To add a poll to an Instagram Story, open the Story composer, choose or capture your photo or video, tap the Sticker icon, select Poll, enter your question and answer choices, position the sticker, and share the Story. The labels and sticker layout can vary slightly by Instagram version, account, device, and country.
How to add a poll to an Instagram Story
The core process is the same on iPhone and Android. Instagram may rearrange stickers or show different options during feature rollouts, so use the labels visible in your app.
- Open Instagram’s Story composer. In the Instagram mobile app, open the Story camera or use the control for creating new content.
- Choose a background. Take a new photo or video, or select one from your phone’s camera roll. Leave a clear area where the poll can sit without covering a face, product, important text, or the main subject.
- Open the sticker tray. On the Story editing screen, tap the Sticker icon at the top. Meta identifies this tray as the place for interactive elements such as the Poll sticker. Meta’s Instagram sticker help page also notes that sticker availability can vary by account and content type.
- Choose Poll. Tap Poll if it appears in the tray. If you do not see it, use the sticker search field and search for Poll. The order of stickers is not fixed, so searching can be quicker than browsing.
- Write the question. Replace the default prompt with one short, specific question. Ask about one decision, preference, or reaction rather than combining several questions into one.
- Edit the answer choices. Replace the default labels with answers that directly match the question. The choices shown can vary by account and rollout; use the response layout displayed in your own Poll sticker rather than assuming every account has the same number of options.
- Format and position the poll. If available, use the color control to change its appearance. Drag the sticker to a readable area. On versions that support it, pinch to resize the sticker.
- Preview the Story. Check that the question and choices are legible, the sticker has enough contrast, and it does not cover essential content. A busy photo may require a different sticker position or a simpler background.
- Publish the Story. Tap the sharing control, such as Your Story or Close Friends. The audience you select determines who can see the Story and vote.
Examples of effective Instagram poll questions
A useful poll can normally be answered with one tap and should relate to the image or video behind it. For example:

Avoid vague prompts such as “What do you think?” unless the answer choices make the intended decision clear. If you need detailed written feedback, a poll is not the best tool.

How to view Instagram poll results
While the Story is active, open your Story and inspect the Poll sticker or the available Story viewer and insight controls. Depending on your account type, app version, and Instagram’s current interface, you may see totals, percentages, and other response information in different places.
Do not assume that every account exposes the same voter-level detail, and do not describe a poll as anonymous unless the current interface for your account explicitly establishes that. The safest expectation is that you can review the response totals and percentages available in your Story’s results view.
What happens when the Story expires?
Instagram Stories normally disappear from the public Story placement after 24 hours. If you want to review the Story later, check whether Stories Archive is enabled. Meta says Stories are saved to Stories Archive when that setting is enabled, although Archive and Highlights are not available for every account. A Story deleted before it expires is not saved to the archive. See Meta’s information about Stories Archive for the relevant account settings.

Review poll results before the 24-hour period ends if the responses matter to you. An expired Story should not be treated as a permanently active poll.
If the Poll sticker is missing
Instagram does not guarantee that every sticker is available to every user, account, country, or content format. Try these steps:
- Update Instagram. Install the latest version from your device’s app store. Meta recommends using the latest app version when certain stickers are unavailable.
- Confirm that you are creating a Story. The sticker may not be offered when you are creating another type of Instagram content.
- Search the sticker tray. Reopen the Story composer, tap Sticker, and search for “Poll” instead of relying on the tray’s visible order.
- Check regional and account availability. Meta says some sticker features may be unavailable in Japan and countries in Europe, and availability is not universal.
- Restart Instagram. Fully close and reopen the app. If that does not help, sign out and back in, or reinstall the app. These are general troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes.
For the latest availability qualifications, consult Meta’s official sticker guidance. If the sticker remains absent after updating and restarting, the limitation may be tied to your account, location, rollout status, or the content format rather than a problem with the Story background.

Poll, Questions, Quiz, or emoji slider?

Use a Poll when you want a quick, discrete choice. Use Questions when you need explanations or suggestions, Quiz when there is a correct answer, and the emoji slider when the response is better represented as a range.
Optional equipment for a steadier Story background
You do not need any extra equipment to add a poll. If you are first recording a hands-free photo or video for the Story, an optional smartphone tripod can help keep the phone stable and leave both hands free. It supports the media-capture step only; the Poll sticker itself is created entirely inside Instagram.
Important note about boosted Stories and ads
An organic Story poll is different from a boosted Story or Story ad. Meta says polling stickers can be used only on ads created without a pre-existing post. Meta also warns that a Story containing a link sticker cannot be boosted in the usual way. If you plan to promote the Story, check the current advertising restrictions before publishing rather than assuming that every organic Story element can be boosted.
For ordinary personal or business Stories, these advertising restrictions do not change the basic process: create the Story, add the Poll sticker, and share it with the intended audience.
