To change Google Calendar’s appearance in a desktop browser, open Settings > Appearance. There you can choose a Light, Dark, or Device default background, and—when Light is selected—an event color set and calendar density. Google limits the event color-set and density controls to computers.
Change Google Calendar’s appearance in a browser
- Open Google Calendar on a computer.
- At the top right, click Settings, then select Appearance.
- Under background, choose Light, Dark, or Device default.
- If you selected Light, choose an event color set and density if you want to adjust them.
- To apply Dark theme, click Done.
Google’s dark-theme instructions specify clicking Done to apply the setting. For event color set and density, see Google’s computer instructions.
Choose a background
| Background | What it does | Event color set |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Uses a light calendar background. | Can be changed. |
| Dark | Uses a dark calendar background. | Cannot be changed while Dark is selected. |
| Device default | Uses the device’s preferred appearance. | Cannot be changed while Device default is selected. |
Google documents the three background options and notes that the color set is unavailable when the background is Dark or Device default. Google Calendar Help: Use Dark theme in Calendar.

Google’s Calendar accessibility guide covers dark theme, calendar views, color labels, event color set, and density.
