployment constraint, an older supported runtime, or why an apparently redundant validation exists. It can also infer the wrong cause from an error message and then generate a larger change that hides the original defect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Syntax is only the first gate. Compilation, type checking, or a formatter may pass while the behavior is wrong.
  • Tests can be misleading. A suggestion may satisfy a narrow test while breaking an untested path, or it may weaken a test so that the suite appears green.
  • Interfaces change. An API name, option, or package can be hallucinated, removed in the version you use, or valid only for a different language binding.
  • Security is contextual. A patch that fixes an exception may introduce injection, authorization, data-exposure, secret-handling, or dependency risks.
  • Intent is not visible in the prompt alone. Requirements, documentation, adjacent modules, and established patterns determine whether a technically plausible change is the right change.

The assistant is useful for generating hypotheses, test cases, and search terms. Your evidence must come from the running program, the codebase, authoritative documentation, and review.

1. Capture the failure before changing the suggestion

Do not begin by asking for a rewrite. Preserve the state that demonstrates the problem so you can tell whether a later edit actually fixes it.

Record the expected and actual behavior

  • Write the feature or requirement in observable terms: input, action, output, and relevant side effects.
  • Copy the complete error message, stack trace, failing assertion, HTTP response, log entry, or unexpected output. Include line numbers and error codes.
  • Save the smallest input that currently fails, along with the command, request, or UI path that triggers it.
  • Note environment details that can affect reproduction, such as language and runtime version, operating system, feature flags, database state, and configuration.
  • State what should have happened and what happened instead. “The request returned 200” is not the same as “the record was authorized and persisted.”

Keep the original failing test or reproduction intact. If the assistant proposes a fix before you have this record, ask it to analyze only the evidence you supplied and to separate observations from guesses.

Use an evidence-only prompt

A prompt such as Based only on this error, stack trace, and the relevant code, list the observations, then give two plausible causes and the evidence that would distinguish them. Do not propose a patch yet. discourages premature certainty. The output is a set of leads to investigate, not a diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Make the problem reproducible and as small as possible

A reproducible failure turns a broad debugging conversation into an experiment. Start with an existing failing test if one exists. Otherwise, write a focused regression test from the intended behavior before editing production code.

Reduce the input and execution path

  1. Start from the failing command or test and remove unrelated setup, records, flags, and requests one at a time.
  2. Keep reducing until removing any remaining element makes the failure disappear.
  3. Pin data and time-dependent inputs where practical. A fixed clock, deterministic seed, or isolated temporary database can distinguish a code defect from environmental noise.
  4. Run the reduced case more than once. An intermittent result needs a different experiment: record frequency, concurrency, timing, and external services rather than treating one pass as a fix.

The smallest reproducer should express the contract you care about. For example, if a parser must reject an empty field, the regression test should assert that behavior directly instead of only asserting that a downstream request fails.

Make the regression test independent

A useful test fails with the old code and passes with a correct implementation. Avoid copying the assistant’s implementation into the test, calling the same helper through a different name, or asserting an internal detail when the requirement is behavioral. Include the original failing input, the expected result, and any error or side-effect requirement.

3. Inspect the complete diff in project context

Read the actual changed files, not only the assistant’s summary. Review additions, deletions, generated files, configuration changes, and lockfile changes. A one-line code edit can alter a serializer, permission check, or build target indirectly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the patch with the project’s rules

  • Check the requirement, issue description, API contract, and user-facing documentation.
  • Compare neighboring implementations for naming, validation order, error handling, transaction boundaries, and logging conventions.
  • Look for assumptions about nullability, time zones, encoding, retries, ordering, idempotency, and concurrency.
  • Confirm that the change is in the supported module and does not bypass an established abstraction.
  • Review configuration, migration, schema, and deployment implications separately from the application code.

Ask: “What behavior does this change assume that the requirement does not state?” That question often exposes a plausible patch that solves only the example in the prompt.

Check for accidental scope expansion

Reject unrelated refactors while debugging a focused failure unless they are necessary and reviewed separately. Extra formatting, renamed symbols, broad dependency upgrades, and generated-file churn make it harder to identify which change affected the result and increase the review surface.

