You can create a new image in ChatGPT by describing it in a conversation or by opening Images and entering a prompt. To revise an image, ask for a change in the conversation or open the image editor; you can select an area for a targeted edit, but the selection is not a precise boundary.
Create an image in ChatGPT
Open a ChatGPT conversation and describe the image you want, or open Images and enter your prompt. ChatGPT Images supports both new image creation and edits to existing images. OpenAI’s Images in ChatGPT help article calls the current experience ChatGPT Images 2.5; its descriptions of sharper detail, more precise editing, and faster generation are product claims, not independent test results.
Build a prompt around the result you need
A useful prompt structure is: subject + purpose + key visual details + style + text to include, if any + aspect ratio. This is a practical way to organize the request, not a required syntax.

- Subject: Say what should appear, such as a storefront, character, or landscape.
- Purpose: Explain what the image is for, especially for a designed item such as a poster or logo.
- Key details and style: Name the colors, composition, mood, or visual style that matter most.
- Text: For a text-bearing design, provide the wording you want included and explain the design’s purpose.
- Aspect ratio: Choose one with the ratio picker or specify it in your prompt. The documented option is a ratio choice, not a guarantee of exact pixel dimensions.
If you start with a template, choose a category and template, customize it, and answer any follow-up questions. You may be able to add a reference image if an upload option appears. Templates can provide a starting point for work such as posters or logos, but the help article says they are not available in Work mode.

Wait for the image to generate
Generation can take a few minutes depending on the request’s complexity, according to OpenAI. You can continue using ChatGPT while it runs.
Revise an image after generation
For a broad change, describe what you want in the conversation. For a change tied to a particular part of the image, open the image’s editing options, select the area, and describe the edit. You can also use the editor without selecting an area; in that case, explain in the prompt which part should change.
Use a mobile sketch as a visual guide
On mobile, type @, select Sketch, draw and confirm the sketch, then add written instructions. Include details such as the subject, colors, or style. You can request further changes once the result appears.
Edit an attached-image message on the web
OpenAI’s release notes document a web update dated February 27, 2026 that lets users edit messages containing image attachments, adjust the prompt, or regenerate without starting over. The release note documents this web change; it does not establish that identical controls are available in every app.
What the editor can and cannot do
The editor supports selecting a region, changing the aspect ratio, undoing or redoing selections, canceling and starting over, and saving. On mobile, image controls include Resize and Remove, and you can adjust selection size. OpenAI also says ChatGPT Images can follow instructions to add text, add details within an image, or make the background transparent. Those capabilities are not guarantees of perfect text rendering or exact preservation of everything outside the edit.
Selections are not exact masks
OpenAI warns: “Highlights are not always precise, and edits may extend beyond the area you selected.” A highlighted region should therefore be treated as guidance, not a hard boundary. Name the intended area clearly, inspect the entire result, and ask for a narrower correction if an edit changes more than you wanted.
Find, save, and share your images
Images created with ChatGPT are automatically saved under Images, where you can browse, revisit, and reuse them. You can copy, download or save, and share a generated image. Deleting the conversation where the image was created also deletes it from My images. On mobile, you can share a generated image prompt as a prompt-template link.

Creating or editing an image is separate from uploading one and asking ChatGPT to analyze it. OpenAI’s image-input FAQ lists PNG, JPEG, and non-animated GIF as supported upload formats, with a 20 MB limit per image. Those are image-input constraints, not stated requirements for generating images.
The same FAQ notes that image analysis can be less accurate with ambiguous images, non-Latin or rotated text, graphs with visually varied lines, precise spatial localization, panoramic or fisheye images, and exact object counts. It also says original file names and metadata are not processed and images are resized before analysis. These caveats apply to interpreting uploaded images, not to the image editor’s selection behavior. OpenAI’s capabilities overview separately describes analyzing uploaded images and generating or modifying images using natural language.

OpenAI’s help article says ChatGPT Images is available on all ChatGPT tiers and on web, iOS, and Android. It lists Images with thinking for Plus, Pro, and Business, and says it is coming to Enterprise and Edu. Because that rollout statement can change, check the current help article for availability on your account. The article also says the official DALL·E GPT has been retired from ChatGPT and directs users to ChatGPT Images; this does not establish that all DALL·E products or APIs have been retired.
