To convert a screenshot to JPEG, open the existing image in an editor that supports JPEG or JPG export, choose Save As or Export, select JPEG/JPG, and save a new copy. Renaming .png to .jpg does not convert the image.

The exact menu depends on your device and app. The safest workflow is to keep the original screenshot, export a JPEG copy, and then verify the new file’s format before uploading or sharing it.

What actually changes when you convert a screenshot?

A screenshot is commonly captured as PNG, although the source format varies by device and application. Conversion means decoding that existing file and encoding a new copy as JPEG. JPEG uses lossy compression, so it can alter fine details, sharp interface edges, and small text. It also does not preserve transparency.

  • Do not rename the extension: changing image.png to image.jpg leaves the file’s internal format unchanged.
  • Keep the original: retain the PNG (or other source file) for later editing and export a separate JPEG.
  • Check the result: inspect the file’s properties or open it in an application that identifies the format.
  • Do not assume a smaller file: JPEG size depends on image content and the selected quality setting. Compare the result rather than promising a particular reduction.

Convert a screenshot on Windows 10 or Windows 11

Method 1: Snipping Tool, then Paint

Microsoft’s Snipping Tool opens a captured snip for changes, saving, and sharing. Microsoft also documents opening a screenshot in Paint through Edit > Edit with Paint. The following workflow applies whether you just captured the snip or already have a screenshot file.

  1. Capture the screen with Snipping Tool, or locate the existing screenshot in File Explorer.
  2. Open the image in Snipping Tool. If it is already saved, right-click it and choose Open with > Snipping Tool when that option is available.
  3. Select Edit > Edit with Paint. If your Windows build shows a different command, open Paint separately and use File > Open to choose the screenshot.
  4. In Paint, choose File > Save as and select JPEG picture (the extension will normally be .jpg).
  5. Choose a new filename and folder, then select Save. Do not overwrite the original unless you have another copy.

Microsoft’s support pages confirm the Snipping Tool save/edit workflow and Paint editing path, but the formats shown in the Save As list can vary by Windows release and application version. If JPEG is not listed, use another installed editor with an explicit JPEG export option.

Method 2: Open the existing file directly in Paint

  1. Right-click the screenshot and choose Open with > Paint.
  2. Select File > Save as > JPEG picture.
  3. Save to a different name, then check the new file in File Explorer.

This is the quickest route when the screenshot is already on your PC; you do not need to capture it again.

Verify the Windows file

In File Explorer, turn on View > Show > File name extensions if extensions are hidden. Right-click the exported image, choose Properties, and review Type of file and the file size. Opening the image in another editor can provide a second confirmation. A filename ending in .jpg alone is not proof if the extension was changed manually.

Convert a screenshot on iPhone

Apple’s iPhone User Guide says screenshots are stored in Photos and can be cropped or marked up from the screenshot interface. The reviewed guide does not document a direct JPEG export sequence, so the available buttons can differ by iOS version and app.

Try an explicit export control

  1. Open Photos and select the screenshot.
  2. Use Edit for any crop or annotation you need.
  3. Open the Share menu and look for an action or app that explicitly offers JPEG or JPG export.
  4. Save the exported copy and verify its format in the destination app or after transferring it to a computer.

If Photos does not expose a JPEG option, do not assume that saving or sharing converted the image. Transfer the screenshot to a computer and use an editor with a documented JPEG export control, or use a trusted editor that clearly labels its output format. Keep confidential images off third-party web converters unless you have checked how they handle uploaded data.

Move a phone screenshot to a Windows PC before converting

Transferring and converting are separate operations. Microsoft Photos can import selected photos and videos from an iPhone or Android device and lets you choose where to save them. Microsoft also documents Phone Link for accessing and copying recent Android photos and screenshot-folder files on supported configurations; its guidance specifies Android 7.0 or newer for that route.

  1. Connect the phone, or set up the supported Phone Link connection.
  2. In Windows Photos, choose the phone-import command and select only the screenshot(s) you need.
  3. Choose an import folder and complete the copy.
  4. Open the copied file in Paint or another editor and export it as JPEG using the Windows steps above.

