To crop a picture in Google Slides on a computer, select it, click Crop Image, drag the blue edge handles to frame it, then press Enter or click elsewhere on the slide. To crop it into a shape, use the arrow beside Crop Image and choose a shape. You can also adjust color, transparency, brightness, contrast, and borders with Slides’ built-in image controls.
Crop a picture in Google Slides on a computer
- Open the presentation and select the picture.
- Click Crop Image in the toolbar. Google describes cropping as a way to “trim the edges of an image or remove an unwanted section.”
- Drag the blue handles on the picture’s edge to set the visible framing. Drag inward to trim the image; adjust the framing until the area you want is visible.
- Press Enter or click elsewhere on the slide to finish.
These steps follow Google’s computer instructions for cropping and adjusting images.
Crop an image into a shape
Google calls this operation masking: it changes the image’s visible outline to a selected shape. Select the image, click the arrow beside Crop Image, and choose a shape. Drag the shape’s colored handles to refine what appears inside it. Masking changes how the image is displayed on the slide; it does not permanently alter the original image file.
Edit a picture’s appearance
Select the image and open Format options. The desktop controls documented by Google include:

- Recolor: choose a color treatment.
- Adjustments: change opacity, brightness, or contrast.
- Border color: add an outline to the image.
To discard image edits and return to the original photo inserted into the presentation, right-click the image and choose Reset image.
Crop or edit an image in the Slides mobile app
Android
- Open the presentation in the Google Slides app and tap the image.
- Tap Crop Image, then drag the border to frame the image.
- Tap elsewhere on the slide to finish.
To mask the image on Android, tap Crop Image, tap Mask Image, choose a shape, and adjust its border. Google’s Android help page also documents Recolor and adjustments for transparency, brightness, and contrast.

iPhone and iPad
Google documents crop and mask controls in the Slides app for iPhone and iPad. For image color adjustments in Docs or Slides, its mobile help directs users to a computer; resetting an image in Slides also requires a computer. Because controls vary by platform, use the applicable iPhone and iPad instructions rather than assuming the desktop toolbar layout applies.
When to use Gemini image editing
For reframing, shape masks, and appearance changes, use Slides’ standard image controls. Gemini-assisted editing is a separate, optional workflow for changes beyond those controls: on an eligible account, select an image and choose Edit image to open a prompt-based workflow where you can preview, replace, or insert a generated result. Availability depends on access through an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan, or Google Workspace Experiments; check your account for current access.
