Create categories in the Microsoft Intune admin center, then select them on apps so users can browse those apps by type or function in Company Portal. Categories help with discovery; they do not assign an app to users or devices.
Create a category in the Intune admin center

Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin center.

Go to Apps > App categories to view the existing categories.

In the Create category pane, select Add, enter the category name, then select Create.

Intune accepts a category name in one language and does not translate it. Microsoft documents a maximum of 200 app categories, so use a small, consistent set of names that will make sense to your organization.

Apply a category to an app
When adding an app, select one or more built-in categories or a category created for your organization. For example, you might group an app under a functional category that reflects how employees will look for it. Microsoft’s Win32 app instructions treat category as app information and document assignment as a separate step.
After choosing a category, configure the app’s deployment assignment for the intended users or devices. A category makes an app easier to browse; it does not make the app available by itself.

Check what users see in Company Portal
In the Windows Company Portal app, users can open App categories and select a category to narrow apps by type or function. They can also search by app name or publisher, according to Microsoft’s Company Portal instructions.
Keep app names unique in Company Portal. Microsoft warns that if two apps have the same name, only one of them appears there.

Manage the category list
To use the documented management actions, open Apps > App categories and select the ellipsis beside a category. The available actions described by Microsoft are Pin to dashboard and Delete. The documented procedure does not specify a rename action, so do not assume an existing category can be renamed from this menu.
