To convert an image to JPG, open it in an image app and use Export, Save As, or an equivalent command with JPEG selected. Renaming photo.png to photo.jpg changes only the filename; it does not rewrite the image data. A real conversion decodes the source format and encodes a new JPEG file.
This guide covers HEIF/HEIC, PNG, WEBP, BMP and similar files on macOS, Windows, mobile devices and the web, including quality, transparency, metadata, privacy and common failures.
JPG and JPEG mean the same image format
.jpg and .jpeg are filename extensions for JPEG-encoded images. Microsoft lists .jpe, .jpeg and .jpg with the image/jpeg MIME type; other references also recognize .jif and .jfif. The extension helps an operating system or website decide how to handle a file, but it does not determine the bytes inside the file.
That is why an image named scan.jpg can still contain PNG or HEIC data. A receiving service may reject it, display a broken image, or report a format error. Conversion must create a new file whose contents are JPEG.

The reliable conversion workflow
- Keep the original. Make a copy or export to a new filename. This preserves the source’s quality, transparency and metadata if you need them later.
- Open the source in an image application. Use an app that can read the source format and write JPEG.
- Choose the format command. Look for Export, Save As, Convert or Download as. Do not merely edit the extension in the filename field.
- Select JPEG or JPG. If the app offers both, they produce the same format.
- Set quality and other options. Choose a quality level, dimensions, color profile and metadata policy when available.
- Save with a new
.jpgor.jpegname. - Verify the result. Reopen it, inspect dimensions and appearance, check how transparency was handled, and confirm that the destination accepts
image/jpeg.
Convert HEIF or HEIC to JPG on a Mac
Apple documents this route for HEIF images:
- Open the image in Photos or Preview.
- Choose File → Export.
- Set Format to JPEG.
- Choose a quality level and destination, then save.
HEIF generally provides better compression than JPEG at comparable visual quality. Exporting to JPG can therefore increase file size in exchange for wider compatibility. JPEG also discards information, so retain the HEIF original if you may edit the image again.
Make future iPhone and iPad photos use JPG
For new photos, open Settings → Camera → Formats and select Most Compatible. New captures use JPEG rather than High Efficiency (HEIF). This does not convert photos already in your library.
Convert PNG, WEBP or BMP to JPG on Windows
Open the source in an installed editor such as Paint or another application that exposes a JPEG export option. Use File → Save as (or Export), select JPEG picture, choose a new name and save. Exact labels vary by application and Windows version.
Windows Imaging Component includes a native JPEG codec. Encoders may expose an image-quality value from 0.0 (lowest fidelity) to 1.0 (highest); Microsoft’s documented default for its native JPEG codec is 0.9. The setting is not a universal percentage of quality or file-size reduction: output depends on dimensions, content, chroma subsampling and the encoder.

Transparency warning
JPEG has no alpha-transparency channel. Transparent areas in PNG or WEBP must be composited onto a solid background during export, commonly white, black or a color you choose. If you need transparent pixels, keep PNG or another format that supports alpha.
Quality, size and editing consequences
JPEG is lossy. It is usually effective for photographs, but sharp diagrams, screenshots, text, logos and charts can show ringing or block artifacts. Exporting the same image repeatedly compounds loss because each JPEG export recompresses already compressed data.
- Use a high quality setting for photographs that may be edited or archived again.
- For diagrams, text and line art, prefer PNG unless a receiving system specifically requires JPEG.
- Resize before export only when you intentionally need smaller dimensions; resizing and compression are separate operations.
- Keep the original source and create delivery copies at the required dimensions and quality.
- Do not promise a fixed file-size reduction. A detailed photograph, a flat illustration and a small icon can produce very different results.

For identity documents, private client work, medical images or regulated data, prefer local conversion. If you upload, read the provider’s retention and deletion terms and remove files afterward where the service permits.

How to check that conversion really worked
- File type: the application or operating system should identify the result as JPEG, not merely show a
.jpgsuffix. - Dimensions: verify that width and height did not change unexpectedly.
- Color: compare skin tones, gradients and dark areas; color-profile conversion can alter appearance.
- Transparency: inspect formerly transparent edges against the selected background.
- Metadata: decide whether EXIF location, camera details and timestamps should remain. Some exporters strip them.
- Destination acceptance: confirm the upload reports
image/jpegand stays within its size and dimension limits.
Common problems and fixes
“Renaming did not convert the file”
Rename it back, open the original in an image app and use Export or Save As with JPEG selected. Changing the suffix never changes the encoded data.

“The JPG will not open”
The source may have been renamed rather than converted, or the export may have been interrupted. Re-export to a new file, then open that file in a second application. If it remains unreadable, recover the untouched original and try a different converter.
“The transparent background became black or white”
That is expected when converting to JPEG. Choose the intended matte/background color before export, or deliver PNG instead.
“The result is blurry or has blocks”
Raise the JPEG quality, avoid repeated exports, and preserve the original. For text-heavy graphics, use PNG if the destination allows it.

“The file is still too large”
Reduce pixel dimensions when appropriate, then export at a balanced quality. Removing unnecessary metadata can help, but there is no universal size percentage.

“The app does not show JPEG as an option”
That application may only read the source or may require a different command such as Export rather than Save. Open the image in another installed editor with JPEG writing support.
“An online converter is blocked or rejects my file”
Check its maximum size, supported source formats and filename rules. For sensitive images, switch to a local app instead of uploading to another service.

Is there any difference between JPG and JPEG after conversion?
No. Both extensions identify the JPEG format; choose the spelling required by the receiving system.

You can save a JPEG as PNG, but the information already discarded by JPEG compression cannot be restored. The PNG will usually be larger.
Will converting HEIC to JPG preserve Live Photos or editing history?
A still-image JPEG export represents the selected image frame. It does not preserve the original container’s Live Photo motion or full non-destructive editing data.

Use an image application’s JPEG export and keep the original. Renaming an extension is not conversion, JPEG is lossy and non-transparent, and the right quality, background and privacy choices depend on how the resulting file will be used.
