Pandoc does not normally rasterize a standalone SVG into a PNG. Convert the SVG first with librsvg’s rsvg-convert, then reference the PNG in your Pandoc document. For example: rsvg-convert input.svg > output.png. Pandoc can then use output.png when it builds a PDF, HTML page, DOCX, or another supported document.
Why Pandoc is not the SVG-to-PNG converter
Pandoc converts documents between markup and document formats. Its image handling depends on the output format and, for some conversion paths, on other programs installed on your computer. Turning an SVG file into PNG is a separate rasterization step: a rasterizer draws the vector artwork into pixels and writes an image file.
The practical distinction is important. A Pandoc command such as pandoc document.md -o document.pdf builds a document; it is not a general-purpose command for saving each SVG it encounters as a PNG. For SVG support that a target format or renderer does not provide, Pandoc’s installation guidance points to librsvg, which supplies rsvg-convert. Run that tool before Pandoc and use the resulting PNG in your source document.
Install the tools you need
Install Pandoc
Install Pandoc using the method for your operating system. Pandoc’s installation guidance covers the available approaches and package examples. Check that the command is available before building your document:

pandoc --versionThe output should identify an installed Pandoc version. If the shell says that pandoc is not found, installation may be incomplete or its executable may not be on your PATH.
Install librsvg and rsvg-convert
Install librsvg as well; it provides the separate rasterizer used in the examples below. The Pandoc installation guidance gives these package examples:
- macOS with Homebrew:
brew install librsvg - Windows with Chocolatey:
choco install rsvg-convert
Package names and availability can depend on the package manager and its current configuration. After installation, check that the executable is discoverable:
rsvg-convert --helpIf that command is not recognized, confirm that the package installed successfully and that its executable directory is on your PATH. On Windows, close and reopen the terminal after changing the environment so the new path can take effect.
Convert an SVG file to PNG
Open a terminal in the directory containing the SVG, or provide paths to the files. The minimal conversion command is:
rsvg-convert input.svg > output.pngThis reads input.svg and redirects the PNG output to output.png. The librsvg documentation describes rsvg-convert as rendering an SVG document to a raster PNG image. The SVG remains the vector source; the PNG is a separate pixel-based output.

rsvg-convert --output=output.png input.svgEither form is suitable for a simple conversion. The explicit --output form can be easier to read in scripts because the input and output filenames are both visible as command arguments.
Use the PNG in a Pandoc document
Reference the generated file from your Markdown source using a relative path if it is in the same directory:
Then run Pandoc with the output format you need. For example, to create a PDF:
pandoc document.md -o document.pdfThis assumes the Markdown file is named document.md and that output.png is where the relative image path expects it. The PDF engine and its dependencies are separate from SVG rasterization; install the engine required for the PDF output you choose. Converting the image successfully does not, by itself, install or configure that engine.
Choose PNG dimensions and rendering scale
A PNG cannot retain the SVG’s resolution-independent scaling. Choose output dimensions for how the image will be used: a small PNG may look soft when enlarged, while an unnecessarily large one can increase file size. rsvg-convert offers pixel dimensions, aspect-ratio handling, and resolution controls.

Set a width and height
Request a pixel size with --width and --height. To fit the image into a box while preserving its proportions, add --keep-aspect-ratio:
rsvg-convert --width=1200 --height=800 --keep-aspect-ratio input.svg > output.pngThese are requested output bounds, not a command to stretch the artwork to fill every pixel in the box. With aspect-ratio preservation, the SVG’s proportions are kept rather than distorted to match both dimensions exactly. If the appearance or final size matters, inspect the resulting PNG in the context where it will be used.
Set resolution for SVGs with physical units
For SVG content expressed in physical units, set horizontal and vertical resolution explicitly with the DPI options:

The appropriate settings depend on the SVG and the intended output. Do not assume one DPI value or pixel size is right for every document.
Choose a background
PNG output is transparent by default according to the librsvg options. If the image needs a solid background, use --background-color to specify one:
rsvg-convert --background-color=white input.svg > output.pngTransparency can be useful when placing a diagram over different page backgrounds. A solid background can be more predictable when the receiving application or document layout should not show through the image.

When to keep SVG instead of making a PNG
Rasterizing is not always necessary. Pandoc’s manual describes SVG handling in HTML output: images may be represented with img tags that use data: URIs, while the inline-svg class requests an inline SVG element. That is a different output path from making a PNG file.

Consider retaining SVG when the target format and renderer support it reliably and you want vector artwork in the output. Choose PNG when the receiving format or renderer needs raster input, or when a fixed pixel image is what you need. The right choice depends on the output path; support in an HTML workflow should not be taken to mean that every PDF engine or document format will handle the SVG in the same way.
Use ImageMagick as a fallback rasterizer
If librsvg is unavailable in your environment, ImageMagick provides another command-line route for image-format conversion:
magick input.svg output.pngThis is an ImageMagick conversion command, not a Pandoc option. Use it as a separate preprocessing step, then reference the generated PNG in your Markdown as described above. ImageMagick’s documentation describes magick as a program for converting between image formats.
Troubleshoot conversion and Pandoc output
rsvg-convert is not recognized
The shell cannot find the rasterizer. Check that librsvg or the relevant package was installed, then confirm the executable is on PATH. On Windows, reopen the terminal after installation or a path change. If your package manager installed the tool under a different executable name or location, use the package’s installation details to locate it.

For a PDF path through LaTeX, first check that rsvg-convert is installed and available on PATH; Pandoc’s installation guidance identifies librsvg as a tool for formats without SVG support. If your goal is specifically to obtain a PNG file, convert it yourself first and update the Markdown image reference to the PNG. Also verify the PDF engine and its dependencies separately.

The PNG looks stretched, soft, or unexpectedly sized
Review the requested dimensions and whether aspect-ratio preservation was enabled. If the artwork looks distorted, use --keep-aspect-ratio when fitting it into a width-and-height box. If it looks soft at its destination size, render a PNG with dimensions appropriate for that use rather than enlarging a smaller raster image. For SVGs with physical units, check whether explicit DPI settings are needed.
The output has an unwanted background
PNG is transparent by default in the librsvg options. If the receiving document or viewer makes that transparency look wrong, set a solid background with --background-color. Conversely, remove that option if you need the transparent result.
Pandoc cannot find the PNG
Check the image path in the Markdown and where the command runs. A reference such as  is relative, so the PNG must be located where that reference resolves from the document’s working context. Confirm the output filename and capitalization, especially when moving the source and generated image into different directories.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
For a single SVG, the two-step workflow adds little complexity: rasterize the image, then let Pandoc build the document. For repeatable builds, keep the SVG, conversion command, and output image path together in your build process so that the PNG is regenerated when the source artwork changes. That avoids accidentally building a document with an older raster image.
Conversion success and document-generation success are separate checks. If the PNG is missing or unusable, investigate the rasterizer and its arguments. If the PNG is correct but PDF generation fails, investigate the selected PDF engine and its dependencies. This separation makes failures easier to isolate and prevents changing Pandoc settings to solve an image-conversion issue.
Both librsvg and ImageMagick are software tools, but their installation and maintenance depend on the operating system and package source you use. The commands above do not imply a particular processing speed, file-size outcome, or quality level for every SVG; those depend on the source artwork and requested rendering settings. Review the generated image at the size and against the background where it will appear.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does converting an SVG to PNG change or delete the original SVG?
No. The commands read the SVG as input and write a separate PNG output file; they do not ask the rasterizer to overwrite the SVG.
