You can make Ubuntu’s GNOME desktop more colorful by changing its wallpaper and the appearance options available in your Ubuntu release, then optionally adding icon, cursor, or shell themes. Start with Ubuntu’s built-in Settings; use extensions or GNOME Tweaks only when the look you want is not available there. Menu labels and options differ by release, and third-party shell styling can be less predictable.
Check your Ubuntu release and GNOME version first
Appearance controls and extension compatibility depend on the software installed on your system. Before following version-specific instructions, identify your Ubuntu release and GNOME Shell version. Ubuntu’s customization guidance covers desktop, cursor, and icon themes, while the exact controls exposed in Settings can vary between releases. See Ubuntu’s desktop appearance guidance.
Do not assume a screenshot or a menu path from another Ubuntu release will match yours. If an option named in a guide is missing, check the documentation for your release before installing extra software.

Start with the built-in appearance controls
Change the desktop background
Open Ubuntu’s Settings and look for the Background panel. Select an available image or add a picture of your own to establish the color palette for the desktop. The Ubuntu Noble gnome-control-center manual documents the background panel; its details apply to Noble and the manual’s listed package version, not necessarily every Ubuntu release. Review theme, accent, icon, and cursor options
In Settings, inspect the appearance options your release provides. Ubuntu’s controls may include a light or dark style and accent colors, but the exact choices and labels are release-dependent. If your Settings offers an accent color, choose one that complements the wallpaper rather than expecting it to recolor every application.
Ubuntu’s customization guidance also identifies icon and cursor themes as ways to change the desktop’s appearance. Use the options available in your release; if Settings does not expose a theme selector, GNOME Tweaks may offer less common appearance controls. Ubuntu’s Noble manual notes that gnome-control-center is not meant to expose every available setting, and points to GNOME Tweaks or gsettings for uncommon options. You do not need to use command-line settings for ordinary wallpaper changes.

Use extensions or theme tools only when needed
GNOME Shell extensions can add or alter desktop features, but they are separate from Ubuntu’s standard appearance controls. GNOME supports installing extensions for one user or system-wide; the install location and method affect who can use them. Before installing one, check that it supports the GNOME Shell version on your computer. Compatibility cannot be assumed across Ubuntu releases. See GNOME’s extension installation guidance.

Use your system’s version information or release-specific Ubuntu documentation rather than relying on a theme’s name alone.
- Review the extension’s compatibility information. Confirm that it lists support for your GNOME Shell version and understand what visual or functional changes it makes.
- Install one change at a time. This makes it easier to identify which extension or theme caused an unexpected result.
- Keep a way back. Know how to disable the extension or restore the prior appearance setting before making the change.
Understand the trade-off with Shell themes
Changing application icons or the pointer is not the same as replacing GNOME Shell’s own theme, which affects desktop elements such as panels and menus. Shell theming is optional and carries more compatibility uncertainty. GNOME’s archived guidance warns that Shell theming can cause incorrect behavior; consult the archived GNOME Shell theming guidance before relying on it.

The User Themes extension is intended to load themes from a user directory, but that role does not guarantee that a particular theme works with your Shell version. The User Themes extension listing describes its purpose.
The Personalize extension listing describes accent-color and variant controls, but currently limits its support to Adwaita and notes that some widgets may not be themed perfectly. Those constraints belong to that listing and should not be generalized to all themes or releases. Review the Personalize extension listing and verify its current compatibility before installing.

Recover if the desktop looks wrong
- If the problem began after adding an extension, disable the newest extension first.
- If the change came from a theme selector, restore the previous theme or return to the default appearance.
- If only some applications look different, check whether the selected styling applies to those applications; Shell themes and application themes do not necessarily affect the same elements.
- Before trying another theme or extension, confirm its compatibility with the installed GNOME Shell version.
