To limit what apps can access, review permissions on your phone and change each app to the least access that still lets its features work. On iPhone, start at Settings > Privacy & Security; on Android, check permissions by app or category. Then review access history and account-level settings: operating-system permissions are only one part of mobile privacy.
Start with an app-permission audit
Permissions control whether an app can access data or features such as location, contacts, photos, camera, and microphone. You can review access by category or app, but a category list may not show an app until it has requested that permission.
On iPhone
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Select a category, such as Location Services, Contacts, Photos, Bluetooth, Microphone, Camera, or Health.
- Review the apps listed and adjust access based on the feature you use. Apple describes the available data categories and location controls in its iPhone privacy and Location Services guide.
On Android
- To check one app, open Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions.
- To review by permission type, look for Permission manager or the privacy and permissions area in Settings.
- For each permission, select the least access that supports the feature you need. Depending on the device and permission, choices may include allowing access all the time, only while using the app, asking every time, or denying it.
Android settings and labels vary by release and manufacturer. If a path differs, search Settings for the app name, “permissions,” or the permission category. Google’s Android app-permission guide explains the general controls.
Choose location access app by app
Location can enable maps, weather, ride-hailing, and other features. An app that needs your location only when you use it may not need ongoing background access. Change access app by app rather than assuming that one setting suits every use.

iPhone
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Select an app and choose the least access that preserves the function you want.
- Where available, consider whether the app needs precise location or whether a less precise location is enough.
Apple documents app-level location permissions in its Location Services guide. Turning location off may limit app or device features.
Android
- Open the app’s permissions and select Location, or find Location in the device’s Permission manager.
- Choose among the options shown on your phone, such as while-using access, all-the-time access, ask every time, or deny, if supported.
- Check Use precise location. Turn it off when approximate location is sufficient for the feature.
Available choices depend on the Android version, device, and permission. Some devices or app-store listings may show a disclosure when an app says it shares location data with third parties. That disclosure depends on device and store support and on developer-provided labels; its absence is not proof that no sharing occurs. See Google’s location-sharing disclosure guidance.

Review camera and microphone access
iPhone
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera or Microphone and change access for individual apps. iPhone displays a green indicator when the camera is in use and an orange indicator when the microphone is in use. Apple explains these controls and indicators in its hardware-access guide.
Android
Review camera and microphone under each app’s permissions or in Permission manager. On supported devices, Android also offers device-wide Camera access and Microphone access controls for a quick pause. These switches affect access broadly, so turn them back on when you need camera or microphone features. Google’s permission guidance covers app controls and unused-app settings.

Use permission history to spot access you did not expect
iPhone App Privacy Report
App Privacy Report can show how apps use granted permissions and their network activity. Find it in Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report. Treat it as a review aid, not a complete record of every data practice. Apple also offers Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking for deciding whether apps may ask to track activity across other companies’ apps and websites. Apple Support says: “All apps are required to ask your permission before tracking you or your iPhone across websites or apps owned by other companies (for example, for advertising or to share your information with data brokers).” This governs that tracking permission; it does not mean all data collection stops. Details are in Apple’s guide to what you share on iPhone.
Android Privacy Dashboard
Open Settings > Privacy > Privacy Dashboard, or search Settings for “Privacy Dashboard” if the path differs. Select a permission to see which apps accessed it and when. Google’s documentation specifies a seven-day history on Android 13 and a 24-hour history on Android 12; those windows are version-specific and should not be assumed for every handset. See Google’s Privacy Dashboard guidance.

Revoke access from apps you no longer use
If you do not use an app, removing its permissions reduces access it can exercise on the device. On Android, review unused-app settings as well as individual permissions; supported versions can pause activity and remove permissions for apps left unused. The exact behavior and label vary by device. On iPhone, return to the relevant category under Privacy & Security and switch off access for that app.
Before revoking a permission, consider whether the app’s core function depends on it. You can usually restore access later if a feature stops working.

Understand what permissions do not control
Account activity is separate
Changing an app permission does not necessarily stop information from being saved to an online account. Google says its Android personalization index can be configured to choose which app data feeds it, while enabled Web & App Activity may still save app activity in the account. Review the relevant account controls as well as phone permissions; see Google’s shared-data settings guidance.
IP addresses can still suggest a rough location
Websites and apps may infer approximate location from an IP address, independently of an app’s device-location permission. Google discusses this exposure and VPNs in its privacy and control guidance. A VPN is relevant only to that specific network-based exposure; it does not replace app-permission controls or account settings.
Emergency location is a separate case
Turning off the device location setting can limit location-based features, but it should not be treated as a guarantee that emergency location will never be transmitted. Emergency location services or the mobile carrier may still send location to emergency responders. Google explains this distinction in its Android location-settings guidance.
