Choose the image technique according to what must stay the same: use CSS cropping when a fixed frame may clip the image, alternate crops when the composition should change across layouts, and srcset with sizes when only pixel resolution should vary. If the whole image must remain visible, use a fitting rule that preserves it instead of cropping.
Choose the strategy that matches the job
| What should change? | Use | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| The visible portion inside a fixed frame | CSS object-fit and object-position |
Renders one selected image resource in a frame; cover can clip its edges. |
| The composition at a layout breakpoint | <picture> with media-conditioned sources |
Selects a different prepared crop or composition for a layout. |
| Only the pixel dimensions of the same composition | srcset and sizes |
Lets the browser choose among dimension variants of the same image. |
| Nothing may be cropped | CSS object-fit: contain |
Shows the complete image, with possible empty bands when its ratio differs from the frame. |
These choices can be combined: for example, a page can use <picture> to select a mobile composition and srcset to offer different pixel widths of that composition. Keep the distinction clear: art direction changes what the image shows; resolution switching changes the size of an otherwise unchanged image.
Use CSS when one image can serve the frame
The MDN reference for object-fit describes how replaced content such as an <img> is fitted into its content box. With cover, the image keeps its proportions while filling the box; if the image and box have different aspect ratios, some content is clipped. The source file is not changed: the browser renders the selected resource into the element’s box.
.card-image {
width: 100%;
height: 16rem;
object-fit: cover;
object-position: 50% 35%;
}
object-position changes which portion is aligned within the frame. The example places the focal area somewhat above center; adjust it for the actual image rather than treating these coordinates as universal. Inspect the rendered result at each size where the image appears, especially when the subject is near an edge.

If a subject needs a different composition on mobile, changing object-position may not be enough. Use separately prepared crops when the layout should show a genuinely different view.
Use alternate crops when the composition should change
The HTML <picture> element lets the browser examine source conditions such as media, srcset, and type. This is art direction: for instance, a wide desktop scene can give way to a tighter portrait crop on a narrow screen. The nested <img> remains the fallback and carries the image’s alternative text and other presentation information.

Prepare each crop so it preserves the image’s important subject and information. Check the actual crops at the sizes where they will be shown. There is no universally correct focal-point coordinate or aspect ratio: the right crop depends on the content and layout. If a crop removes a person, meaningful text in an infographic, or another essential detail, choose another composition or show the complete image.
<picture> can also offer format alternatives using type. MDN notes that newer formats such as AVIF and WebP may not be supported by every browser. Check compatibility for the intended audience and retain a suitable fallback in the nested <img>.

Use responsive sources when only resolution changes
If every version shows the same composition, provide dimension variants with srcset and describe the image’s expected layout slot with sizes. The browser uses that information along with its environment to select a resource. MDN distinguishes this resolution switching from art direction, where the displayed image changes to suit the layout.

The file names, candidate widths, slot sizes, and intrinsic dimensions above are illustrative. Match the dimensions to the supplied assets and calculate sizes from the page’s actual layout. Do not assume responsive markup guarantees a particular bandwidth saving: results depend on the page, available sources, browser choice, device, and network conditions. MDN’s guide gives an illustrative 800-pixel versus 480-pixel example of 128 KB versus 63 KB, a 65 KB difference; that example is not a general benchmark or a promised saving.

Keep images accessible and layouts stable
Cropping does not remove an image element’s accessibility responsibilities. Write concise alt text that conveys the image’s relevant content in context; do not describe details that a crop has removed as though they remain visible. The MDN <img> reference covers alt text and intrinsic image dimensions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhere you know the asset dimensions, include its intrinsic width and height. These let the browser reserve space before the image loads and can mitigate layout shifts. For content images that need to fit their available layout area, a common responsive rule is:

A fixed-height crop can still suit a card or tile, but it is a design decision distinct from allowing content images to reflow. Check narrow layouts and zoom as well as the default desktop view. W3C WAI’s C37 technique describes fitting images within layout areas and checking reflow at 400% zoom without two-direction scrolling. WAI says, “Techniques are examples of ways to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG),” and the technique is not mandatory if another implementation satisfies WCAG.
Review the result before publishing
- Decide whether the whole image must remain visible or whether clipping is acceptable.
- Determine whether a breakpoint needs a new composition, a new alignment, or only different pixel dimensions.
- Check that every chosen crop retains the subject and meaningful information at its intended size.
- Confirm that the image has suitable alt text and intrinsic dimensions where known.
- Test that content images fit narrow layouts and remain usable at zoom; do not rely on a crop that hides essential content.
For the relevant implementation details, see MDN’s responsive images guide and the references linked above.
