The right method depends on what you mean by “convert.” To save one picture, chart, shape, or other graphic inside a Word document, use Word’s Save as Picture command and choose PNG. To turn every document page into an image, render the pages through LibreOffice or save the DOC as a PDF and rasterize the PDF. These produce different results: one extracts an embedded object, while the other creates a page image.
PNG is a raster format, so text in the result is no longer selectable or editable. Keep the original DOC (and preferably a PDF) when you need searchable text, accessible content, or future editing.
First decide what you need
| Goal | Best route | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Save one photo, chart, shape, SmartArt object, ink drawing, or text box | Word’s Save as Picture | One PNG containing the selected graphic |
| Create an image of every page | LibreOffice Writer PNG export, or PDF then ImageMagick | One PNG per page, with page layout rendered |
| Create one tall image containing the whole document | Render pages first, then combine them in an image editor or script | A separate composite image; page boundaries must be designed |
Word’s documented Save as Picture feature applies to a selected illustration or other graphic. It is not a whole-document page-export command.

- Open the DOC in Word.
- Click the picture, chart, shape, SmartArt graphic, ink object, or text box you want to extract.
- Right-click the selected object and choose Save as Picture.
- In the file-type selector, choose PNG Portable Network Graphics Format.
- Enter a filename, choose a destination, and select Save.
The PNG contains the selected object, not the surrounding page, headers, footers, or other document text. If the object is grouped, select the group to save it as one image; selecting an individual component saves only that component.
Quality considerations
The saved dimensions depend on the graphic’s available resolution and Word’s export behavior. On Office for Mac, Microsoft notes that Word does not expose all compression and image-quality controls available in dedicated image software. If exact pixel dimensions or resampling control matters, export the page through PDF and use a raster tool instead.
Render every DOC page to PNG with LibreOffice
LibreOffice Writer documents a PNG graphic filter named writer_png_Export. Its graphics-export properties include pixel width, pixel height, page number, transparency, and antialiasing. This gives you more direct control over page-image output than extracting an object in Word.

Graphical workflow
- Open the DOC in LibreOffice Writer and check that the pagination and fonts look correct.
- Open the document’s export command and choose an image export format.
- Select the Writer PNG filter (the exact dialog wording can vary by LibreOffice release).
- Set the page number if the dialog offers page selection, then set pixel width and height or allow the application to calculate them.
- Choose transparency and antialiasing only when they suit the destination. For ordinary page screenshots, an opaque background and antialiasing usually avoid jagged text.
- Export, then inspect the generated PNG and confirm the page count.
Page-image export labels and available controls vary by installed version. If your release does not expose a page PNG command in the interface, use the PDF fallback below.
Command-line conversion (verify your installed release)
LibreOffice’s filter reference documents general soffice --convert-to syntax, DOC input support, and the Writer PNG filter. It does not provide a finished DOC-to-PNG example, so treat the following as a version-dependent recipe and verify the files produced on your system:
mkdir -p png-out
soffice --headless --convert-to png:"writer_png_Export" --outdir png-out input.doc
Some releases may export only one page, create a differently named file, or reject the filter when the input is legacy binary DOC. Check the terminal output and the contents of png-out. If the command fails or produces an unexpected single image, open the DOC in Writer and use the PDF route.

Use PDF as a reliable intermediate
When direct page-image export is unavailable, save the DOC as PDF in Word or another compatible word processor, then rasterize each PDF page. Word’s supported-format documentation includes PDF save and open support for the Word versions covered by that reference.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Step 1: save the DOC as PDF
- Open the DOC and review page breaks, fonts, margins, and missing linked images.
- Choose Word’s File menu, then Save As or Export.
- Select PDF, choose the desired optimization (for example, standard rather than minimum size when print quality matters), and save.
- Open the PDF independently and confirm that it has the expected number of pages.
Step 2: rasterize PDF pages with ImageMagick
ImageMagick reads PDF through Ghostscript. Install both components, then run:
magick -density 200 input.pdf page-%03d.png
The result is numbered page-000.png, page-001.png, and so on (the exact first index can vary by build). A density of 200 DPI is a starting point, not a guarantee of a particular pixel size. Increase it for print-oriented output or reduce it for web thumbnails; watch memory use for large pages.
PDF page boxes can alter the rendered bounds. A PDF with a CropBox, TrimBox, or unusual MediaBox may produce extra margins or a crop different from what you saw in Word. If the PNG edges are wrong, inspect the PDF’s page boxes and render again with settings appropriate to that file.
Render selected pages only
ImageMagick supports page addressing in its input sequence. For example, to render the first three pages, use:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsmagick -density 200 input.pdf[0-2] page-%03d.png
Confirm the syntax on your ImageMagick build before using it in automation; package versions can differ. Rendering the PDF first also protects the original DOC from repeated conversion experiments.

