You can build a film-poster gallery by capturing each poster’s source webpage at the same browser size, saving each capture with its page URL and title, and arranging the images in a grid that links back to those pages. The important caveat: capturing a poster does not give you permission to republish it. For a public gallery, check the image’s licence or obtain permission before displaying the screenshot.
Plan the gallery and check image rights first
Decide whether you need a private reference gallery or a public page. For a public or commercial gallery, identify who owns or licenses each poster and confirm that the licence permits your intended use. In the UK, government guidance says most images found online are likely protected; reuse generally requires permission, a licence, an applicable exception, or expired copyright. The UK guidance distinguishes linking from reusing an image: a simple link to a page where the copyright owner has publicly posted an image is usually not restricted by copyright. In the United States, fair use is assessed case by case using four statutory factors: purpose and character, nature of the work, amount used, and market effect. There is no automatic safe percentage. The U.S. Copyright Office says, “There are no legal rules permitting the use of a specific number of words, a certain number of musical notes, or percentage of a work,” and says only a federal court can ultimately determine whether a particular use is fair. Copyright owners generally hold exclusive rights that include reproduction and public display, subject to statutory limitations. U.S. Copyright Act, Chapter 1. Crediting the source is useful for attribution and later rights checks, but attribution alone does not replace permission where permission is required. A site’s permission policy applies only within its stated scope: for example, W3C permits screenshots of its own site under conditions that prohibit implying W3C sponsorship or endorsement, and warns against using screenshots to circumvent its logo policy. Choose a capture method
Capture a browser tab or window yourself
The Screen Capture API lets a user select a browser tab, window, or monitor. It is useful when you want to choose the exact visible surface manually. Content that is hidden or obscured may also be obscured in the capture. See MDN’s Screen Capture API documentation. The capture API is a browser capability, not a bulk URL-to-image service; expect to select a surface and capture each page through your own workflow.
Use a URL-based screenshot service
A URL-based service takes a page address and returns an image, which can be easier to automate across a list of pages. ScreenshotAPI.to documents an endpoint that accepts a URL or raw HTML and can return PNG, JPEG, or WebP image data. For this workflow, compare options by user control and privacy, whether you can automate multiple pages, available output formats, and the service’s terms. Pricing, reliability, and service limits are not established here, so verify them directly with a provider before building around them.
Build a repeatable capture workflow
- Make a source list. Record each film title, the page URL, and—if available—the image owner or licence details. Prefer pages that clearly identify the image source and rights.
- Standardize the capture. Use the same browser size, zoom level, and capture method for every page. This makes the resulting thumbnails easier to compare and the gallery more orderly.
- Capture the page. With manual capture, select the intended tab or window and ensure the poster is visible at the chosen size. With a URL service, submit the page URL and select a supported image format and dimensions appropriate to your gallery.
- Save descriptive files. Use a consistent name, such as
film-title-year.webp, rather than an anonymous sequence. Keep a separate record mapping every saved image to the source URL, page title, capture date, and rights status. - Review every image. Check for obstructing overlays, missing poster content, unexpected page sections, or a capture that differs materially from the page you intended to document. Replace unsuitable captures instead of quietly publishing them.
- Arrange and link the gallery. Display captures in a grid or another layout that suits the collection. Link each item to its source page. Linking to the source is not the same as having permission to reproduce the poster in your gallery.
- Publish only when authorized. Before making the gallery public, confirm that your permission or licence covers the poster image and your planned display. Keep the rights record with the source information so you can respond to later questions or takedown requests.

Keep the gallery consistent and traceable
- Keep the original source URL and page title alongside every capture, not only in a browser history.
- Use consistent dimensions and filenames so images remain organized as the collection grows.
- Preserve licence or permission records separately from attribution details; naming a source does not establish permission.
- Link gallery entries to the source page when appropriate, while treating the screenshot file itself as a separate reproduction that needs its own rights basis.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does taking a screenshot make a film poster free to use?