4. Form a narrow, testable hypothesis

Once you have a reproducer and a diff, connect the observed symptom to specific code. A good hypothesis predicts an observation you can test; an assistant’s explanation is not evidence by itself.

Ask for competing causes

Useful prompts include:

  • What is the smallest reproducible failure, based only on this error and the relevant code?
  • Give me two plausible causes, the evidence for each in this code, and one test that would distinguish them.
  • Point to the exact lines that could produce this value. What would I observe if that path were the cause?
  • Suggest the smallest change that addresses the failing test; do not modify or remove tests.

Prefer one-variable experiments: add a diagnostic assertion, substitute a controlled input, or run the same test with a single option changed. If the result does not match the prediction, discard the hypothesis instead of asking the assistant to defend it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate diagnosis from implementation

Do not let a proposed patch become the definition of the bug. First establish which invariant is violated and where. Then evaluate the smallest implementation that restores that invariant. This prevents a workaround—such as swallowing an exception or returning a default value—from being mistaken for a correction.

5. Run checks in an order that preserves meaning

Run the targeted regression test first, then the checks that cover the changed area, followed by compilation or build, linting, static analysis, and the project’s normal CI checks. GitHub’s official review guidance states, “Always run automated tests and static analysis tools first.” The exact commands depend on the repository; use its documented scripts and CI configuration rather than inventing a substitute.

Stage What to run What a useful result tells you
Original reproducer The failing test, request, or command Whether the reported symptom is still present
Focused regression test The new or restored test for the requirement Whether the proposed behavior is exercised directly
Related tests Tests for the module, endpoint, data type, or integration Whether nearby behavior regressed
Compiler and build The project’s normal type-check, compile, and build tasks Whether the change fits supported targets and generated artifacts
Lint and static analysis Configured linters, type analyzers, and quality rules Whether warnings or suspicious paths were introduced
CI and security checks Repository-required workflows and approved scanners Whether integration, policy, and security gates still pass

Read warnings as well as failures. A green command can still conceal skipped tests, an untested platform, a warning promoted only in CI, or a test that no longer asserts the important result.

Do not “fix” a failing test by removing its meaning

Deleting, skipping, weakening, or changing an assertion can make a suite pass without repairing the behavior. If the requirement genuinely changed, update the requirement and test together and have that change reviewed. Otherwise, keep the failing test and investigate the implementation or the test fixture.

6. Verify APIs, packages, and licenses

For every unfamiliar symbol in the diff, check the authoritative documentation for the exact language, library version, and platform. Confirm the signature, error behavior, defaults, thread-safety or async behavior, and deprecation status. A name that sounds right is not proof that an API exists.

Audit new dependencies

  • Confirm that the package exists in the intended registry and supports your runtime and target platforms.
  • Check its maintenance signals, release history, transitive dependencies, and provenance.
  • Review the license against your project’s policy; a technically useful package can still be unsuitable to distribute.
  • Inspect lockfile and integrity changes rather than accepting a broad version range generated by the assistant.
  • Prefer an existing, approved dependency when it provides the required capability.

Ask the assistant, Which APIs and dependencies in this diff need verification against official documentation? Then perform those checks yourself. Treat links or references it invents as leads until they match the vendor or project’s actual documentation.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

7. Exercise edge cases, security, and maintainability

After the happy path works, test the boundaries implied by the requirement. The relevant set depends on the code, but commonly includes empty, null, malformed, oversized, duplicate, reordered, expired, unauthorized, and concurrently modified inputs. Also test failures from dependent services, timeouts, partial writes, retries, and restarts where those conditions are possible.

Review security-sensitive paths explicitly

  • Trace untrusted input from entry point to parser, query, command, template, log, and response.
  • Verify authentication and authorization at the operation that changes or reveals data, not only at a surrounding route.
  • Check that secrets, tokens, personal data, and internal errors are not exposed in logs or client responses.
  • Review deserialization, file access, redirects, shell execution, cryptography, and dependency installation when present.
  • Confirm that error handling fails closed where the requirement calls for protection.

