Open Spotlight Search, enter an amount or measurement, and add a target currency or unit if you want a specific result. Apple confirms that Spotlight can show currency information on iPhone and iPad; unit-query examples are documented by a secondary how-to, so wording and availability may vary by device and locale.
Convert units or currency with Spotlight on iPhone
- Open the Home Screen or Lock Screen. If your iPhone has a Search button on the Home Screen, tap it. Otherwise, swipe down from the middle of the screen to open Search.
- Type the amount and, if needed, the destination. For example, try €100 or 100 Euros for a currency result, $100 to AUD or $100 to CAD to specify a currency, or 100cm in ft for a length conversion.
- Check the suggested result in the search results.
Apple’s Search with Spotlight on iPhone guide says: “You can check stock and currency information, and find and open webpages, apps, and images in your photo library, across your system, and on the web.” The specific unit-query examples above come from a secondary how-to, not from Apple’s cited Spotlight guide.
Convert units or currency with Spotlight on iPad
- Go to the Home Screen or Lock Screen and swipe down from the middle of the screen.
- Enter an amount and, optionally, a target currency or unit. The examples €100, $100 to AUD, and 100cm in in illustrate the query patterns described by the secondary how-to.
- Review the result in Search. If it does not show the conversion you need, use Calculator’s Convert mode below.
Apple also documents currency information in its Search with Spotlight on iPad guide. Spotlight query syntax can differ by region or operating-system version, and Apple’s cited guide does not guarantee every example will work on every device.

Set a specific currency or measurement target
Adding a destination makes the request explicit. Currency examples include $100 to AUD and $100 to CAD; for a measurement, try 100cm in ft or 100cm in in. If Spotlight returns an unexpected result, try spelling out the target or using its abbreviation.

The secondary how-to says the default currency target is based on the device’s regional settings. You can review those settings at Settings > General > Language & Region. Apple’s cited Spotlight guides do not specify live exchange-rate timing, conversion precision, or support for every currency and unit, so do not treat a displayed value as a guaranteed real-time quote.
Use Calculator if Spotlight does not show the conversion
Calculator offers a dedicated conversion flow on both iPhone and iPad. It is a useful fallback when a search query is not interpreted as intended because you choose the conversion category and source and destination units yourself.

- Open the Calculator app.
- Choose Change Mode > Convert.
- Select the category and the source and destination units or currencies, then enter the value.
On iPad, Math Notes is another built-in option for conversions. For frequent conversions across specialized categories, a dedicated converter app may offer a broader selection; you do not need one for a basic Spotlight lookup.

- Try a clearer query: include an explicit target, such as $100 to CAD or 100cm in ft.
- Check Search settings: iPhone and iPad let you include or exclude apps from Search; iPad also provides controls for app content. The exact results available can depend on those settings.
- Consider app indexing: third-party app content appears in Spotlight only when the app supports Spotlight indexing.
- Switch to Calculator Convert: select the conversion category and both units or currencies directly rather than relying on Spotlight to interpret the query.
These options can help diagnose missing app or content results, but they do not guarantee that every conversion query is supported across all locales or operating-system versions.
