You can make a meaningful ofrenda at home with a stable surface, a photo or other reminder of the person you are honoring, and a few offerings chosen for their personal significance. There is no universal checklist: traditions vary by family and region, and a small, flat display is a valid place to begin.
How do I make a simple ofrenda at home?
- Choose whom to honor. Select a photograph, drawing, or meaningful object that represents the person. Palm Springs Art Museum recommends starting with the person before gathering altar elements. Palm Springs Art Museum’s ofrenda activity offers a practical guide.
- Pick a stable surface. A table, bookshelf, or nightstand can work. Add a cloth or table covering if you wish.
- Place the photograph or representation where it can be seen. Arrange selected offerings around it; you do not need to include every commonly mentioned element.
- Add personal offerings. Water and a favorite food or drink are meaningful possibilities. Other commonly described offerings include bread, salt, flowers, candles, and incense.
- Decorate in a way that suits your space and practice. Flowers and papel picado are common visual elements, but decoration is optional. Fresh flowers or handmade paper marigolds are both possibilities.
- Choose whether to add levels. A flat display is fine. Some traditions use two, three, or seven levels; books or boxes can create height if that is appropriate for your display.
- Make time to remember. After arranging the objects, pause to recall memories of the person and the family traditions connected to them.
The steps above adapt the Palm Springs Art Museum’s activity, which explicitly allows makers to select only some elements. Read the activity.

Do I need levels, fresh marigolds, or special supplies?
No. The space and materials you have can shape the display. If you want flowers but fresh ones are impractical, The Mexican Museum describes making marigolds from tissue paper. Its craft activity lists tissue paper, pipe cleaners, and scissors; those are optional craft materials, not requirements for an ofrenda. See The Mexican Museum’s overview and flower activity.
Similarly, use a flat surface if building levels does not suit your home. If you include candles or incense, consider whether they are suitable for your household and arrange them safely; neither is necessary to make a personal display.

When should I set up and take down an ofrenda?
Día de los Muertos is commonly observed around November 1 and 2, but sources describe different local schedules. The Mexican Museum identifies those dates as common observances; Mexico City’s tourism authority notes that families may prepare several days ahead. The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum describes one regional practice of setting up on October 30 or 31 and taking the altar down November 2. These accounts do not establish a single schedule for everyone. Follow your family’s or community’s custom when you know it.
