To convert a PDF page to an image, render that page with a PDF engine. In Python, PyMuPDF uses page.get_pixmap() and pix.save(); Poppler provides the pdftoppm command; Adobe Acrobat offers an export dialog. Choose the page, resolution, color mode, and format for the job—PNG for crisp text and diagrams, JPEG for smaller photographic files, and TIFF or JPEG 2000 for workflows that require them.
Rendering a page versus extracting an embedded picture
A PDF page is a composition of text, vector artwork, and possibly raster images. Rendering draws the complete page into pixels, so the result looks like the page on screen or paper. Extracting recovers image objects that were stored inside the PDF and can omit text, lines, and vector drawings. PyMuPDF’s FAQ puts the distinction plainly: “Vector graphics (line art) cannot be extracted as images directly because they aren’t images in the PDF.” Use rendering when you need a picture of the entire page; use extraction only when you need the original raster assets.
Choose the output settings first
Resolution (DPI)
DPI controls the rendered pixel dimensions. PyMuPDF’s dpi=300 and Poppler’s -r 300 are useful starting points for print or OCR. A lower value is usually adequate for a web preview. Increasing DPI preserves small type and fine lines but increases memory use, pixel dimensions, and file size. Render only the required pages rather than converting an entire long document at 300 DPI.
Recommended Free Tools
Format
- PNG: lossless and usually best for text, screenshots, charts, and line art.
- JPEG: smaller for photographic pages, but lossy compression can create halos around text.
- TIFF: common in archival, scanning, and imaging workflows.
- JPEG 2000: available in Acrobat’s export workflow when that format is required.
Color, transparency, and cropping
Use a colorspace appropriate to the destination (for example, RGB for ordinary screens or grayscale for monochrome OCR). In PyMuPDF, alpha=True preserves transparent empty areas; opaque rendering pre-clears those areas to white. A clip= rectangle renders only a region of the page.

Convert a PDF page to PNG or JPG in Python with PyMuPDF
Install the current PyMuPDF package in the environment where the script will run:
python -m pip install pymupdf
This minimal script converts page 1 (the zero-based index 0) to PNG:
import pymupdf
doc = pymupdf.open("document.pdf")
page = doc[0] # PDF page 1
pix = page.get_pixmap()
pix.save("page.png")
The documented recipe produces page-sized output using the identity matrix. To convert a different page, change the index: doc[2] is page 3. Always close the document when processing many files:

with pymupdf.open("document.pdf") as doc:
page = doc[2] # page 3
pix = page.get_pixmap(dpi=300)
pix.save("page-3.png")
Save one PDF page as JPG
PyMuPDF saves formats supported by the pixmap writer. Use a .jpg filename for JPEG output:
import pymupdf
with pymupdf.open("document.pdf") as doc:
pix = doc[0].get_pixmap(dpi=200, colorspace=pymupdf.csRGB)
pix.save("page-1.jpg", jpg_quality=90)
PNG is generally safer for tiny type and diagrams. JPEG quality is a size-versus-artifact trade-off; inspect the result at 100% before publishing.
Crop or preserve transparency
import pymupdf
with pymupdf.open("document.pdf") as doc:
page = doc[0]
crop = pymupdf.Rect(72, 72, 540, 720) # points: left, top, right, bottom
pix = page.get_pixmap(dpi=300, clip=crop, alpha=True)
pix.save("cropped.png")
PDF coordinates are measured in points (72 points per inch). A crop is useful for a figure or signature, while alpha=True is useful when the image will be composited over another background.

Convert every page
import pymupdf
with pymupdf.open("document.pdf") as doc:
for number, page in enumerate(doc):
pix = page.get_pixmap(dpi=150)
pix.save(f"page-{number + 1}.png")
For a large document, process pages one at a time as above instead of retaining all pixmaps in memory.
Convert a selected page with Poppler’s pdftoppm
Poppler’s pdftoppm reads a PDF and writes bitmap files. To render only page 3 to a 300-DPI PNG:
pdftoppm -f 3 -l 3 -png -r 300 input.pdf page
The output is normally named page-3.png. The important switches are:
-fsets the first page.-lsets the last page.-rsets X and Y resolution.-pngselects PNG in standard Poppler builds.-singlefilewrites one page without the numeric suffix (when used with the appropriate page selection).
Check the installed build, because option availability can vary:
pdftoppm -h
For a page range, change the bounds, for example pdftoppm -f 3 -l 7 -png -r 150 input.pdf page. The utility’s documented default resolution is 150 DPI; specify -r when output size matters.

