Pinterest no longer offers a separate organic “Idea Pin” option. Since its 2023 creator update, the organic Idea Pin format has been folded into a single Pin creation flow, so you now make an Idea-style multi-media Pin by creating a regular Pin from images, video, or a mix of both. Here is how to do that on desktop and in the mobile app, what the drafting and scheduling limits are, and where the older “Idea ads” product fits.
What “Idea Pin” means today
Pinterest’s August 2023 creator update combined the features of standard Pins and Idea Pins into one Pin format. In that announcement, Anthony Di Feo wrote that the company was “bringing the best of standard Pins and Idea Pins together in a single powerhouse Pin format.” Pinterest’s current Help pages, checked in early October 2026, tell people to create a Pin rather than choose an Idea Pin option.
The practical result is that the menu you see is the one to use. A Pin built from images, video, or a combination of both is the successor to the old Idea Pin. The name “Idea Pin” survives mainly in search queries and older tutorials, so it is worth knowing the terminology before you start looking for a button that no longer exists.

Create a Pin on desktop
Desktop is the simplest route for a single image or a single video. Pinterest’s Help instructions describe the following sequence. Menu labels can differ slightly depending on your account type, device, and rollout, so follow whatever wording appears on your screen.

- Sign in to Pinterest and select Create. Business accounts may instead see a menu path that leads to Create Pin.
- Upload an image or a video file.
- Complete the fields shown for that media: title, description, an optional destination link, a board, and up to 10 related topics. Video Pins may also offer product tags.
- If you want to change the asset, use the editing tools. These include adding text and changing the aspect ratio. When you are satisfied, finish editing and publish.
Selecting several images on desktop does not produce one multi-image Pin. Each image becomes its own Pin. If you want several images and videos to appear together in a single video Pin, use the mobile app instead.
Create a Pin in the mobile app
The app is the route for multi-asset, story-style Pins. Its controls can vary between app versions, so treat the labels below as the current pattern rather than fixed text.

- Open the Pinterest app and tap the create control at the bottom of the screen, then choose Pin.
- Select existing photos or videos from your device, or record a video inside the app. When you select several images and videos, the app can combine them into a single video Pin.
- Edit the media with the available tools. For a video, choose a cover frame if the option is offered.
- Add the title, a link if you have one, product tags where relevant, a description, a board, and related topics. Then tap Create.
Choose the right media route
The decision you actually face is which media route fits your material, not which Pin type to pick from a menu. The table below summarises the current options.

Drafts and scheduling limits
Drafts and scheduling are optional, but two limits affect how you plan a batch of Pins.

- Draft expiry: Pinterest says drafts expire 30 days after they were first saved.
- Cross-device editing: a draft cannot be edited across different devices, so finish a draft on the device where you started it.
- Draft volume on desktop: you can save up to 50 drafts and publish several of them together.
- Scheduling for business accounts: Pinterest Business Help says standard Pins can be scheduled up to 30 days ahead, with up to 10 future Pins scheduled at one time.
Business accounts, product tags, and Idea ads
Basic Pin creation does not require a business account. Analytics and Business Hub are business-account features, and the scheduling limits above apply to business accounts. Business accounts can also tag products in an organic Pin, either by searching existing product Pins or by pasting a retailer product-page link.
Do not confuse this with Idea ads. Idea ads are a paid advertising format described in Pinterest’s business advertising documentation. Pinterest’s ad specifications describe an Idea ad as one Pin containing multiple videos, images, lists, and custom text. It is a campaign product that you buy and manage as an ad, not a way to publish an organic Pin.

Common points of confusion
- Looking for “Create Idea Pin”: the organic button has been replaced by the unified Pin flow. Use Create and upload media.
- Multi-image upload on desktop produces several Pins: to combine media into one video Pin, use the mobile app.
- A draft has disappeared: drafts expire after 30 days and cannot be picked up on another device, so save and finish them on the same device.
- Idea ads missing from your organic options: Idea ads are a paid ad format and are managed separately from organic Pin creation.
Pinterest updates its interface and limits without much notice. If a label in these steps does not match your screen, the Pinterest Help center is the authoritative reference for your account.
