To counter a reworked Overwatch hero, first identify what changed, then adjust your position and coordinate around the hero’s engagement cues, cooldowns, and commitment windows. There is no reliable universal counter: the right response depends on the current patch, game mode, the target hero’s ability to respond, and whether your team can support the matchup.
Start with what the rework actually changed
Do not assume a rework simply makes a hero better at the same job. It may change an ability, the hero’s role, how they enter a fight, or how they escape. Check the current official patch notes and the in-game ability description for the version you are playing. Separate permanent live changes from limited-time experiments: Blizzard described its Reign of Talon changes as experiments and “more of a conversation than a balance patch,” with an announced June 30–July 13 window (Blizzard’s Overwatch news).
Then ask what the hero needs to start a successful engagement. Depending on the specific kit, that might be a sightline, close range, a flank route, an exposed target, or a combination of available abilities. Those are questions to answer for the hero in front of you, not assumptions that apply to every rework.

Watch for the actions that tell you the hero is committing: an ability used to enter, a route that brings them into range, or a cooldown combination that leaves them exposed afterward. Blizzard’s Sombra design discussion describes a goal of making hero impact clear enough to inform enemy counterplay and giving opponents more opportunities to react. It notes that changes to Translocator and Stealth were intended to enable quicker combat maneuvers while making responses more possible (Blizzard’s Sombra rework discussion). That is a useful way to think about cues and openings, not evidence of Sombra’s current abilities or best counters.

Use cover, distance, alternate angles, and teammate proximity to reduce the value of the hero’s preferred engagement. Change position before swapping heroes if your current pick can deny the route or survive the key interaction. Do not automatically group tightly: spacing that helps against one ability can make the team more vulnerable to another threat.
Choose a response by the interaction, not by a counter chart
When comparing possible picks, evaluate what each can do during the engagement and immediately afterward. A useful checklist is:

- Stop or survive: Can the pick interrupt the key action, or withstand it long enough for help to arrive?
- Range and cover: Can it operate from a safer distance or use cover without surrendering too much influence?
- Commitment and escape: If it uses mobility or a defensive ability to respond, can it get out or stay useful afterward?
- Timing and availability: Does its relevant ability line up with the reworked hero’s opening, or will it be unavailable when needed?
- Team protection: Does the pick protect the teammate being threatened, or merely improve one player’s duel?
These are comparison questions, not an official Blizzard ranking. Blizzard has explicitly noted that Roadhog hook effectiveness depends on specific hero matchups and on how the target responds, illustrating why a named interaction cannot be treated as an automatic win (January 24, 2023 Overwatch patch notes).
Coordinate around commitment and vulnerability
Before a fight, agree on the ability or route to watch, who can peel for the threatened teammate, and when others can follow up. Avoid leaving one player to solve the matchup alone if the answer depends on several teammates reacting together. For tanks in particular, track whether the team still has room to disengage or whether someone can peel; Blizzard describes making space, initiating engagements, and peeling for allies among tank objectives (Blizzard’s Doomfist and Orisa overhaul article).

After the fight, check whether the response worked because of the pick itself or because the team supported its range and timing. A theoretically useful hero choice can fail if teammates cannot follow up or if the target is left without protection. Blizzard’s Orisa article describes her new ultimate as creating an opportunity for rapid team coordination; treat that as an illustration of team timing, not a current ability recommendation.
Use historical examples carefully
Developer explanations can help you form questions about a rework, but older descriptions should not be read as present-day matchup advice:

- Sombra: Blizzard’s rework discussion is an example of considering how changes to escape and stealth affect enemy opportunities to react. It does not establish her current kit or counters.
- Doomfist and Orisa: Blizzard’s beta-era overhaul described Doomfist moving from Damage to Tank and changes to Orisa’s forward-engagement tools. It shows why a rework can change role and positioning together; the historic ability details are not current recommendations.
- Roadhog: Blizzard’s January 24, 2023 patch notes support conditional matchup thinking about hook and the target’s response, not a current judgment about Roadhog’s strength.
- Sombra counter-swapping: October 2024 notes recorded Sombra changes and explained that a scoreboard change added friction to counter-swapping. This is dated context, not a current rule about the hero or the game.
Verify advice against the live patch and mode
Because the question does not name a hero, patch, mode, or rank, a current matchup chart would overstate what can be known. For any hero-specific advice, verify the live patch notes and in-game description, then state the season or patch and keep the claim within that version. This matters especially when a change was announced as a temporary experiment rather than a live balance update. Historical developer commentary can explain design intent, but it cannot substitute for checking the current game.