Preserve formatting and choose useful dimensions
Fonts and page breaks
A DOC can reflow when opened on a computer without the original fonts, printer driver, or linked assets. Compare the DOC and the exported PDF before rasterizing. If line wraps, tables, or headers move, install the required fonts or perform the PDF export on a machine where the document is known to render correctly.
Pixel dimensions
PNG has no inherent paper size; its practical size is its pixel width and height. For a page image, keep the aspect ratio of the rendered page. Do not stretch a portrait page to a landscape rectangle. When a publishing system imposes a maximum dimension, resize after rendering with an image tool so text is rasterized once at the final size.
Transparency and backgrounds
Page images normally need a solid white background. Transparency is more useful for an isolated graphic or a document designed to sit over another color. A transparent page can look black or checkerboard in viewers that do not display alpha correctly.
One PNG per page versus one long PNG
Most export workflows create one file per page. A single tall image is a separate composition step: render all pages, create a canvas tall enough for them, and stack them with consistent spacing. Long images can exceed browser or messaging-app limits, so keep the individual page files as well.
Check the conversion before you deliver it
- Count: compare the number of PNG files with the PDF or DOC page count.
- Boundaries: look for clipped footers, missing bleed, unexpected white margins, or rotated pages.
- Readability: zoom into small type, tables, superscripts, and signatures.
- Dimensions: record pixel width and height; do not assume a filename or DPI value tells you the actual size.
- Color: check logos, highlights, and transparency against the background where the PNG will be used.
- Privacy: remove temporary PDFs and PNGs from shared folders when the DOC contains confidential information.
Troubleshooting common failures
The PNG contains only one picture, not the document page
You used Save as Picture. That command exports the selected object. Use LibreOffice page export or the PDF/ImageMagick route for complete pages.
The LibreOffice command says the filter is unknown
The filter name or availability differs in your installed release. Confirm that Writer is installed, try the graphical export dialog, and check the exact filter names reported by that release. The PDF fallback avoids relying on the PNG filter.

The output page is blank
Look for missing fonts, linked images, unsupported fields, or a conversion process that opened the file without updating external content. Open the DOC in Writer or Word, save a fresh PDF, and inspect that PDF before rasterizing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Text is clipped at the edges
Check PDF page boxes and the document’s margins. ImageMagick can honor a page box that is smaller or larger than the visible page. Correct the PDF export or choose the appropriate page-box behavior for your renderer.
Images look blurry
Increase the PDF rasterization density, export at a larger pixel width in LibreOffice, or start from the original embedded graphic rather than a low-resolution preview. Do not repeatedly resize an already resized PNG.
The file is too large
Lower the rendered pixel dimensions, render only the pages you need, or use PNG compression after checking readability. For photographic pages, JPEG may be smaller, but PNG is usually preferable for sharp text, line art, and transparency.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert a DOC to PNG without installing Word?
Yes. LibreOffice can open DOC files and provides a Writer PNG export filter; saving to PDF and rasterizing with ImageMagick is another route. Verify the result because legacy DOC support and filter behavior vary by installed version.
Will hyperlinks remain clickable in a PNG?
No. PNG stores pixels, so links, selectable text, comments, and document structure are not preserved. Keep the DOC or PDF when those functions matter.
Why are there several PNG files after conversion?
Page-rendering workflows normally create one image per page. That is expected and lets each page retain manageable dimensions; combine them only when a single long image is specifically required.
Is PNG better than PDF for archiving a document?
Usually not. PDF or the original DOC preserves text, search, accessibility, and layout metadata. PNG is appropriate when another system specifically requires an image.