Automated security analysis can help find candidate vulnerabilities, but it complements established security practices and human review. OpenAI describes Codex Security as a research preview for ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu, Business, and Pro users; availability can change, so verify current eligibility before relying on it. Anthropic’s March 16, 2026 article describes an on-demand /security-review command and a GitHub Actions workflow for Claude Code; setup and access should likewise be checked against current documentation. Neither type of automated review replaces a qualified human review for complex or sensitive changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check maintainability, not just correctness

Look for duplicated logic, unclear names, hidden global state, unnecessary complexity, missing observability, and error messages that cannot support the next investigation. A patch that passes today’s test but makes future failures opaque is not a complete fix. Ask whether another maintainer can explain why the code is correct from the requirement and the tests.

8. Verify the final outcome and review the change

  1. Review the final diff after all edits, including test and configuration changes.
  2. Run the original reproducer and confirm the expected behavior, not merely the absence of the old exception.
  3. Run the focused regression test and the relevant suite again after the final edit.
  4. Run the project’s compilation, static-analysis, lint, build, CI, and required security checks.
  5. Confirm that no test was deleted, skipped, or weakened without an explicitly reviewed requirement change.
  6. Check API, dependency, license, edge-case, authorization, and data-handling decisions one last time.
  7. Have a teammate review complex, high-impact, or security-sensitive changes.

Accept the suggestion only when the observed behavior, code intent, project conventions, and review evidence agree. “The assistant said it was fixed” is not an acceptance criterion.

Choosing a debugging style

Different workflows can be useful, but they should be judged by the evidence they produce rather than by how much code an assistant generates.

Workflow Strength Risk to control Minimum safeguards
Test-first manual debugging Begins with an independently defined behavior and a clear failure May take longer to formulate a reproducer Keep the regression test independent; inspect the full diff and run the broader suite
Assistant-led diagnosis Can suggest competing causes, missing cases, and focused experiments quickly Persuasive explanations may be mistaken for proof Provide observed evidence, demand a narrow hypothesis, and verify every claim through execution and documentation
Automated analysis and security review Finds patterns and candidate issues consistently at scale False positives, missed business logic, and incomplete context Validate findings in code, preserve normal security practice, and obtain human review for sensitive changes

Troubleshooting branches when the checks disagree

The assistant’s patch compiles, but the original failure remains

Return to the smallest reproducer. Confirm that you are running the edited artifact and the intended configuration, then trace the input to the failing line. The hypothesis may be wrong, or the test may exercise a different path than the reported failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The focused test passes, but related tests fail

Compare assumptions about shared state, ordering, defaults, schema, and error handling. The patch may solve the isolated case while violating a surrounding contract. Keep the related failure as evidence; do not narrow the suite until the scope of the requirement is settled.

The test passes only after it is skipped or changed

Restore the original assertion and treat the change as unresolved. If the expected behavior truly changed, document that product or API decision and update the implementation and tests in one reviewed change.

The assistant proposes a package or API that cannot be verified

Do not install it merely because the name is plausible. Search the official documentation and registry for the exact version and platform. Replace it with an approved interface or revise the design if no supported API exists.

A security scanner reports a possible vulnerability

Reproduce the data flow and determine whether the reported source reaches the stated sink under realistic permissions and configuration. Fix confirmed issues, document a justified false positive, and retain human review. Do not disable the scanner to make the pipeline green.

A compact review checklist

  • Original error, expected behavior, environment, and smallest failing input are recorded.
  • A reproducible regression test exists and fails for the old behavior.
  • The complete diff matches requirements, documentation, and local patterns.
  • The diagnosis names a specific code path and a testable prediction.
  • Targeted, related, build, lint, static-analysis, CI, and applicable security checks ran after the final edit.
  • No test was removed or weakened to manufacture a pass.
  • Unfamiliar APIs, packages, versions, licenses, and provenance were verified.
  • Boundary, failure, authorization, input-handling, and data-exposure cases were reviewed.
  • The original reproducer now demonstrates the intended result.
  • A human reviewed complex or sensitive changes.
