To create a SharePoint skill, open Copilot in SharePoint from a site page or document library that is not in edit mode, describe a repeatable workflow, choose personal or site scope, review Copilot’s draft, and confirm saving. Use a personal skill for your own working preferences; choose a site skill when colleagues need the same process on that site.

Before you create a skill

  • Make sure Copilot in SharePoint is available. Microsoft says everyday Copilot in SharePoint capabilities, including creating and managing skills, are included with an active Microsoft 365 Copilot license. General availability began rolling out September 30, 2026; availability may appear in tenants as the rollout progresses. Check Microsoft’s Copilot in SharePoint setup and licensing guidance for current details.
  • Check your permissions. You need Edit permission on the site to create a site skill. View permission is enough to run an existing site skill. A skill does not give you access to a site or its content if you do not already have that access.
  • Choose a repeatable task. Skills work with supported SharePoint capabilities, such as understanding and summarizing content, organizing files and folders, and interacting with lists. They cannot connect to external systems or execute custom code, as Microsoft explains in its SharePoint skills documentation.

Choose personal or site scope

Decide who should be able to use the workflow before asking Copilot to create it. The two skill types differ in ownership, storage, and where they are available.

Skill type Best for Owner and storage Availability Permissions
Personal Your own way of handling a recurring task Owned by you and stored in your OneDrive Available to you across supported SharePoint experiences Does not grant access to content you cannot already access
Site A shared process for people working on one site Owned and managed by the site admin; stored in the site’s Agent Assets library Available only on its associated site Edit permission on the site to create; View permission to run. It does not grant access to restricted content.

These distinctions and permissions are documented by Microsoft for SharePoint skills. If you are unsure which scope fits, ask Copilot to help you choose based on who needs the workflow.

Create the skill in Copilot in SharePoint

  1. Open Copilot in SharePoint. Go to a site page or document library and open the Copilot chat panel. The page must not be in edit mode.
  2. Describe the workflow and its scope. Tell Copilot whether you want a personal or site skill, what recurring task it should handle, which content or inputs it should use, and what result it should produce.
  3. Review the draft. Check that the steps, inputs, and expected output match the workflow. Ask Copilot to revise unclear steps or account for relevant edge cases.
  4. Confirm saving. Save only after reviewing the definition. Copilot creates and activates the Agent Assets library when the first site skill is created.

For example, adapt this prompt pattern to your process: “Create a site skill to prepare a weekly project update. Use the project documents and status list. Follow these steps: identify completed work, open issues, and upcoming milestones. Return a concise update with links to the relevant files. If a status is missing, mark it as unknown rather than inferring it.” This is a prompt pattern based on Microsoft’s guidance, not a verbatim Microsoft template.

Run a skill and check that it loaded

  1. Open Copilot in SharePoint on the site where the skill is available.
  2. If useful, select the relevant files in a document library so Copilot has a clear content focus.
  3. Ask a question or give an instruction that matches the skill’s workflow. You can also invoke the skill by name.
  4. Look for the skill indicator card in the chat to confirm that Copilot loaded it.

Microsoft describes skill creation and use in its SharePoint skills guide.

Where skills are stored and what site admins can manage

Personal skills are stored in their owner’s OneDrive. Site skill files are Markdown files in the site’s Agent Assets library, at /Agent Assets/Skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md. Copilot creates and activates that library when the first site skill is created. Site admins own and manage site skills, and standard SharePoint file governance can be applied to them.

Know what skills can and cannot do

A SharePoint skill packages a repeatable workflow around supported SharePoint capabilities; it is not a general integration or code-execution mechanism. It can guide Copilot to understand or summarize content, organize files and folders, and interact with lists. It cannot connect to external systems or run custom code. A skill also respects existing access: it does not let someone use content they lack permission to view.

This article covers skills created in Copilot in SharePoint. Microsoft documents a separate skill-building experience for agents powered by the GitHub Copilot harness in Copilot Studio; that is a different workflow and product context.
