Load Highcharts’ modules/exporting.js, then call chart.exportChart() or use the chart’s context menu. Highcharts supports PNG, JPEG/JPG, SVG, and PDF. In Highcharts 12.3.0 and later, PNG, JPEG, and SVG export locally by default; browser PDF export is an opt-in path that needs offline-exporting.js plus jsPDF and svg2pdf. If client-side conversion is unsuitable, use a self-hosted Node export server.
1. Enable Highcharts exporting
Include the exporting module after highcharts.js (or highstock.js). With exporting enabled, Highcharts adds a context button and the chart export API.
<script src="https://code.highcharts.com/highcharts.js"></script>
<script src="https://code.highcharts.com/modules/exporting.js"></script>
<div id="container" style="height:400px"></div>
<script>
const chart = Highcharts.chart('container', {
title: { text: 'Monthly revenue' },
xAxis: { categories: ['Jan', 'Feb', 'Mar', 'Apr'] },
series: [{ name: 'Revenue', data: [12, 19, 15, 24] }]
});
</script>
The built-in button is suitable for interactive downloads. You can also create your own button and invoke the same chart methods from application code.

scale: 2
});
});
// JPEG
chart.exportChart({ type: 'image/jpeg', filename: 'monthly-revenue' });
// SVG (vector output)
chart.exportChart({ type: 'image/svg+xml', filename: 'monthly-revenue' });
// PDF (server conversion unless local PDF is configured)
chart.exportChart({ type: 'application/pdf', filename: 'monthly-revenue' });
PNG and JPEG are raster images: they are convenient for documents, email, and social posts. SVG is vector markup, so it remains sharp when edited or scaled. PDF is a document format and is useful for reports or printing.
Use a custom button
<button id="download-png">Download PNG</button>
<button id="download-svg">Download SVG</button>
Place the listeners after the chart has been created. For a chart whose configuration changes, export after the final redraw so the downloaded image reflects the current state.
3. Local export versus Highcharts’ export server
Starting with Highcharts 12.3.0, exporting.js handles PNG, JPEG, and SVG locally by default, without requiring offline-exporting.js. Local conversion keeps the generated chart in the browser. To select the documented remote route instead, set exporting.local to false.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Highcharts.chart('container', {
exporting: {
local: true,
fallbackToExportServer: true
},
series: [{ data: [1, 3, 2] }]
});
When remote export is used, the browser sends the generated SVG to the export service. Choose local export where the browser and chart features support it and the chart must not leave the user’s environment. If you need server processing, Highcharts documents a self-hosted Node export server.

When local export is a poor fit
- The deployed browser is outside the supported client-side matrix.
- The chart contains embedded images affected by CORS restrictions.
- A chart feature or output format is not handled by the browser path.
- You need repeatable, server-side rendering for a job queue or backend workflow.
If you disable fallback, add an error handler so users receive a useful message rather than a silent failure:
Highcharts.chart('container', {
exporting: {
fallbackToExportServer: false,
error: function (err) {
console.error('Chart export failed', err);
alert('This chart cannot be exported in this browser.');
}
},
series: [{ data: [4, 7, 5] }]
});
4. Export PDF in the browser
Local PDF generation requires offline-exporting.js, jsPDF, and svg2pdf. Load offline-exporting.js after exporting.js, and either preload the third-party libraries or configure their URLs through exporting.libURL. These dependencies are third-party and are not covered by the Highcharts license.
<script src="https://code.highcharts.com/highcharts.js"></script>
<script src="https://code.highcharts.com/modules/exporting.js"></script>
<script src="https://code.highcharts.com/modules/offline-exporting.js"></script>
<script>
Highcharts.chart('container', {
exporting: {
libURL: '/vendor/highcharts-libs/'
},
series: [{ data: [2, 6, 4] }]
});
</script>
For Highcharts 13 and later, PDF dependencies are not automatically loaded unless exporting.libURL is defined or the scripts are already present. Verify the exact release in your application before copying this setup. The client-side PDF path has limitations, including image handling; it can fall back to the export server.
5. Get SVG for custom processing
chart.getSVG() returns SVG markup rather than immediately downloading a file. Use it when you need to inject attributes, store the vector source, pass it to another renderer, or perform your own conversion.

