Convert the image data, not just its filename, then verify the file and the social preview. A dependable workflow is: choose the format for a specific reason, convert with ImageMagick or a hosted transformer such as Cloudinary, inspect the resulting MIME type and dimensions, update the Open Graph metadata, and test the page in the destination platform’s current preview tool.
What an Open Graph image format change actually involves
The og:image property is an image URL representing a page or object; it is not a command that converts the file. The Open Graph Protocol documentation also defines optional properties for the image: og:image:type (MIME type), og:image:width, og:image:height, and og:image:alt. If you publish those properties, they should describe the file that is actually available at the URL.
Renaming cover.png to cover.jpg leaves the underlying encoding unchanged and can cause a crawler or image library to reject it. A real conversion decodes the source pixels and writes a new file in the target format.
Choose PNG, JPEG, WebP or another format
PNG
Use PNG when you need lossless graphics, sharp text, or transparency. PNG files retain an alpha channel; JPEG does not.

JPEG
JPEG is useful for photographs and other continuous-tone images when broad legacy compatibility or a smaller file is more important than transparency. Conversion from a transparent source requires deciding what background color should replace transparent pixels.
WebP, AVIF and other formats
WebP and AVIF can be useful for modern delivery pipelines, but acceptance is platform-specific. The protocol documentation does not promise that every social crawler accepts every encoding. Treat a successful local conversion as only one step and test the actual destination preview.
Method 1: Convert locally with ImageMagick
ImageMagick supports reading and writing many formats, including JPEG, PNG, WebP and AVIF, subject to the delegates enabled in your installed build. Confirm your installation and available formats on the ImageMagick format documentation.
Install and inspect the source
- Install ImageMagick from your operating system’s package manager or the project’s distribution.
- Check the source before conversion:
magick identify -verbose input.png - Look for the detected format, width, height, colorspace and whether an alpha channel is present.
Convert PNG to JPEG
For an opaque source, the basic command is:
magick input.png output.jpgIf the PNG has transparency, flatten it onto an explicit background first so you do not get an unintended result:
magick input.png -background white -alpha remove -alpha off output.jpgThe exact appearance depends on the source and the installed build. Do not assume a universal quality setting; choose and document one appropriate to your workflow, then inspect the output.
Convert JPEG to PNG or WebP
magick input.jpg output.png
magick input.jpg output.webpConverting JPEG to PNG does not restore detail lost by the original JPEG compression. It only changes the container and encoding.

Verify the result
magick identify -verbose output.jpgConfirm that the reported format is JPEG (or your selected target), the dimensions are what you expect, and transparency is present only when the target format supports it. Also open the file in an image viewer and check text, edges, colors and cropping.

Method 2: Use Cloudinary for URL-based conversion
Cloudinary documents conversion through a delivery URL extension or a format transformation parameter. Its image-format documentation describes f_auto, which can select an output such as WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL or JPEG according to the requesting browser and account configuration.
Delivery conversion versus a new source file
A transformed Cloudinary URL can deliver a converted representation without replacing your original asset. That is useful for a site-wide pipeline or responsive delivery. It does not necessarily create a separately managed file that you can move elsewhere. If you need a permanent artifact, download the transformed result and verify it before publishing.
Typical URL patterns
Use the format extension or the documented format transformation in the delivery URL for your Cloudinary setup. For automatic selection, use the documented f_auto behavior. Account configuration and the requesting browser affect the result, so inspect the response rather than assuming a particular format.
Publish the converted image in Open Graph metadata
- Put the converted file at a stable, publicly reachable HTTPS URL. Ensure the server returns an image content type, not an HTML error page.
- Set
og:imageto that exact URL. - If you include structured properties, update them to match the converted file.

<meta property="og:image:alt" content="A description of the article cover">The protocol says that a page specifying og:image should also specify og:image:alt. Keep the description meaningful rather than repeating a filename. Do not publish dimensions copied from the old format if the conversion or resizing changed them.

Check the HTTP response
- Request the image URL and confirm a successful status.
- Check the
Content-Typeheader against the actual encoding (for example,image/jpeg). - Confirm that redirects, authentication, robots controls or a firewall are not blocking the crawler.
- Download the response and run
magick identifyon it; this catches URLs that return an HTML error document.
Check the rendered social preview
Use the current preview or debugger supplied by the social platform where the link will be shared. Inspect the rendered card, not just your page source. Crawlers cache images and metadata, so a changed file may not appear immediately. Platform requirements and accepted encodings can change; the Open Graph specification does not provide a universal compatibility matrix.

Common failures and fixes
The extension changed but the format did not
Cause: The filename was renamed instead of transcoded. Fix: Run a real ImageMagick conversion or request a Cloudinary transformation, then inspect the output format.
JPEG has a black or unexpected background
Cause: JPEG has no transparency channel. Fix: Flatten the source against an intentional background color before writing JPEG, or keep PNG/WebP when transparency is required.
The preview is blank or shows an old image
Cause: The crawler received an error, was blocked, or is serving a cached result. Fix: Fetch the public URL yourself, verify status and MIME type, remove access barriers, use a new stable URL when appropriate, and rerun the platform’s preview tool.

Cause: og:image:type, width or height still describes the source. Fix: derive the values from the converted file and update the tags together.
ImageMagick reports an unsupported format
Cause: Your build lacks the delegate needed for that format. Fix: inspect the installed build and its enabled formats, then install a build with the required delegate or use a hosted transformer.
Automatic format selection differs between visitors
Cause: Cloudinary’s f_auto can select according to browser and account configuration. Fix: test representative requests and use an explicit target format when a platform requires one.

- Decide whether you need transparency, lossless graphics, broad compatibility or smaller delivery.
- Transcode with ImageMagick or a hosted service; never rely on an extension rename.
- Inspect actual format, MIME type, dimensions and alpha support.

Does changing PNG to JPG reduce quality?

Can I keep the original image after conversion?
Yes. Keep the source as an archive or master and publish the converted derivative at the URL used by og:image.
Is WebP guaranteed to work for social previews?
