The reliable way to convert a screenshot to PNG is to save or export it as PNG—not to rename its filename. New Windows captures can be saved as PNG in Snipping Tool, Mac screenshots can be captured in SDR (Most Compatible) mode or exported from Preview, and iPhone or iPad screenshots use PNG when Screen Capture is set to SDR. If an existing image is JPG, HEIF/HEIC, or WebP, open it in an editor that can decode that format and use Save As or Export with PNG selected.
First, check whether the screenshot is already PNG
Many screenshots need no conversion. Standard screenshots taken on a Mac are PNG, and iPhone screenshots use PNG when the device is configured for SDR. Windows Snipping Tool can also save a capture as PNG. Check the file extension first, then confirm the format in your operating system’s file information or image editor if the extension is missing or suspicious.
- PNG: already in the requested format. No conversion is necessary.
- JPG or JPEG: a compressed image that must be exported as PNG if you need PNG encoding.
- HEIF or HEIC: commonly produced by HDR screenshot workflows; use an editor that supports HEIF and export to PNG.
- WebP: open it in an editor with WebP support and export a new PNG.
PNG preserves image data without the lossy compression used by JPEG, which is useful for interface text, diagrams, and sharp edges. The resulting PNG can be larger than the source, so keep the original until you have checked the converted file.
Convert a screenshot to PNG on Windows
Save a new capture from Snipping Tool
- Press Windows + Shift + S. Snipping Tool opens its capture bar.
- Choose rectangular, free-form, window, or full-screen snip.
- Capture the area you need. Select the notification or open Snipping Tool to view the resulting snip.
- Choose Save Snip.
- In the save dialog, select PNG in the file-type menu when multiple formats are offered, choose a folder, and save.
The exact save dialog can vary with the Windows version and installed apps. If PNG is not shown there, save the capture and use Paint’s Save As workflow below.

Convert an existing JPG, HEIC, or WebP in Paint
- Open Paint from the Start menu.
- Choose File > Open and select the screenshot.
- Choose File > Save as > PNG picture.
- Give the converted file a new name and save it. Keep the original extension on the source file.
Paint must be able to decode the source. If it cannot open a HEIC or WebP file, use another image editor with support for that format, then choose its PNG export option. Do not overwrite the only copy until you have opened the new PNG and checked its dimensions and appearance.
Convert a screenshot to PNG on a Mac
Capture directly as PNG
- Press Shift + Command + 3 for the entire screen, Shift + Command + 4 for a selection, or Shift + Command + 5 for Screenshot controls.
- In Screenshot options, select SDR (Most Compatible) when that option is available.
- Capture the screen. The resulting screenshot is saved as PNG in the normal screenshot location unless you chose another destination.
SDR (Most Compatible) is the practical choice when another application, upload form, or documentation system expects ordinary PNG screenshots. Some protected video applications block screenshots; capture only content you are permitted to record.
Export an existing image with Preview
- Double-click the screenshot to open it in Preview. If another app opens it, Control-click the file and choose Open With > Preview.
- Choose File > Export.
- Set Format to PNG.
- Choose a destination and select Save.
Export creates a new PNG-encoded file. It does not merely change the name of the original, so the source remains available if you need its metadata or smaller file size.
Make an iPhone or iPad screenshot a PNG
Set new screenshots to PNG with SDR
- Open Settings > General > Screen Capture.
- Select SDR.
- Take a screenshot with your device’s normal button combination.
With SDR selected, screenshots use PNG. This is separate from screen recordings, which use HEVC. The setting affects new captures; it does not rewrite screenshots already saved as HEIF.

Convert an existing HDR/HEIF screenshot
- Transfer or share the screenshot to a Mac or Windows computer, or open it in a compatible image editor on the device.
- Use the editor’s Export or Save As command.
- Select PNG, save a new file, and open it to verify that colors, transparency, and text look correct.
If HDR is selected under Screen Capture, screenshots use HEIF. HEIF can retain HDR information, so converting to PNG may change how highlights and color are displayed in software that does not support HDR. Keep the HEIF original when that information matters.
Why renaming the extension does not convert the image
Changing image.jpg to image.png only changes the filename. It does not rewrite the encoded pixels, compression method, or internal format markers. A program that inspects the file may still identify it as JPEG, HEIF, or WebP, and another program may refuse to open it under the misleading name. Microsoft explicitly describes changing a filename extension as not converting a file to another format.
Use Save As or Export instead. Those commands decode the source image and write a new file using PNG encoding. Renaming is safe only when the file is already PNG and the extension is accidentally missing or incorrect; even then, confirming the actual format first is best.

Developer automation: explicitly encode PNG
For automated capture, select PNG in the encoder or export API rather than relying on a filename. Apple’s ScreenCaptureKit documentation describes CGImageRef output that can be saved as HEIC, JPEG, or PNG; choose the PNG content type when encoding the captured image. The same principle applies to any screenshot library: decode the captured image, select a PNG encoder, and write the resulting bytes to a new file.

The file says .png but an app rejects it
The extension may have been renamed without conversion, or the file may be damaged. Open the original in Paint, Preview, or another editor and export a new PNG. If the editor cannot open it, obtain a fresh capture or use an application that supports the source format.

PNG is not offered in the save dialog
Save the image first, then open it in Paint on Windows or Preview on macOS and use Save As or Export. Some capture utilities expose only their default format at capture time.
Windows cannot open the HEIC or WebP source
Use an editor with HEIF/HEIC or WebP decoding support, then export PNG. Do not delete the source while testing a new workflow.

The converted image looks different
HDR/HEIF to PNG conversion can change color or highlight handling. Compare the PNG with the original in a color-managed viewer and retain the HEIF file when HDR fidelity is important.
The PNG is unexpectedly large
PNG is lossless and can be larger than a JPEG or WebP. Resize the image only if the destination permits it, or keep the original compressed file for archival use while supplying PNG where compatibility requires it.

Can I convert a screenshot by changing .jpg to .png?
No. Renaming changes only the filename. Use Save As or Export with PNG selected so the image is actually re-encoded.
Are iPhone screenshots PNG?
They are PNG when Settings > General > Screen Capture is set to SDR. HDR screenshots use HEIF and need an export step.
What is the fastest way to get a PNG screenshot?
