To create an Azure Bastion shareable link, use an existing Bastion host on the Standard or Premium SKU, enable Shareable Link in its configuration, and create a link for an eligible Azure VM or virtual machine scale set with an expiration date. The link lets its recipient open the connection page without Azure portal access; they still need separate credentials to sign in to the VM.
What an Azure Bastion shareable link does
Azure Bastion is a managed service for browser-based RDP and SSH connections to Azure virtual machines. A shareable link opens a connection page for a selected VM or VM scale set without requiring the recipient to access the Azure portal. The recipient must still authenticate to the target using its username and password or private key. Microsoft Learn states: “The shareable link doesn’t contain any credentials – the admin must provide sign-in credentials to the user.” (Microsoft Learn, last updated August 11, 2026; Azure Bastion overview.)
Requirements and unsupported targets
- Bastion deployment: Bastion must already be deployed to the target VM’s virtual network or a directly peered virtual network.
- SKU: Shareable Links require Standard or Premium. They are not available on Developer or Basic. (Microsoft’s SKU comparison.)
- Target: The target must be an Azure VM or VM scale set. On-premises and other non-Azure machines are unsupported.
- Network restrictions: The feature is unsupported over Virtual WAN and for peered virtual networks across tenants.
- Permissions: Bastion resource IAM governs link visibility and management. Organization users have read access to shared links by default, which lets them view and use links but not create or delete them. Creating, deleting, deleting by token, and retrieving links require the corresponding Bastion actions.

- In the Azure portal, open the Bastion resource and select Configuration.
- Set the tier to Standard if the host is not already Standard or Premium. Turn on Shareable Link, then apply the change. Microsoft estimates that the Bastion host update takes about 10 minutes.
- Open Shareable links and select Add.
- Choose the subscription and resource group, then select the VM or VM scale set. You can select individual targets or all eligible resources; Azure creates a separate link for each selected target.
- Set the link’s expiration date and time, apply the change, and copy the generated link. Once it expires, it can no longer connect.
- Send the link and the target’s sign-in credentials separately using an appropriate channel. The link does not provide VM credentials or authenticate the recipient to the machine.

Limits and operational details
- Microsoft documents a maximum of 500 shareable links per Bastion resource.
- A Bastion resource supports up to 50 shareable-link requests at a time, counting create and delete requests.
- The shareable-link connection flow supports custom ports and protocols.
- If a target resource is deleted, its link may remain visible in the list but will no longer connect. You can remove the entry or retain it for auditing.
These counts and the roughly 10-minute update estimate are operational figures in Microsoft’s documentation, not independent performance-test results. Check the current service instructions for changes.
Known problems and workarounds
Custom-domain certificate errors
Custom domains are unsupported for shareable links. Adding specific domains to the Bastion certificate’s CN or SAN can cause a certificate error. Review Microsoft’s shareable-link troubleshooting guidance if the connection page reports a certificate issue.

Password reset for local users
The connection flow may display a Reset Password button, but Microsoft says it does not work for local users connecting through a shareable link. If a first-login policy requires a password change, arrange another supported credential workflow before sending the link.
Choosing a Bastion SKU and understanding cost
Shareable Links are available with Standard and Premium, not Developer or Basic. Standard also includes configurable host scaling, native client access, IP-based connections, custom ports, and file transfer. Premium includes Standard features plus session recording and private-only deployment. Use these differences when deciding whether the shareable-link requirement warrants a higher tier. Bastion pricing combines hourly SKU charges with outbound data transfer. Microsoft’s SKU information says Developer has no hourly charge, while dedicated Basic, Standard, and Premium tiers are paid; its comparison lists the first 5 GB per month of outbound transfer as free for the paid tiers. Billing begins when Bastion is deployed, whether or not it is in use. Exact prices vary by region and configuration, so check Microsoft’s current SKU information and live Azure pricing before estimating cost.
