If you mean counting cysteine in foods, start with a food-composition database or a nutrition tracker that lists amino acids. Check the specific food entry: neither a database nor an app guarantees that every item has a cysteine value. A kitchen scale can help you measure the portion you log, but it cannot measure cysteine.
Where to look up cysteine in food
USDA FoodData Central
USDA FoodData Central is a food-composition database with several types of records, and coverage and update schedules vary by type. USDA says Foundation Foods are updated twice a year, branded food data monthly, and the Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS) every two years. SR Legacy received its final update in 2018. These schedules describe database updates; they do not establish how complete or accurate cysteine values are for a particular food.
Search for the food, select the record that best matches it, and inspect its nutrient information for cysteine. The entry’s data type and whether it represents a generic food or a branded product matter when choosing a match.
USDA’s FoodData Central help page distinguishes the views available on desktop and mobile: desktop users can inspect detailed nutrient and food-component values and underlying metadata, while mobile results are more limited. If you cannot find cysteine in a mobile view, check the detailed desktop record before concluding it is absent.

Cronometer
Cronometer says its tracker includes amino-acid tracking. Its database information names more than 10 sources, including NCCDB, its own food-composition database, USDA SR28, the Canadian Nutrient File, and USDA FoodData Central branded foods. These are vendor descriptions, not an independent assessment of coverage. Check the individual food entry to see whether it actually lists cysteine.
How to compare food entries
- Match the food: Choose a generic or branded record that corresponds to what you ate.
- Check provenance: Look at the record’s source or metadata where available; databases combine different data types and sources.
- Confirm cysteine is listed: Do not assume that an amino-acid tracker or food database supplies a value for every item.
- Set the portion: Make sure the serving size in the record matches the amount you intend to count.
The available information does not establish that USDA FoodData Central or Cronometer has more complete cysteine coverage than the other. Compare the specific entries you need rather than relying on a blanket ranking.

What a kitchen scale can—and cannot—do
A digital kitchen scale can help you weigh a food portion before entering it in a database or tracker. That is an accessory step for portion measurement, not a way to measure cysteine; the nutrient estimate still depends on the food record and its listed composition.
Cysteine versus cystine
Cysteine and cystine are related but distinct forms discussed in research on cysteine metabolism. Do not treat a cystine value as interchangeable with cysteine unless the source explains how the value is reported. Dietary counting also does not, by itself, establish a need for supplementation.
