To run a music playlist as a 24/7 YouTube livestream, you loop the playlist in an encoder on your own computer and send that feed to YouTube’s live ingest, using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The encoder has to keep running for the whole time, so the computer must stay on and connected. The alternative is to have a cloud service hold that connection for you, which is covered at the end of this guide.

Confirm your music rights before you build anything. A livestream can be interrupted even when the music is licensed, and that point shapes the whole setup.

Before you start: channel and rights

Enable livestreaming on the channel

If the channel has never streamed live, enable live streaming first. YouTube’s Help documentation says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so turn it on at least a day before your intended launch.

“You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”

In practice, that means:

  • Consumer subscriptions do not cover a broadcast. Being able to play a song in a streaming app is not the same as holding the rights to broadcast it to an audience, 24 hours a day.
  • YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may replace your stream with a placeholder image. If the content stays in the stream, the broadcast can be temporarily interrupted or terminated.
  • A license can still fail on the allowlist. YouTube says a stream can be interrupted even when you hold a license if your channel is not on the content owner’s Content ID allowlist. Where a rights holder has licensed you, ask them to add your channel to that allowlist.
  • Creator Music is not a livestream license. YouTube’s usage guidance limits Creator Music tracks to long-form videos, not live streams or Shorts. Leave those tracks out of any playlist you broadcast.

Use music you created or fully control, or licensed music whose terms you have checked for livestream use, the territories you broadcast to, the rights types involved, and allowlisting. This guide does not recommend a music licensing provider, because the terms that matter for continuous livestreams differ by provider and need checking directly with each one.

What you need

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled.
  • A computer that can stay on for days, on a wired connection where possible.
  • Upload bandwidth comfortably above your stream bitrate (see the settings table below).
  • Your playlist as audio files (MP3 or AAC in an M4A or MP4 container) and one picture for the background.
  • An encoder. YouTube supports both streaming software and standalone hardware encoders. This guide uses OBS Studio, with an ffmpeg alternative. A dedicated hardware unit is optional.

Step 1: Create the stream in YouTube Studio

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio. Select Create (the camera icon), then Go live.
  2. In Live Control Room, create a new stream or select an existing one.
  3. Copy the server URL and the stream key shown for that stream.
  4. Open the stream settings and turn on the option to reuse stream settings, so that future sessions use the same key rather than a new one each time. The stream settings also contain the key reset option and the auto-start and auto-stop options. Auto-start and auto-stop help manage sessions, but they do not guarantee uninterrupted playback.

Treat the stream key like a password. Anyone who has it can send a feed to your channel. If it leaks, the channel owner or a manager can reset it in the stream settings, and then the encoder must be updated with the new key before it will connect again.

Step 2: Prepare the playlist and the picture

Order and format the tracks

Put the tracks in the exact order you want, and save them as audio files with a consistent format. Mixing sample rates or codecs inside one playlist can cause the concatenation step in ffmpeg to fail, so convert everything to the same format before you start, and keep the file names simple (no quotation marks or special characters).

Choose the background picture

Use a single still image at 1920×1080 (or 1280×720 if your upload is limited), such as cover art or a channel graphic. A static picture compresses well, which is why it suits a stream that has to run for days.

Plan the loop length

The playlist repeats from the first track after the last one ends. Total length matters less than the rights question: whatever runs in the loop must be cleared for the entire loop.

Step 3: Configure OBS Studio

  1. Connect the stream. Go to Settings > Stream. Set Service to YouTube – RTMPS (or YouTube – RTMP in older OBS versions). Paste the stream key from Studio into Stream Key. If the server dropdown does not match the server URL YouTube shows you, choose the custom option and paste the server URL.
  2. Set the output. Go to Settings > Output. Set Output Mode to Advanced. On the Streaming tab, choose the encoder, rate control (CBR), bitrate, keyframe interval, and preset as in the table below.
  3. Set the canvas. Go to Settings > Video. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080, and Common FPS Values to 30.
  4. Set the audio. Go to Settings > Audio and set the sample rate to 48 kHz. Keep the output audio at stereo.
  5. Turn on reconnect. Go to Settings > Advanced and enable the automatic reconnect options in the network section, so OBS retries after a brief network drop.
  6. Add the picture. In the Sources panel, select + and add an Image source. Choose your background picture and size it to fill the canvas.
  7. Add the playlist. Select + again and add a Media Source. Load your audio files as the playlist, tick Loop, and tick Restart playback when source becomes active. Because the files are audio-only, the Media Source supplies sound and the Image source underneath supplies the picture. If your OBS version’s Media Source does not accept a playlist, use the VLC Video Source with a playlist instead.
  8. Check the mixer. Confirm the Media Source meter moves when the playlist plays. If you hear it through your speakers, set its monitoring to off in the Advanced Audio Properties window, so the track is only sent to the stream.

Recommended encoder settings

These are starting points for a static-image music stream, not measured results for every connection. YouTube’s encoder recommendations change over time, so check YouTube’s current encoder-settings Help page before you lock in values.

