You can build and export a narrated video presentation on your own machine with OpenVid, a self-hosted, open-source video presentation editor. Clone the repository, install the Python and Node dependencies, start the local server, copy one of the bundled business examples, adjust the scenes and narration, and render an MP4. The bundled examples can be opened, edited, and rendered without an AI provider key. Provider accounts only matter if you choose to generate new assets with AI.
What runs locally and what does not
OpenVid uses HyperFrames to render scenes on your machine. The project’s README states that “No Palette account or provider key is needed to open the examples, edit, or render existing assets.” That sentence covers the full basic workflow: the six included examples, their narration and music, their photography, and the rendering step.
Optional generation is a separate layer. If you connect a provider account to create images, scene plans, speech, or video, the work runs through that provider, and provider billing applies. A local render therefore does not mean that every asset in your presentation was produced offline or at no cost. It means the editing and export pipeline does not depend on a provider.

Prerequisites
The README’s current install baseline is:
- Python 3.13 or newer, used for the project’s virtual environment and requirements.
- Node.js 22 or newer, used for
npm ciand the development server. - FFmpeg and ffprobe, which handle media processing and inspection.
- A Chromium installation supported by HyperFrames. The
npx hyperframes browser ensurestep in the startup sequence checks for it. - LibreOffice, which is optional and only needed if you import PowerPoint files.
These version floors are taken from the repository as inspected in 2026. Dependency requirements change between releases, so read the README in the cloned repository before you install and follow it if it differs from this guide.

Install and start the local server
Run the following steps in a terminal from the directory where you want the project to live.
- Clone the repository:
git clone https://github.com/hanishkeloth/OpenVid.git - Enter the project folder:
cd OpenVid - Create a Python virtual environment:
python3 -m venv .venv - Install the Python requirements:
.venv/bin/pip install -r requirements.txt - Install the Node dependencies from the lock file:
npm ci - Make sure the browser HyperFrames needs is available:
npx hyperframes browser ensure - Start the development server:
npm run dev - Open
http://127.0.0.1:7795/vidsin your browser.
The address uses 127.0.0.1, so the editor is reachable only from the machine running it. Expect a working workspace after the page loads. If the page does not respond, check the terminal where npm run dev is running for errors before reinstalling anything.
Why the browser profile matters
OpenVid stores a private workspace cookie in the browser profile you use. That cookie identifies your workspace. Opening the same address in a different browser profile creates a separate workspace, with its own projects as you see them in that profile. If your projects seem to have disappeared, check that you are using the profile you started with before assuming data was lost.

The repository includes six example presentations: press announcement, product launch, quarterly results, sales deck, customer story, and team strategy. Each has four scenes, narration, music, photography, and a completed 1080p video export. Opening one of these examples is the fastest way to see how a finished narrated presentation is structured before you build your own.

The maintainer’s tutorial demonstrates copying the press-announcement example and editing the copy, which keeps the original intact. The example businesses and metrics are fictional and illustrative. Replace the names, figures, and claims with your own content before you use the presentation for a real audience.
Edit the scenes
OpenVid edits a presentation as a set of scenes on a timeline. You can work with landscape, portrait, and square documents. Each scene can contain text, shape, image, video, and audio layers. Scene-level tools include split, reorder, and duplicate. Layer-level tools include trims, speed, volume, fades, animations, and transitions. Undo and redo, version history, comments, trash, and templates are also available.
The maintainer’s tutorial recommends making one small visual change first, such as a headline or a color, and rendering the result to confirm your workflow works before making larger edits. Keeping the source as editable scenes is what makes revisions cheap. The maintainer puts it this way: “A video presentation is easier to revise when the source is still a set of editable scenes.”

Replacing a narration clip does not change the on-screen copy, and changing a headline or number does not update an existing recording. If you change a figure in a scene, re-record or regenerate the matching line. Then align the audio with the scene:
- Check the scene duration against the length of the new narration.
- Set the narration start so it begins where the scene’s visuals appear.
- Remove or mute the old clip so two voice tracks do not play over each other.
- Listen to the overlap zones between scenes, where a clip may run long.
- Leave a short pause after the final sentence so the scene does not cut off the voice.
Render and export the MP4
Use the following sequence for a first render. The maintainer’s beginner example uses these settings.
- Wait until the editor reports that your changes are saved.
- Select Download.
- Choose MP4 as the format, 720p as the resolution, and 30 fps as the frame rate.
- Start the render and follow its progress in Activity.
- When the job completes, open the exported file and watch it through the final scene.
The local export options are MP4, WebM, or GIF, at 720p or 1080p, and at 24, 30, or 60 fps. Higher resolutions and frame rates take longer to render and produce larger files.

What to check in the exported file
A finished job confirms only that rendering completed. It does not confirm that the result is ready to share. Check these points on the video itself:

- Headlines and figures are legible at the exported resolution.
- Each narration line starts and ends inside its scene.
- Background music sits under the voice rather than competing with it.
- The last scene holds long enough for the closing line and does not cut off.
- Any placeholder example content from the sample business has been replaced.
Move the project and its media
An exported project JSON file does not contain the media files. Images, video clips, audio files, and the bundled sample assets stay outside the JSON, so a project moved without them will be incomplete. Copy the media folders with the project, and keep the sample assets’ separate terms in mind if you reuse them outside OpenVid.

The repository is explicit about what OpenVid does not do. It has no Google Drive integration, no Google Workspace accounts, and no live collaboration across workspaces. It does not claim complete feature parity with Google Vids. Imports behave differently by format: PDF and PowerPoint pages come in as images, and DOCX files import as text.
Because the server runs on your machine and stores workspace and project data locally, the README advises against exposing it publicly without access control. Keep the address on 127.0.0.1 unless you add authentication and a network setup you control.
The repository’s Docker section says to allow at least 2 CPUs and 4 GB of RAM for rendering, and larger videos need more memory and disk. Treat this as the project’s own Docker guidance, not as a tested minimum for every workload. Longer presentations, higher resolutions, and more media will need more resources.

Supported operations differ by provider, and model access, output schemas, reference-image support, and billing can vary. A custom endpoint has to implement the OpenAI routes the project lists. Paid jobs are submitted once and are not retried automatically after a failure or interruption. If a generation job fails, check the provider dashboard for its status and any charge before you retry it manually, so you do not pay twice for the same output.
Where OpenVid fits
OpenVid suits people who want to keep a presentation as an editable source they control, render it on their own hardware, and decide case by case whether to use paid generation. If your priority is a hosted editor with shared online collaboration, Google Drive storage, or a single-click AI video pipeline, OpenVid’s self-hosted model and the limits listed above will not match that expectation.