Phone Link and Photos move the original file; neither step by itself proves that the image is JPEG.

Android phones and tablets

Android manufacturers use different gallery applications and menu labels, and the available JPEG export controls are not universal. Check the current Gallery or Photos app for an action explicitly named Export, Save as, or Convert with JPEG/JPG as the output. If no such option appears, transfer the screenshot to Windows, macOS, or another editor that lists JPEG in its format menu. Avoid claiming that every Android device has a built-in JPEG screenshot setting; that behavior is manufacturer- and version-dependent.

Choosing JPEG quality and avoiding blurry text

JPEG is often accepted by upload systems, but screenshots are unusually sensitive to compression because they contain small fonts, one-pixel lines, icons, and flat color areas.

  • Use the highest quality setting that keeps the file within the destination’s size limit.
  • Zoom into small text and thin borders after export. If they look smeared or show block artifacts, export again at higher quality or retain PNG.
  • Flatten transparency deliberately. JPEG has no transparent background; transparent areas may become a solid color chosen by the exporting application.
  • Do not repeatedly open and resave the JPEG. Each lossy save can introduce additional artifacts.
  • For archival screenshots, documentation, or later editing, preserve the original PNG and use JPEG only as a delivery copy.

Batch conversion and privacy decisions

For many screenshots, confirm that your chosen application supports batch export before selecting it. A single-image Save As workflow does not establish that a batch feature exists. If you use a web converter, the images leave your device and are uploaded to a third party. Screenshots can contain account names, internal URLs, personal data, or access tokens, so use an offline editor for confidential material unless the service’s retention and processing terms are acceptable.

Troubleshooting

The file still opens as PNG

You probably renamed the extension or selected a format other than JPEG. Reopen the original in an editor, use its format selector, and save to a new filename. Confirm the file type in Properties rather than relying on the name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

JPEG is missing from the menu

The current application may not support JPEG output, or the menu may be under Export instead of Save as. Try Paint or another editor that lists JPEG/JPG explicitly. Do not infer support from the ability to open JPEG files; reading and writing formats are separate capabilities.

The converted screenshot looks fuzzy

Increase the JPEG quality setting, avoid resizing during export, and inspect the result at 100% zoom. If crisp text is essential, keep or submit the PNG when the destination accepts it.

The file is larger than the PNG

JPEG does not guarantee a smaller file. The source image, quality setting, dimensions, and metadata all affect size. Compare both files and reduce dimensions only when the receiving service permits it without making text unreadable.

The phone workflow has no JPEG option

Apple’s documented screenshot guide does not provide a universal direct JPEG-export procedure, and Android menus vary by manufacturer. Transfer the image to a desktop editor or use a clearly labeled, trusted editor on the phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The upload site rejects the image

Verify that the file is genuinely JPEG, not merely renamed, and check the site’s maximum dimensions, file-size limit, and supported color mode. Export a fresh copy with a simple filename and try again.

If what you need is a JPEG screenshot of a public webpage rather than conversion of a local image, ScreenshotNeo can capture the page through one API request. It is a different workflow from converting a screenshot already stored on your phone or PC: the service creates a new webpage capture and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF.

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters and authentication. The supplied cURL example is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The same request in Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

And in Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account if generating fresh webpage captures fits your workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is JPG different from JPEG?

No. JPG and JPEG identify the same image format; the shorter extension originated from older filename-length limits.

Can I convert a screenshot without installing software?

Possibly, if your device already includes an app with an explicit JPEG export control. Otherwise, use an installed desktop editor. Web converters require uploading the image, which may be unsuitable for confidential screenshots.

Should I submit PNG or JPEG for a screenshot?

Use the format the receiving service requires. PNG usually preserves sharp text and transparency better; JPEG is useful when the service specifically requires it or when a compressed photographic-style image is acceptable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to take the screenshot again?

No. Open the existing image and export a new JPEG copy. Recapturing is unnecessary unless the original file is missing or damaged.
