For a still WebP image, choose the destination format first, then use the matching converter: run dwebp input.webp -o output.png for a lossless PNG, use ImageMagick with magick input.webp output.jpg or magick input.webp output.png, or use Pillow when conversion belongs in a Python program. PNG preserves transparency; JPEG is usually smaller for photographs but removes transparency and adds another lossy encoding step.
Before converting, check whether you need to convert at all. Current Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge and Opera browsers can display WebP natively. Conversion is mainly useful for older software, publishing systems that reject WebP, print workflows, or applications that require a specific format.

Choose the right output format
| Destination | Best use | Transparency | Quality behavior | Animation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PNG | Logos, screenshots, line art, and images with transparent backgrounds | Preserved when the source has an alpha channel | Lossless output; usually larger than JPEG for photographs | One frame with ordinary still-image tools |
| JPEG | Photographs and broad legacy compatibility | Not supported | Lossy; conversion can add a further generation of compression | Not supported |
| PAM, PPM or PGM | Technical image-processing pipelines | Depends on the selected raster representation | Uncompressed or pipeline-oriented formats | Not supported as an animation workflow |
Keep the original WebP. A conversion changes encoding and may discard metadata, color information or animation frames. Inspect the converted file at its intended display size before replacing the source.

The WebP project includes libwebp and its command-line programs. dwebp decompresses a WebP file into PNG, PAM, PPM or PGM. It is a direct, predictable choice when you need a still PNG.

WebP to PNG
- Install the WebP utilities supplied by your operating system or the WebP project.
- Open a terminal in the folder containing the file.
- Run
dwebp input.webp -o output.png. - Open
output.pngand verify dimensions, transparency and color.
The command reads the input file and writes a new PNG; it does not alter the WebP. Change the names or include full paths when the files are in different folders.
Other dwebp outputs
For image-processing software that expects Netpbm-style data, use the appropriate extension, such as dwebp input.webp -o output.ppm or dwebp input.webp -o output.pam. These formats are rarely the best choice for ordinary sharing.
Method 2: Convert with ImageMagick
ImageMagick uses the output filename extension to select the encoder. Its documentation describes magick as a program for converting between image formats.

PNG output
Run:
magick input.webp output.png
PNG is the safer destination when the WebP contains transparency, text, UI graphics or other sharp edges. If the source was lossy WebP, PNG prevents another lossy step but cannot restore detail already discarded in the WebP.
JPEG output
Run:
magick input.webp output.jpg
JPEG removes transparency. Transparent pixels are composited against a background during conversion, so choose or add that background deliberately rather than assuming it will remain transparent. You can set JPEG quality explicitly, for example:
magick input.webp -quality 90 output.jpg
The useful quality value depends on the image and your file-size target. Compare the result at 100% and at the size where it will actually be published.

Batch conversion
ImageMagick can process filename patterns, but shell syntax differs by platform. In a folder containing WebP files, a POSIX shell example is:
for f in *.webp; do magick "$f" "${f%.webp}.png"; done
Test the command on a copy of the folder first. It preserves the base filename while changing the extension; files with unusual names, spaces or uppercase extensions may require a platform-specific script.
Method 3: Convert in Python with Pillow
Pillow is useful when conversion is part of an application, upload pipeline or batch job. Install it with python -m pip install Pillow.
Convert one file to PNG or JPEG
from PIL import Image
with Image.open("input.webp") as image:
print(image.format, image.size, image.mode)
if image.mode in ("RGBA", "LA"):
image.save("output.png", format="PNG")
else:
image.convert("RGB").save("output.jpg", format="JPEG", quality=90)
Do not blindly convert an image with an alpha channel to JPEG: RGB has no transparency. If you need a specific background, composite the image over that color before converting.
Batch conversion with verification
from pathlib import Path
from PIL import Image
source_dir = Path("webp")
out_dir = Path("converted")
out_dir.mkdir(exist_ok=True)
for src in source_dir.glob("*.webp"):
with Image.open(src) as image:
frames = getattr(image, "n_frames", 1)
destination = out_dir / (src.stem + ".png")
image.seek(0)
image.save(destination, format="PNG")
print(src.name, image.size, "frames:", frames)
This script deliberately writes the first frame as PNG and reports the frame count. If the count is greater than one, use an animation-aware workflow instead of assuming a still conversion represents the whole file.