Setting Starting value Why it matters
Resolution 1920×1080 (or 1280×720) A still picture gains little from extra detail, and 720p needs less upload.
Frame rate 30 fps A static image does not benefit from 60 fps, and 30 fps uses less bandwidth and CPU.
Video bitrate (CBR) About 4,500 kbps at 1080p30, or about 2,500 kbps at 720p30 Constant bitrate keeps the upload steady. Lower it if your upload is unreliable.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds Frequent keyframes help YouTube’s ingest recover after a glitch. At 30 fps this is a keyframe every 60 frames.
Encoder x264 with preset veryfast, or a GPU encoder if your machine has one x264 uses the CPU; a GPU encoder frees the CPU for other work.
Audio AAC, 128 kbps, stereo, 48 kHz Adequate for a music stream and keeps the total upload small.
Upload headroom Upload speed at least about 1.5 times the total bitrate (video plus audio) A rule of thumb. Less headroom makes drops more likely during peak network use.

Alternative: send the loop with ffmpeg

If you prefer a command-line setup, ffmpeg can loop a playlist and a picture without a graphical interface. Create a text file named playlist.txt with one line per track, in this form:

file 'track01.m4a'
file 'track02.m4a'
file 'track03.m4a'

Then run the following, replacing the placeholders with the server URL and stream key from Studio. Join the two with a slash, with no spaces:

  • 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
  • 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
ffmpeg -re -loop 1 -framerate 2 -i cover.jpg -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -map 0:v -map 1:a -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -s 1920x1080 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 48000 -f flv <server-url>/<stream-key>

The -re flag paces the output in real time, which a live stream needs. -stream_loop -1 repeats the playlist indefinitely. The -g 60 value gives a keyframe every two seconds at 30 fps. Run the command in a terminal that stays open, and do not close it while the stream is running. Test the command for a few minutes before you leave it unattended.

Start the stream and confirm it is live

  1. In OBS, select Start Streaming. For ffmpeg, the command above starts the feed as soon as it runs.
  2. In YouTube Studio, check that the stream preview shows your picture and that audio is playing.
  3. Complete the go-live step in Live Control Room when it appears.
  4. Listen for a minute or two to confirm the playlist starts over at the first track after the last one ends.

To end the broadcast, stop the encoder feed first (Stop Streaming in OBS, or Ctrl+C in the ffmpeg terminal), then end the stream in Studio.

Running it around the clock

Keep the computer awake

On Windows, go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep and set When plugged in, put device to sleep to Never. On macOS, turn off automatic sleep in the Energy or Battery settings for the power source you use. Sleep is the most common reason a home-hosted 24/7 stream stops.

Control updates and restarts

Operating system updates that restart the machine end the stream. Set update hours outside the broadcast window, or pause updates while the stream is running. Check that OBS and the operating system do not restart on their own schedule.

Protect the connection

Use a wired connection. Wi-Fi drops can interrupt the feed even when the computer and encoder are healthy, and a wired link keeps upload speed predictable.

Plan for the archive

YouTube’s encoder documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not state that a longer stream, such as a 24-hour broadcast, is archived as a single video. Treat the live broadcast and the archive as separate things, and do not rely on one long archived video for a 24-hour run.

What it costs to run at home

  • Electricity: the computer runs continuously, so its power draw is a running cost for every day of broadcast.
  • Internet: the upload is continuous. Check that your plan’s upload speed and data allowance support the bitrate you chose.
  • Hardware wear: continuous operation stresses fans, drives and power supplies, so plan for maintenance and a spare machine if the stream matters.
  • Your time: someone has to watch for updates, failed connections and playlist changes.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Cannot go live in Studio Live streaming is not yet enabled on the channel Enable it and wait up to 24 hours for first-time enablement to complete.
No preview appears in Studio Wrong server URL or stream key, or the encoder is not running Copy the server URL and key again, confirm the encoder shows as streaming, and check the key was not reset.
Encoder cannot connect A firewall or network blocks the outbound connection to YouTube’s ingest Allow OBS or ffmpeg through the firewall, and test from another network to confirm.
Stream replaced by a placeholder or interrupted A third-party track was matched, and the channel is not on the rights holder’s allowlist Remove the track, or have the rights holder add your channel to its allowlist before you broadcast it again.
Stream stops after a few hours Sleep mode, a forced update restart, or upload speed too low for the bitrate Disable sleep, schedule updates, and lower the bitrate or switch to a wired connection.
Choppy video or dropped frames in OBS The CPU cannot keep up with x264 at this setting Use a faster preset, lower the resolution, or switch to a GPU encoder.
Playlist stops after the last track Loop is not enabled, or the ffmpeg command lacks the loop flag Tick Loop on the Media Source, or confirm -stream_loop -1 is in the command.
Track is silent or out of sync The Media Source is muted in the mixer, or the audio uses a mismatched sample rate Unmute the source, set audio to 48 kHz, and re-export tracks in one format.
No single archive for a 24-hour session YouTube’s archiving is documented for streams under 12 hours Plan around this limit. Do not promise a single archive for a continuous run.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a computer and home connection to stay on for days, StreamNeo can keep the same YouTube channel live from its cloud. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera.

  1. Upload a recording, or build a playlist from your uploads.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live. StreamNeo loops the content from the cloud, so no computer, OBS or home connection has to stay on.

The concrete reasons to consider it:

  • Nothing has to stay on at home. The stream keeps going with your computer off.
  • Any quality up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. Content streams as you uploaded it, with no re-encode and no quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card (one free day per account).
  • Plans run from a day to a year and can be cancelled at any time. The Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. Cards work worldwide, and UPI works in India.

StreamNeo is a fit for the same task this guide covers, but the rights requirements above still apply to whatever you upload. Start your free day at app.streamneo.com/register, with no card needed.