const link = document.createElement('a');
link.href = URL.createObjectURL(blob);
link.download = 'print-version.svg';
link.click();
URL.revokeObjectURL(link.href);
The API gives you SVG; converting that SVG to PNG or another format is a separate downstream step.
6. Control dimensions and image quality
Export size is determined by source dimensions and scale. Highcharts’ documentation illustrates a 600 × 400 chart becoming 1200 × 800 at a scale of 2. That is a configuration example, not a guarantee for every chart.
chart.exportChart({
type: 'image/png',
sourceWidth: 1600,
sourceHeight: 1000,
scale: 1,
filename: 'dashboard-print'
});
- Set source dimensions for a specific layout, such as a report column or slide.
- Increase scale when you need more pixels from the same logical chart size.
- Use SVG when the destination supports vector artwork and later editing.
- Check labels, legends, and data labels at the final dimensions; increasing pixels does not fix a layout that is already crowded.
7. A self-hosted Node export server
Highcharts documents a Node export server for cases where browser conversion is unreliable or server-side processing is preferred. Its server accepts a chart configuration or SVG and uses Puppeteer to render PNG, JPG, PDF, or SVG. Self-hosting keeps deployment under your control, but you must operate the Node service and its browser runtime.
A typical backend flow is:
- Serialize the chart options or obtain SVG with
chart.getSVG(). - Send that payload to your export-server instance.
- Store or return the rendered file from your own application.
- Apply authentication, request limits, and cleanup appropriate to an internal rendering service.
Do not assume a server renderer fixes every issue: external images still need valid access and CORS handling, and the server must load the same Highcharts version and modules as the application.

8. Troubleshooting export failures
The export button is missing
Confirm that modules/exporting.js loads after Highcharts and that the chart’s exporting option has not been disabled. Check the browser console for a script or version mismatch.
The download opens a blank image
Inspect external images, SVG data, and CORS headers. Embedded images that the browser cannot read may prevent a correct canvas export. Try SVG, remove the offending image, or use a server workflow that can access the assets.
PDF fails but PNG works
PDF needs the offline module and jsPDF/svg2pdf dependencies. Confirm their load order and libURL. Remember that client-side PDF has image limitations; allow fallback to the export server when appropriate.

That behavior can occur in older or unsupported browser combinations. Use a current supported browser, test the documented compatibility matrix, or move conversion to the export server.

Exported content differs from the on-screen chart
Export uses chart options and export dimensions. Set explicit source dimensions, wait until asynchronous data and images are ready, and export after the final redraw.
Privacy policy forbids sending charts away
Use local PNG, JPEG, or SVG export where supported, or run the documented Node export server yourself. The public export route transmits generated SVG to the service; review its current terms and fair-use policy before relying on it.
9. Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo
If your goal is a screenshot of a page that already renders the Highcharts chart, ScreenshotNeo captures the URL through one API request. It accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

10. Practical decision checklist
- Choose
exportChart()for a normal user download. - Choose SVG for vector editing or unlimited scaling.
- Choose local PNG/JPEG/SVG when supported and chart privacy matters.
- Add offline dependencies only when browser PDF is required.
- Use a self-hosted Node server for controlled backend rendering.
- Use ScreenshotNeo when you need a clean webpage capture rather than Highcharts’ internal chart export.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Highcharts export the chart data or only the visual chart?
The normal export APIs produce a rendered image, SVG, or PDF. Use your own data endpoint if you also need machine-readable values.
Can I export only one Highcharts series?
Create an export-specific chart configuration or temporarily hide other series, redraw, export, and restore the original visibility.
Is SVG considered an image?
Yes. SVG is an image format, but it is vector markup rather than a raster bitmap.