Animated WebP requires a different workflow
The official dwebp documentation states that animated WebP files are not supported. A command that succeeds may therefore produce only a still result, and it is the wrong tool when every frame must be retained.

Pillow exposes WebP frame information and frame-duration metadata, but preserving an animation still requires code or an editor that writes an animated destination format. Decide whether you need an animated GIF, animated WebP, a video, or a frame sequence, then use a tool that explicitly supports that output. Always check frame count and playback after export.
How to preserve quality, transparency and metadata
When lossless output is possible
Writing a WebP to PNG avoids adding JPEG-style loss during the conversion. It does not recreate detail lost when the original WebP was encoded with lossy compression. Keep the WebP as the archival original and treat PNG as a derivative.
Transparency checks
Open the source against a contrasting background, then inspect the converted file the same way. PNG can carry an alpha channel; JPEG cannot. A checkerboard shown by an editor is not part of the image, so verify the file’s mode or pixel data rather than relying only on its preview.
Dimensions, color and metadata
Conversion normally keeps pixel dimensions, but resizing, color-profile handling and metadata settings can change the result. Compare width, height, orientation, color appearance and important metadata before publishing. A conversion that looks correct in one viewer can still fail in a CMS with stricter color or file rules.
Fix common conversion problems
“Command not found”
The utility is not installed or is not on your PATH. Install the WebP tools for dwebp or ImageMagick for magick, then open a new terminal and run the command again.
“Unable to open file” or a zero-byte output
Check the spelling, capitalization and working directory. Use an absolute path, confirm the file is readable, and make sure the download is complete rather than an HTML error page saved with a WebP extension.

The PNG has a different background
The source may not contain transparency, or the application composited it before export. Inspect the source mode and alpha channel. For JPEG, choose the background explicitly because transparency cannot be retained.

JPEG quality, resizing and repeated lossy encoding are common causes. Export once from the best available source, avoid unnecessary resizing, and compare a PNG derivative when detail matters.
Only one frame was converted
The input is animated. dwebp does not support animation, and a simple Pillow save writes the selected frame unless you implement frame handling. Use an animation-capable editor or library and verify playback.
The converted file is too large
PNG is lossless and can be much larger for photographic content. Use JPEG for an opaque photograph when compatibility and size matter, tune quality, or retain WebP for web delivery while providing a required fallback format.

Performance, reliability and cost considerations
- Local tools: dwebp, ImageMagick and Pillow avoid upload limits and are suitable for repeatable batch jobs.
- Memory: large images and multi-frame files can require substantial RAM, especially when decoded before encoding.
- Quality: avoid converting JPEG to JPEG repeatedly; retain the highest-quality source and create derivatives from it.
- Automation: check exit codes, confirm that an output exists and record dimensions, format and frame count in your pipeline logs.
- Remote capture: ScreenshotNeo is useful when the source is a live page rather than a local file; its verdict and billing headers help distinguish a clean capture from a failed load.
Quick decision checklist
- Need only to view the file? Open it in a current major browser; conversion may be unnecessary.
- Need transparency or a lossless derivative? Choose PNG.
- Need a smaller, opaque photograph for legacy software? Choose JPEG and set quality deliberately.
- Need every animation frame? Do not use ordinary
dwebpor a one-frame save. - Need many local files? Use ImageMagick or Pillow with verification.
- Need a screenshot of a web page rather than an existing local image? Use ScreenshotNeo, then convert the returned image if required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does converting WebP to PNG improve image quality?
No. PNG prevents another lossy encoding step, but it cannot restore detail that was already lost when a lossy WebP was created.
Why did my transparent WebP become black or white?
The destination or conversion path discarded the alpha channel. PNG supports transparency; JPEG does not, so composite onto an intentional background before creating a JPEG.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

No. Renaming changes only the filename extension, not the encoded data. Decode and re-encode the image with dwebp, ImageMagick, Pillow or another real converter.
Which method is best for a one-off conversion?
Use dwebp for a direct PNG conversion, or ImageMagick when you need PNG or JPEG and want one consistent command-line tool.
Will conversion preserve EXIF metadata?
Do not assume it will. Check the output with your image software and preserve the original when metadata, color profiles or orientation information is important.