When Poppler is the better choice
Use it in shell scripts, CI jobs, and batch pipelines where a command and explicit page range are easier to operate than a desktop dialog. Add a separate image conversion step if your build does not provide the output format you need.

Export a PDF page to an image in Adobe Acrobat
Acrobat’s official export workflow supports JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and JPEG 2000. Open the PDF, choose the PDF export or save-to-other-format command, select the image format, choose a destination, and export. Dialog names and placement differ between Acrobat editions, operating systems, and releases, so follow the labels shown by your installed version. If you need one page rather than the whole document, select or extract that page first, then export.
Acrobat is convenient when you need a visual preview of settings and do not want to install Python or command-line tools. It is less convenient for repeatable batch conversion unless you build an action or use a separate automation workflow.
Which method should you use?
| Method | Best for | Page selection | Resolution and color controls | Automation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PyMuPDF | Python applications, crops, per-page logic | Zero-based index, iteration, clip |
dpi, colorspace, alpha, annotations |
Strong |
| pdftoppm | Shell scripts and CI | -f, -l, -singlefile |
-r and format switches |
Strong |
| Adobe Acrobat | Desktop users and occasional exports | Selection or extracted page in the UI | Export dialog options | Limited without additional automation |
For a programmable service, PyMuPDF gives the most direct access to crops and per-page decisions. For a one-off conversion, Acrobat may be fastest. For a reproducible Linux command, Poppler is straightforward.
Performance, quality, and reliability notes
- Estimate output before rendering: a letter-size page at 300 DPI is about 2,550 × 3,300 pixels before any cropping. Higher values can consume substantial memory.
- Render selectively: page ranges and
clipavoid unnecessary work. - Keep the source unchanged: write images to a separate directory and preserve the original PDF for re-rendering at another DPI.
- Validate output: open the image, check the last line of text, thin rules, transparency, and color profile before sending it onward.
- Encrypted or damaged PDFs: a library may require a password or fail while opening. Obtain the owner password where authorized, repair the source, or export through Acrobat.
- Annotations: PyMuPDF exposes an
annotscontrol; decide whether comments and markups belong in the rendered result.
Troubleshooting common conversion problems
The image is blurry or text is unreadable
Increase DPI, such as from 150 to 300, and keep PNG for text-heavy pages. Do not enlarge a low-resolution image after rendering; rerender from the PDF.
The output has a white background instead of transparency
Use alpha=True in PyMuPDF and save as PNG. JPEG cannot preserve transparency.
Only a photograph appears, not the page text
You extracted an embedded image rather than rendering the page. Render the page with get_pixmap() or pdftoppm.

PyMuPDF indexes from zero: doc[0] is page 1 and doc[4] is page 5. Confirm len(doc) and bounds before indexing.
The process is slow or runs out of memory
Lower DPI, render one page at a time, use a crop, and avoid storing pixmaps in a list. Large vector pages can legitimately require more CPU and memory.
Or skip the browser setup
If the source is a public web page or hosted document and you need a fresh rendered capture rather than local PDF processing, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its PDF tools support paper size, margins, landscape mode, and page ranges, while its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Example request (replace the URL and key with your own):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Equivalent Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`${res.status} ${res.statusText}`);
require('fs').writeFileSync('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));
See the parameter details in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

What DPI should I use for OCR?
Start at 300 DPI, then adjust based on character size and the OCR engine. Higher DPI is not automatically more accurate if the source PDF has poor-quality imagery.
Does rendering change the PDF’s text?
No. Rendering creates a separate raster image and leaves the source PDF untouched.
