PhotoCollage is a free, open-source Ubuntu app that automatically arranges your photos into a poster-style collage. Install the photocollage package, add your images, refine the generated layout, and export the result as a high-resolution image.
Install PhotoCollage on Ubuntu
On Ubuntu releases that provide the package, install PhotoCollage from the Ubuntu repository. The package is in the Universe repository; Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble) lists version 1.4.5-0.2. Apt installs its required Python 3, GTK 3, Cairo, and Pillow dependencies automatically.
- Open Terminal.
- Refresh package metadata if needed:
sudo apt update. - Install PhotoCollage:
sudo apt-get install photocollage.
If apt cannot find the package on your Ubuntu installation, the project documents pip as an alternative installation route: sudo pip3 install photocollage. This is a separate package-management path from apt; prefer the Ubuntu package when it is available.

Launch the app
Open PhotoCollage from your desktop application menu. If it does not appear there, open Terminal and run:

Create and refine your collage
- Add the photographs you want in the collage.
- Let PhotoCollage generate an initial layout. It uses the available poster area while trying to keep the photos large.
- Generate new random layouts until you find a composition you like.
- Set the poster dimensions and adjust the border color or width.
- Swap individual photos in the grid if an image is in the wrong position.
- Review the entire canvas at the intended aspect ratio before exporting.
Export a high-resolution image
Save the finished design as an image. PhotoCollage documents high-resolution output and says it can handle large collections, including more than 100 photos; that figure is a project feature description, not a dated or independently measured limit. After saving, open the exported file in an image viewer or editor and check its dimensions. You can then share it digitally or send it to a printer or photo-printing service if you want a physical poster.
