Create a montage in Premiere Pro by placing your footage in a sequence, then trimming and arranging the clips on the timeline to build a clear progression. Adjacent clips play as a cut by default, so transitions and music are optional. Review your timing in the Program Monitor as you edit.
1. Create a sequence for the montage
A Premiere Pro project can contain multiple sequences, each with its own settings. Choose settings that suit the intended delivery format; the right resolution and frame rate depend on where the finished video will be used.
- In the Project panel, select the footage you want to use.
- Drag a clip to the New Item icon to create a sequence based on that clip.
- To use an existing sequence instead, drag clips from the Project panel to its timeline.
Adobe’s sequence guidance describes creating a sequence by dragging a clip from the Project panel to the New Item icon.
2. Add and arrange your footage
Bring clips into the Timeline panel from the Project panel or Source Monitor. In the Source Monitor, you can also use Insert or Overwrite to add a selected portion of footage to the sequence. Adobe explains these options in its Source Monitor and Program Monitor guide.

Build a progression
Place clips in an order that communicates the sequence of moments you want viewers to see. The timeline is where you shape that progression: drag clips to reposition them, drag a clip’s edge to trim it, or use the Razor tool to cut a clip into sections.
- V: Selection tool
- C: Razor tool
- B: Ripple Edit tool
- Space: Play or pause
These timeline edits are non-destructive: they do not alter the original media, which remains available in the Project panel. See Adobe’s guide to playing and editing video.

3. Refine the timing and pacing
Play the sequence and adjust the in and out points of clips until the moments flow at the pace you want. If the boundary between two shots needs to move but you want the combined duration of those clips to stay the same, use a rolling edit. It shifts the cut between the two clips without changing their total duration. Adobe describes this and other timeline tools in its clip-trimming guide.

When two clips touch on the timeline, Premiere Pro plays a cut between them by default. A cut suits a direct change of shot; a transition can make a change feel more gradual, but it also uses frames from the clips. Adobe recommends trimming clips before applying a transition so more frames are available for it.

You can apply a transition at a cut or at the beginning or end of a clip. Add one when it supports the intended pacing rather than treating it as a requirement for every shot change. Adobe’s transition guide covers placement and use.
5. Add music and smooth audio edits
Place music on an audio track if it supports the montage. For a smoother handoff between adjacent audio clips, first make sure the clips are next to each other and trimmed. Then use their visible fade handles to create a custom crossfade. Adobe’s audio transition instructions explain this method.
