For an outdoor pond, identify the floating plant first, then repeatedly rake, seine, or skim it out while growth is manageable. Remove collected plants away from the water so they cannot wash or blow back. For an aquarium, do not use pond herbicide guidance: the sources available here cover ponds and lakes, not treatment around aquarium livestock, filtration, or water chemistry.

Identify the plant before choosing a control method

Duckweed and watermeal (Wolffia) are small floating plants, but their control recommendations are not automatically interchangeable. Mississippi State Extension identifies duckweed as Lemna spp. and watermeal as Wolffia spp.; duckweed may occur alongside watermeal and mosquitofern (Azolla). Alabama Cooperative Extension also groups these among similar-looking floating aquatic vegetation. If you are unsure what is covering the surface, get an identification before treating it.

For identification and pond-control background, see Alabama Cooperative Extension’s aquatic plant identification and management guide, Texas A&M AgriLife’s duckweed guide, and its watermeal guide.

How to remove duckweed or watermeal from a pond

Rake, seine, or skim small growth early

Physical removal is a practical first step when you can reach the affected area and repeat the work. Texas A&M AgriLife recommends raking or seining duckweed from the surface. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources recommends regular removal as growth appears, using a fine-mesh dip net; a long-handled swimming-pool net can also work. Take the collected plants well away from the pond and dispose of them so wind or runoff cannot return them to the water.

#1 Best Overall
Sepetrel Pool Skimmer Net with Pole, Ultra-Fine Mesh, 72-Inch Total Length
  • Ultra-Fine Nylon Mesh: This pool skimmer net collects small floating debris and fine particles during routine surface cleaning. Choose this fine-mesh version when you need to pick up smaller debris rather than leaves alone.
  • Adjustable 40–72 Inch Total Length: Adjust the assembled net and pole from 40 to 72 inches for close-up skimming or a longer reach. Suitable for routine cleaning of inground and above-ground swimming pools, ponds, spas and hot tubs.
  • Secure Latching Connection: The locking mechanism helps keep the net head attached to the included pole and reduces movement at the connection during use. Check that the latch is fully engaged before skimming.
  • Inclined Scoop Edge: The angled front lip helps guide leaves and loose surface debris into the mesh bag. Use this pool scoop net for regular skimming around pool edges and other accessible areas.
  • Corrugated Aluminum Pole: The thickened aluminum pole features a textured surface for a comfortable grip during pool maintenance. Supplied with a matching net head and pole; the pole uses a non-standard design, so check compatibility before pairing it with other accessories.

Because these plants grow rapidly, one cleanup may not be enough. Check the surface regularly and remove new growth before it spreads into a larger mat. A fine-mesh pond net is useful for gathering small floating plants; no particular brand or model is established as tested.

Use surface-disturbing aeration to help collect growth

Penn State Extension notes that aerators that disturb the water surface can push duckweed and watermeal toward pond edges. That can make the plants easier to collect with a net or seine. Treat aeration as a management aid that concentrates growth for removal, not as proof of eradication.

  • Handle extends from 36 inches to 69 inches
  • Carefully designed shape makes for easy skimming

Consider biological controls only with local guidance

Fish and ducks are not dependable, universal fixes. Texas A&M says tilapia eat duckweed, but they are warm-water fish and legal stocking requirements vary; ducks eat duckweed but seldom control it. Penn State reports that grass carp may provide some duckweed control, but may not eat enough to keep it controlled and may eat submerged vegetation first. Penn State reports no biological control for watermeal. Check local rules and consider the pond’s ecology before introducing animals.

When pond herbicides may be appropriate

Herbicides are a pond-specific, label-controlled option—not a universal recipe. Extension sources discuss different active ingredients and approaches for duckweed and watermeal, but products, formulations, target plants, and permitted uses differ. The appropriate choice depends on correct plant identification, pond dimensions, water uses, local registration, and application conditions. Before treatment, read the current product label and consult local extension staff or a qualified aquatic-plant professional.

Sepetrel Pool Skimmer Net with Pole, Standard Mesh, 72-Inch Total Length
  • Standard Nylon Mesh for Surface Skimming: This pool leaf skimmer collects floating leaves and everyday surface debris. Designed for water-surface cleaning; use a separate deep-bag leaf rake for heavier debris settled on the pool floor.
  • Adjustable 40–72 Inch Total Length: Adjust the assembled net and pole from 40 to 72 inches to suit your cleaning area. Use it for routine skimming in inground and above-ground swimming pools, ponds, spas and hot tubs.
  • Inclined Scoop Edge: The angled front lip helps guide floating leaves and loose debris into the net. This pool scoop design supports regular surface cleanup around pool edges and other accessible areas.
  • Secure Latching Connection: The locking mechanism helps keep the net head attached to the included pole and reduces movement at the connection during use. Check that the latch is fully engaged before skimming.
  • Corrugated Aluminum Pole: The thickened aluminum pole provides a textured gripping surface for everyday pool maintenance. Supplied with a matching net head and pole; the pole uses a non-standard design, so check compatibility before pairing it with other accessories.
  • Confirm that the product label lists the plant and the intended aquatic site.
  • Follow label directions and water-use restrictions, and check applicable local rules.
  • Do not assume a recommendation for one formulation or species applies to another.
  • For a large or difficult infestation, seek site-specific advice rather than guessing at a dose.

A key risk is oxygen depletion: as a large mass of treated plants decays, decomposition can lower dissolved oxygen and harm or kill fish. Some extension guidance discusses staged treatment and aeration as possible ways to manage risk, but aeration does not guarantee safety. Any treatment plan should follow the product label and account for the pond’s conditions.

For additional pond guidance, consult Penn State Extension’s duckweed and watermeal article, Oklahoma State University Extension’s aquatic weed and algae control guidance, and Missouri Department of Conservation’s pond and lake guide. Recommendations and product registrations can vary by location, so use the current label and local advice.

What to do about duckweed or Wolffia in an aquarium

The cited control sources address ponds, lakes, and outdoor aquatic-plant management; they do not establish a safe aquarium treatment procedure or compatibility with livestock, filters, or water chemistry. Do not transfer pond herbicide directions to a stocked aquarium. Get aquarium-specific advice before choosing a treatment method.
